Silly commuting racing

Going up the inside left of any vehicle is hazardous at the best of times and chronically stupid when they are indicating. I agree with Rower on calling it out because sometimes people really don't think about their actions. Naturally the best solution is to design out human stupidity (e.g. the segregation on the embankment) but change is coming far too slowly to cope with the volume of demand and there's a huge lack of political leadership.0

Yep, sadly you see it all too often, then again there are moments when there are a long stream of cyclists passing the inside with a fair amount of space from a CS or a second lane and I keep going with them on the basis the driver would be mad to make the turn...
The guy I once told that I didn't need see him die as it would ruin my day, him having just cheated death between a Bus and Tipper Truck just looked at me gormlessly like he's never consider there to be any danger in the slightest.
PT today, the lighter side of grim but happily listening to Bill Browder on the Trumpcast, makes us realise our lives/worries about the world are pretty small fry!If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.0 -

Quite often there's plenty of space on the right if you look far enough ahead and anticipate what's going to happen...Pannier, 120rpm.0 -

Feeling a bit sore today?
He was very apologetic tbf.
Took a trip to the walk-in because my wrist was aching, the nurse told me that these things hurt more as we get older and that I'd probably be ok
More importantly, the bike was ok, handle bar was bent a bit but nothing serious. I was thrown over the handlebars when I grabbed the anchors so I landed on him rather than colliding with the front wheel. I've been having problems with tendonitis so I put a flat-bar on a road-bike last year and this incident highlighted that the balance is a mess now0 -
First day back on the bike in almost a month. Stamina has absolutely gone - though thankfully didn't get passed.0

I don't even bother calling out people again. I have been told to "Fuck off" or "Fucking Your business" one too many times0

This is God punishing you for switching to a flat bar

Nearly got wiped out by an old lady on a tricycle at one point, similar to analogueboy's incident in that she appeared from behind a van that was in stationary traffic in the opposite lane. The good thing is she was rather slower moving so I had time to take avoiding action. That was about as close as it got to competition on my route.
I think it was the night for SCR wives to go to the pub last night, at least two of them where I was. We really should get out, can't let them have all the fun.0 -
Well that was wet....and the rain was pretty cold.
Conditions meant my entire commute was neutralised.
10 points to the pedestrian at Mornington Crescent this morning who locks eyes on me before he starts crossing, but then starts crossing from right to left whilst looking right at me and finally stops right in my path. Just complete zombie.0 -
Yep, snow started for all of about 45 seconds as I approached DT. Kit selection worked to an extant but my sportful no rain bibs should be marketed as bit of rain and not really for snow bibs.
Chapeaux to the guy on the focus with a rear guard, Power Meter and slammed stem, you sir, know your kit.

Wahoo reading zero degrees. Heavy sleet/rain for the first 15 mins of the commute. Not inconsiderable cross headwind. Heavy traffic because everyone jumped in their car. Yuck. At least it stopped raining/sleeting after a while.
More proof, if required, that the Lusso winter jacket I have is brilliant, as my top half was warm and dry on arrival.
Also very pleased that I could be @rsed to GT85, wipe down and re-lube my chain with wet lube after yesterday's very wet road commute home.0 -
Not much activity here today. Rode home all the way from Southwark with the allegedly elusive abfg. Good chat on subjects from cycling kit, my mismatched wheels, cyling holidays, new cargo bikes and the vagaries of the sw london housing market and childcare.
I was forced to show some sod that overtook me that that sort of behaviour really isn't on.
Strava tells me that dekant takes the right at Clapham South sometimes, and ends up in the Wimbledon area. Maybe our paths will cross someday..0 -
An absolute biscuit of a rider this morning. White Boardman, facemask. Dude, not cool to cut round a queue of waiting cyclists and then try to muscle your way in and get a little too close to one rider in particular.
This evening was much nicer. For a start, it was dry. Picked up a few riders along Millbank and Chelsea Embankment.FCN 2-4.

The kids were adamant that it was snowing yesterday morning, despite me telling them that they were clearly delusional and needed to get to sleep earlier.

Lovely crisp morning. PB on the oval to elephant drag strip, on the hoods, looking like I wasn't trying, just to show some chancer that he wasn't really very fast (not that I'm under any delusions that I am actually fast - I just overtake nodders in between breathers at traffic lights on CS7 ), and that as soon as traffic allowed, there was no way he could ride 6 inches off my wheel. Shame traffic was backed up a bit at the elephant end for a red light, otherwise it would have been even better...0

Top social ride last night with Hopkins last night and a solid demonstration that Orange is the new pink, Sunday will tell if I've agreed to buy a lemon of a cargo bike, the required 20 mile ride home on it will soon prove that.
I put a good effort into the ascent of Southwark Bridge this morning proving I can still sprint, so my shortcomings of pace on the bike is clearly that hard sustained effort. Must try harder or get back on the Turbo.
Else, lovely chat with the bearded guy on a condor fixie (sometimes Cervelo) and worked out our jobs are loosely related. I doub't he's on here though. If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.0 -

Cold but not unpleasant this morning, plenty of other commuters on Q1 still. Not really an SCR route which is good because I'm definitely slightly undergeared at 44-16, certainly on the way in. That said, I won't be changing anything because I need to see how it goes with that gear in a range of conditions - I will almost certainly see it differently after my first commute home into a strong headwind.
According to Sheldon's calculator, 44-16 with my tyres, cranks etc should be good for 19.4 mph at 90 rpm, and 25.9 mph at 120 rpm which is plenty really. TBH, at the moment I have little conception of my speed and cadence - I know from when I had a Garmin that 90 rpm is my usual road cadence but of course, that was having the ability to change gear, and therefore running the correct gear at all times. It's weird being stuck with one gear, messes with my sense of what is 'normal'.
So I may have to temporarily end my retirement from Strava and get some data to establish a few internal benchmarks. Or I could do it the old fashioned way and take to the main road, there to engage in regular SCR until I gain understanding and acceptance of my capabilities with this gear.
I can get up Bromley Hill ok which was my main concern going SS (don't even need to get out of the saddle) so I'm confident that a bigger gear will be fine come summer, as long as I shed some timber in the meantime...0 -
WFH today, but last night's commute was a bitch.
Got pretty soaked and just had nothing in the legs so was very much a miserable bimble back. That being said, i didn't seem to get passed much, apart from when I was going really slow no matter how hard i was turning the pedals. Turns out my rear wheel had become misaligned in the dropouts and was rubbing against the stay...Sorted that out and was back on my way!0 -

Thankfully I turned off the A24 at Clapham south with ABFG last night, so I was only on it between Clapham Common and Clapham South. Was it me/us on that short stretch? Or are you referring to points South?0 -

That was a chilly ride in, stopped for a coffee at my mates coffee shop and he hadn't got there to open up yet. Very few people out on bikes heading out this way, was quite a pleasant ride in as I'd got the clothing about right. Overshoes would have been a good idea though.cjcp wrote:Yep, Mrs CJ said she bumped into you. I immediately wondered whether something had happened to your usual haunt! Absolutely sod of a ride today. No idea what tipped it - it wasn't a head wind according to windytv/wunderground, but slow as hell, and by the time I got to work garmin told me my recovery time was 28 hours...
It definitely felt like it was that hard! I've not updated it to strava/garmin yet, so can't review the actual heartrate.Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.
