Saloon bar was shut for wine tasting so the public bar was rammed, that meant we had to head elsewhere.

Yeah, odd one, that. Hopefully won't go in the same direction as the other place.

  • A tad nippy this morning, looking forward to reports of temperature readings in Richmond Park, I'm thinking at least -5.

Still a fair few brave souls out but numbers down on last week.

Picked up a couple of roadies in the first bit of the ride, one with a ribcage design on his jacket and the other a guy I have mentioned on here before - facemask, Reads Hotel Mallorca kit, rapid - although in winter he tends to pootle and wasn't in his customary kit this morning. They were most welcome as a distraction from the cold. Ribcage guy jumped a light in Catford which gave him a bit of a gap but I reeled him in and made the pass. Other guy was content to follow a few metres back. Was hoping one of them would pass me so I could get out of the wind for a bit, but obviously my pace was good enough for them, so that's fairly pleasing. Was quite spinny but just about manageable.

Reads guy carried on up to New Cross and OKR, I turned off for Deptford. Felt a presence along Brookmill Rd, when I shoulder checked to go round a car saw that ribcage guy was right on my wheel. He turned left with me for the High St and went past me as I started the transition to Q1 pootle mode. Poor tactics on my part really as he then went straight on to go the Evelyn St way, so at some point would have noticed I wasn't there and no doubt assumed he'd dropped me and my early pace was all for show, with nothing to back it up. Which wouldn't have been too far from the truth...
  • Nice ride in, kit location panic at home but I survived without a buff and found an alternative to my gillet. Rode in with condor/bike saddle back guy, really nice chat but no idea of his name.

Else, am stiff and knackered from 35k back from Forest Gate yesterday on my new Christiania bike purchased off some crack addict living in a slum. For about 3 grams of meth its a good deal, I need a missing mudguard, build/purchase a kids bench seat, service the nexus 7 speed and true a wheel. Sadly after 12 calls to the seller and enough waiting about I'd not enough juice to strava my ride.
If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

Absolutely sod of a ride today. No idea what tipped it - it wasn't a head wind according to windytv/wunderground, but slow as hell, and by the time I got to work garmin told me my recovery time was 28 hours...

It definitely felt like it was that hard! I've not updated it to strava/garmin yet, so can't review the actual heartrate.

Same feeling on the way in today, which hurt cos I was working like a dog playing leapfrog with someone on skinny tyres while i was cooking bacon with the spiked tyres on..

I think the brakes are rubbing slightly.

Chilly one this morning, was allegedly -2 degrees when I left home (temp courtesy of my iPhone). Must have been at least a couple of degrees lower than that in RP. Colder temps = fewer cyclists = much more pleasant riding in with a vastly reduced chance of a chopper wiping out my front wheel

According to Sheldon's calculator, 44-16 with my tyres, cranks etc should be good for 19.4 mph at 90 rpm, and 25.9 mph at 120 rpm which is plenty really. TBH, at the moment I have little conception of my speed and cadence - I know from when I had a Garmin that 90 rpm is my usual road cadence but of course, that was having the ability to change gear, and therefore running the correct gear at all times. It's weird being stuck with one gear, messes with my sense of what is 'normal'.
44x16 is the highest gearing permitted for U12 riders under BC regulations. In 2017 I watched a bunch of 9-10 year old boys and 10-11 year old girls racing under Dutch regulations (which limit gearing to 42x16) complete a ~10 mile road race at an average speed of about 29mph.
    Pannier, 120rpm.

I had a particularly early start today and left the house at 5:30 - it was -2 at home (Surbiton) and my Garmin claims it dropped to -4 in the Park at about 05:50. The average was -2 and never above 0C, even in the middle of London. At least the roads were largely dry and no real evidence of it being slippy. Unlike yesterday's club run when someone binned it on the big "roundabout" where the road from Windsor Great Park joins the A308 - no obvious ice - but the surface was slippier than a slippery thing. Most of us went round it like a threepenny bit with lots of little slides but one just washed out completely. A reminder that the roads can be tricky at this time of year!

The Canbury Arms, quite looking forward to it being re-opened. Good to have more choice and other pubs in the chain seem quite good. Also it might thin out some of the "new demographic" in the Wych, leaving more space for us grumpy old men. We ended up in the Norb which is very different but I quite like it, even when the lad isn't working in there.
Chilly ride in this morning but I managed to have a coffee on the way. No competition heading my way really, saw one bloke on an old road bike with a child seat on the back riding in shorts. Made me feel cold just looking at him.

Don't underestimate the extra effort of the spiked tyres, I've not fitted the Gravdals this side of Xmas, but I do recall them being really hard work when we had a nippy spell near freezing back in October/November in Southampton.

Debating whether to fit the Gravdals for tomorrow, just in case, I suspect they will be a wise decision for Weds-Fri inclusive.

Richmond Park, Putney Bridge, New Kings' Road, then Embankment all the way to Blackfriar's Bridge. Final bit depends exactly where you're heading. The ramp off Blackfriar's Bridge takes you up to Farringdon St, but for some destinations (eg mine) it works better to go straight North to Fleet St via (eg) Temple Ave, Bouverie St. This is because it takes about 47 phases of the lights to complete a right turn at Ludgate Circus; straight on or left are fine.

Yeah, Canbury Arms will hopefully be decent. It was ok when we first moved to our current house but went a bit wacky 2 or so years ago. The new owners are certainly spending a lot of money on it so it will be interesting to see the outcome.

Fair to say own business was not minded and I may have gone a bit over the top with my response. :x At least he kept quiet for the rest of the ride.

Norbiton's pizzas are very good, and it has Hells on tap which is all good. Mrs KG rates the Albion - I can't give a first hand review yet.

Oh joy, just finished a turbo session to discover we now have ice warnings for tomorrow, got to now go fumbling in the garage to grab the commuter wheels and the Gravdals ready for the morning.

Albion is quite good, but a little characterless compared to the Antelope or Sussex. Only been a couple of times though. Lots of beer choices of course. Norbiton does have good pizzas, been there rather more often since the lad started working there in the holidays. Any excuse.

I went to the Norbiton a couple of weeks ago. I can get there on the 57 bus, or 131, I can't remember which. Very kid friendly, pizzas are great. Liked it. I missed mini (but not so mini) V68 by an hour or two.

Nice ride home. A bit of SCR with a guy I've not seen before on a spesh single speed with bull horns. Motspur park bound. Amusing pair of motorbikeists indulging in handbags through tooting.
