The few cyclists that were out all seemed to be trying to glue themselves to my back wheel. No problem, thought I, I'll just put the hammer down across the park and down Priory Lane, and then have a breather when I get to LRR. Of course LRR was deserted, so I had to keep going until I got to Putney Bridge. At which I hit a clear run of green lights. No problem though, NKR is *never* clear enough to give it full beans. Except, of course, it was.

I was quite puffed by the time I got to work...

    And what a use.

Just finished Escape to Victory. Did Ossie ever have a better game? (Aside from giving away the penalty at the death.)

even though i wasn't working last week i decided to join my mate who lives around the corner from me and works in the same office as me on the 'commute' last week, Thursday and Friday. Thursday was deffo the quieter day although it was f.f.f.f.freezing cold especially when I headed west into a foggy RP for half a lap on an extended ride home. Friday was busier with traffic but milder and i did another extended ride home.

Last commute of the year today and the roads and my office are like wastelands. Lovely.

A-Merckx to that. If only it were like that every day...

Out the house at half six this morning for the commute, and it was like having the roads to oneself. No riders to speak of. Very few cars. No wind. Little sound.

Knew I'd had a good ride by ones own (bang average) standards when I got to work and seen that I'd gotten my first sub one hour commute from Morden to Canary Wharf via Greenwich. Closer inspection of Strava told me I'd taken a cup (never had a cup before!) for the third best overall time for the Oval to Greenwich foot tunnel segment. 17m 23s over 8.2km. Only 25 seconds off the top spot. Still, very happy with the final effort of 2018 even if it was akin to a solo TT effort.

All the best for 2019 SCR folk. Stay safe and lucky.

Happy New Year to all you Silly Commuter Racers!

Quiet roads this morning, but north easterly wind, plus 2kg of extra weight owing to mince pies and turkey, along with dramatically lower fitness levels due to lack of exercise made for slow progress....

Yeah, this was the normally heaving Clapham common, just me and my mate Graham behind me and another commuting buddy 'Fixie' Mike ahead and this was London Bridge

Empty roads. A thing of great beauty and wonder.

The empty roads were great..............until I got to Blackfriars and the back tyre went pop. I knew the tyre needed replacing and really should have done it over the Crimbo break but didn't get around to it. Sealant wouldn't fix it (running tubeless, obv), nor would a worm, so ended up having to pop an inner tube in. Great start to the New Year.............

Savouring the mostly empty roads too. Though I did see a record number of other cyclists (2) going up Kingston Hill. Got a cheery hello from one which I returned. Legs wernt too bad, lets see if that lasts until this evening.

Did see that the road to Robin Hood gate/roundabout in RP is going to be shut again for two weeks from the 14th Jan for more resurfacing works.
  • Quiet but not that quiet? Hopefully a quiet few days.

Legs felt better than expected given the sedentary lifestyle but a definite paunch hanging over the top of the bib shorts. My new waterproof from santa is sufficiently snug enough to encourage me to get it back under control...

Left for work 2 hours earlier than normal ( but aligned with the new years resolution).
Busier than I expected/last travelling at that time of day, but absolute bliss compared to "normal".

Guess the increase was other people trying to fulfil their new years resolutions too..
Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.

Wasn't expecting it to be as quiet as it was this morning. Only bit of mild SCR I had was with the guy with triantelope bars and a saddle that's way too low - it would seem he enjoyed the Christmas break though because he was much slower this morning than at the end of last year.

Pretty quiet on the way home but was passed by about a dozen cyclists as I faffed with my bag straps at the gate to RP.
Ended up behind some guy with a bright red speedometer in place of a rear light most of the way back. Despite turning off a couple of times, he kept appearing back in front of me.

I think I've seen him before - or someone else with the same speedo. He said it was to highlight to cars when he is doing 20 in a 20... good idea I thought

Quiet roads, lack of the wet stuff and pretty minimal wind have made for a lovely week :D Maybe the resolutionistas won't come this year

Yeah, loving the bone dry roads.

Only one more ride home and then off to Hawaii tomorrow for a week. Can't say I'll miss cold fingers and toes.

Very slow ride in to work this morning, thankfully no other cyclists going my way. Was a little overdressed and had plenty of time so I bimbled in. Stopped for a coffee at a mate's coffee shop and then bumped into a colleague walking in so had a bit of a catch up and a moan for a stretch. Also loving the dry roads at the moment, not enjoying being at work so much. Hawaii sounds like a very good idea.

I haven't gotten into a impromptu race while commuting for a very long time. About 35 years ago I was commuting in jeans and tennis shoes and some local racing jock (known to be a jackass in the cycling community because he thought he was God's gift to bike racing) with all the racing clothes and expensive bike passed me, which normally I would not even blink an eye over it except the jackass said as he passed: "Look out here I come", and for some reason that made me mad, so I immediately started to crank hard to catch the guy and I drafted him for about a couple of miles, he noticed me doing this the whole time and tried to outrun me but failed as I stayed on his rear wheel cheating the wind, so I finally decided to pass him and said to him: "look out HERE I come!" As I passed him I kept going to the left to prevent him from drafting me, when I looked back about another mile later he was about a block behind me, two miles later he was even further back. That was the only time I ever had a race while commuting.

The funny thing was this was on a bike path, the distance from the start of our little race to where I had to stop for a stop sign due to the path crossing a road, I stopped and waited for him, he never said a word to me just looked straight ahead like I wasn't there, I said "hi" to him while trying to keep from laughing. I was racing on a different team then that guy during that time as well so I had the speed and endurance to pull of what I did.

Cat 6 wacky races out there this morning. The full list were out...choppers, nodders, allezmen. Was hoping for a quiet end to the week but not to be!
  • My lethargy had obviously angered the traffic light gods so a bit stop start this morning. A good sample of faster allezmen and promuters but I just don't seem to have any speed.

As for kit, I think my jersey & arm warmers under a thin waterproof would have been better switch out for a proper merino base layer, I went through moments of too hot, bloody freezing and thinking i'd goldilocksed the whole thing.

Someone said hello to me on Priory Lane this morning as I passed him, but I didn't see who it was. Any of you lot?

Very quiet for cars and cyclists on my route this morning but there were a bunch of fallow deer having a great time in RP crossing the road in single file at 3 second intervals while the traffic backed up sawyers hill. Bloody ruminants, don't even pay road tax...

You'd think they'd learn that parks are for driving through at high speed on your way to work, not ambling about enjoying yourself like some kind of hippy.
  • That made last week feel very quiet. Judging by the amount of cyclists sitting in the wrong place at junctions, a lot of new years resolutionists out there.

Well, we've only had a little bit of Wet since last summer, and not much Cold. So it's possible some are still hanging on from Noddergeddon 2018.

Snow is forcast for the end of the month, but if it doesn't happen then this could be a record breaking year for commuting by bike. 7C and Dry is pretty much perfect commuting weather and I could see plenty of resolutionists hanging on until spring.
  • Lots of choppers around this morning.
Also, seasons greetings from the Royal Borough of Kensignton and Chelsea:

It's definitely back to work day today! Even had to wait for a shower, which I don't think I've had to do since last January :P
