Traffic/number of cyclists didn't seem any better or worse than before Christmas to me.

I seemed worse, after 2 weeks off with only a quick spin round RP to keep the legs ticking over. Then I got to work and realised I'd forgotten the keys to my locks, so had to go to Evans and buy a new lock. Oh for the secure underground bike parking I had at my last employer.

Other than opening another box of Quality Street, that was the first exercise I've done since 16th December.
    Mud - Genesis Vapour CCX
    Race - Fuji Norcom Straight
    Sun - Cervelo R3
Winter / Commute - Dolan ADX
  • Saw the other Hopkins who was enjoying the tail wind and a shiny new Propel.
If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

Flyby says you were near me for about 20 minutes this morning, maybe I'm one of them.... I got annoyed by a car overtaking me going up Dark Hill when there was one coming the other way, so my stupid brain was determined to overtake back. I'm such an idiot.

I think it's actually an attempt at creating The Cycling Grand National and this is Beeches Brook.

Christmas trees don't require lighter fluid. Go up in a matter of seconds as-is.

  • Bit of a dull morning and slightly hungover after yet more drinks last night, so a sluggish ride in. Saw a rider who I think is a guy who has very occasionally posted on here in the past - username is Supernicebig, think his real name is Graham. Picked him up somewhere north of Downham, he seemed to be in pootle mode. I didn't try to overtake as I was quite happy to pootle myself, and if it is the guy I'm thinking of, he used to be quite hard to keep up with on a MTB with full nobblies. Lights kept going green as we got to them so never got to say hello, I branched off at Lewisham for deptford and he went OKR way up Loampit. If that was you (and you see this) - hello!

Correct, was me! Still commuting 5 days a week, most of the time on Cross bike, and randomly on 29' MTB just to wind the Roadies' up!!! say hello next time!

You mean proving the overtake was completely futile by passing them again, turning into some sort of maniac in your attempts to do so? No, I've never done that either
Still very quiet out in the wilds of my commute. I think I passed one person going in my direction as I turned off the Hampton Court Road, that was it.

Looks like you managed to stay a bit ahead of it all.
Will look out for you in future seeing as we have pretty much the same route in.

Oddly coming home this morning, was a surprising amount of other cyclists north of Hounslow Heath, even a few on the Heath, and fair bit in Bushy Park. Which generally is my busiest area, oddly enough, mainly due to the staggering undue of the parkway cyclepaths.

I flewby ABFG in Raynes Park this evening. I somehow knew it was him even though he was 200 metres ahead of me as i dropped down Pepys Road hill he crossed Worple road ahead of me but then went straight on as I headed under the train bridge and out to Grand Drive

  • I'd have never have spotted you coming out of that side road... I guess me scoring 2/5 for kit variety and 5/5 for unique luggage makes me an easy spot in some sort of SCR top trumps.

Good to know you're back out there after the breaks and bumps of last year.

I'd assumed that your kit had fused to your skin, so little do you vary it. :D

Felt like an unusual wind direction this morning.

Thanks. Yeah, 2018 almost broke me (both work and cycling) but I'm aiming to get back on it for '19

I have jinxed the weather by declaring it so dry, it was a day for the summer bike. It'll probably rain on the way home, blame me!

I varied my kit too by ditching the tights and jacket and going for summer shorts and jersey albeit with leg/arm warmers, long fingers and a gilet. Sadly I don't seem to have been any quicker than normal not picking up a single cup, though it felt fast.

I was also hugely underwhelmed. All the protection is concentrated on the tummy and back. Whenever I've come off, it's the hips that get first and hard, then maybe the shoulders. Even in the demo he seems to be deliberately having to roll onto his back.

Well, in the demo he takes the first impact on his knee. Maybe he should just wear knee pads.

Might be useful for those 'forgot to unclip moments', although really it should also hide your face for those due to embarrassment

I wonder how breathable that is.... Imagine how much the dft will waste funding that idea... And then getting the highway code updated to add that to stuff we should wear on a bike...
Can't wait for the first bit of victim blaming for someone not wearing that after they've been driven into by someone on a phone....

So it doesn't protect your head, shoulders, arms or legs. I assume it also won't help if you get run over by a lorry.

I think it may have been funded by people who have never fallen off a bike.

No worries sir! Simply combine it with the Hövding inflatable helmet for all your inflation needs!*

When I scrolled down that page to the heading 'PERSONALIZISE YOUR HÖVDING' - I thought for a moment they were selling other types of inflatable safety wear too.

  • I guess that shows the price of safety. £249 every time you come off, I assume regardless of whether your head hits anything.

How often do you come off? Car airbags are way more expensive (I gather your car is likely to be an insurance write-off if the airbags are activated, even if it's otherwise undamaged) but I haven't heard any complaints about the cost of those.

There are a gazillion other reasons I wouldn't tough one of these with a bargepole, but (for road riding) I don't think the cost is prohibitive. If you buy decent regular helmets and replace them every 5 years, as most seem to recommend, it's not going to take long to rack up £250.

Off-road's a different ballgame obviously, but i don't think these are targetted at riders who expect to crash multiple times in one ride.

Maybe about once every 18 months? Last one was on ice last year where I hit the ground elbow first and rolled onto my back. Did not replace my helmet. Previous one my head hit the floor, so I replaced the helmet.

A car airbag doesn't deploy every time you have a scrape.
