  • haha nice one dazz!
tesco have dropped theirs down to £2 each now, seems was a bit of a mis print lol!
need to pop to trago's soon as running out of puncture patches!! will most likely go falmouth though, will see what they have! (watersports centre next to trago does nice coffee and Ansome bacon sarnies!!!)

matt, sounds good! Love new bike bits!!!!! although a new telly is always nice too!! have to admit, since killing the carbon one i've stopped looking for Bling!
going to pop down and have a natter with the guys on monday about frames etc. as seen a lapierre one that looks half decent But, isnt normally a frame only deal by the looks of it! so will pick their brains!!!

Chest really started hurting on friday, think its muscle damage from my incident with the tree, but if is still as painful on monday i shall go the doc's and check its not ribs!!! so no riding for me tomorow as realy does hurt lol!

Missprint my arse more than likely they noticed they were shifting so bumped the price only to have no bugger buy them so dropped it back to a more reasonable price.

Seen this practice done a ton of times when they notice it's popular.

Bugger all tubes in fowlmouth btw already tried. ;)

Then again you may get lucky and catch them when they've stocked up.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

  • haha! yeah think you could be on it with that matey! quite often prices Shoot up for no reason then Drop back down to below what they were for a while and then back up to the original, make more sense to leave it as it was hahahah!

trouble with trago's is that if tyou see anything you have to buy enough there and then as there's no garantee it'll be there next time you visit!
some friends got unstuck with that on kitchen tiles! bought enough but inevitably ran out went back and none left!! result = 90% finished kitchen!!!

Got Loads of repaired and tested tubes to use anyways! just like bunging in a new one! ahahha!

  • been to the docs today about my right handside chest pain!! Doc thinks its quite likely fractured/broken rib or two from my crash into the tree!
got an X-ray booked tomorow morning so will see from that! But got some great strong painkillers now too!!
hoping its not as that could keep me of the bike for a smidge!

Timmo - ouch! Proper injury! I've cracked ribs before - it's fine as long as you don't:

    Breathe
    Laugh
    Cough
    Sneeze
    Breathe.

Freezing but nice ride this morning and a lovely barrelly surf just now :D
  • haha! yeah summed it up there matt!
not to mention the feeling when it doesnt hurt for a bit and you forget! Then try and do somehting normal and BOOM the pains instantly back hahahah!

had to get in behind the tv table this morning to sort the areal cable out and sniffed up a lung full of dust (even thoguh it was all moved and swept last night!!) so had a tickly chesty cough all morning lol! that helped a lot hahah! and always sneeze twice a morning! have done for Donkeys years! knowing your going to sneeze and trying to pre empt it really doesnt help either hahah! even tried it with my hands over the saw biot as if my sneeze is going to blow my innerds out! which it didnt lol! hahah!

i have come to the conclusion though that, Trees with trunks thicker than your thighs Are not the best ones to crash into! 8) :D

will find out tomorow whats what!! got the car thursday as were off up to Wells for the carnival (bridgewater circuirt) and to see mum, so going to go and talk frames down the barn! unless i can drop a hint to pops about on on ebay that ends soon lol! - me thinks it wont work lol! so down the barn it will be hahah!

did however look at an On one 456! thinking along the recomendations you posted up the top of this page!!
suprisingly good value actually! and very tempting, although will be slightly heavier when built up as frames a pound more than the old carbon one but could be a good option?? (just the tubes look too thin lol!!)

On one 456 has a great reputation and would last 252352565 years without any issues.

Trees with trunks thicker than your thighs? In my case, that means a young sapling

My sister lives in Wells - lovely part of the World. We also do PR for Somerset - so have done lots on the Carnivals!
  • yeah your right about it lasting!
trouble is i think i need to work out what i want frm the bike! the on one would build a nice middle 20's lb age xc bikewhich is pretty much suited for me, i think! BUT! ive also seen a lapierre frame that looks promising and there's a very light tasty merida on ebay at the mo! now that would build into a low 20's whippet bike! m- unrealistic for me to get though so almost out the question! offered brother the chance to buy it for me for Christmas and birthdays for the next 10 years but he declined! lol! funnily enough!

the on one makes a lot of sense though! hmmmmmn!

i have also sent some pics of the bit i broke of to a local engineering place to see if there is anything they can do! So as the law of sod dictates, i'll set my mind on a frame save up get it and hten receive an email from them saying Yes we can do that for 50p lol!
then ofcourse, there's the whole sizing issue! do i go for an 18" or a 20"!??! my old carbon frame was a 20" and was fine, an 18" frame would be 30mm shorter on the top tube, but that could be easily changeable with a layback post and longer stem! (i run an 80mm at the mo but have a 100 and 110 in the shed)
    all these descisions!!!
or in my case, So few descisions, So much time! (think thats the worse way around as you over think it too much!!!)

Weve done the carnival a few times up at mums and is always a good weekend, carnival is really somehting to see! this year we have indoor viewing too as Mum's husbands brother has a house in the town on the carnival route! = warm, dry, galsses for the drinks 8) 8)

Just take your time and do your homework, the tomac was bought in a moment of madness with my current choice taking an age, what won it was the fact giants very rarely break which of course is that last thing anyone wants.

Right then all ghillied up, camelbak all ready, just a question of will one baselayer and a jersey be enough hmm...

Have to make the most of tonight's weather don't we. ;)

I wore a long sleeve baselayer (merino), jacket (Altura Reflex), full lehgth gloves, thick non cycle socks and 3/4 length shorts and was just about warm enough this morning in around 1-2 degrees.

Mind you don't set fire to anything with that light!
  • haha! yeah if you get a bit chilly just hop off and stand infront your light for a minute! not only will you be toasty warm but also moderately tanned at the same time!:wink::wink:

I might have me some broiled bunny if they run head on into the light like last time.

Funny enough im wearing a long sleeve bamboo baselayer and i've thrown in my lid liner and winter gloves into the camelbak just in case.

Oh haha you know i did wonder if the light would make my glasses tint whilst riding, oh crap best go gotta catch ricci before he shuts, laters!!!!

Brrrrr! It's far too cold and wet at the moment! I'm not prepared for this winter riding business at all...no lights, no base layer, no waterproof jacket :(

Anyone going on the bodmin moor ride on Saturday?
    Whyte 905
  • back from x-ray! lady didnt hint at anything so have to wait for a week or so for the results to get to the doc's!!!
pain killers are good though! hardly notice it until i over reach/stretch or sneeze! sadly, the rest of me's creaking lol!

beeen looking more at frames again and specifically the on one (Damn you Matt!!),
i'm in two minds at the mo, alot of the feedback from the peeps that have them is Good if not great! supposed to be a Very compliant ride and great with a 120-140mm fork,
the trouble is i only have 100mm forks, (going to have a search and see what taller forks go for on ebay dreckly) and i dont know what the difference will be like from the carbon to a steel frame?? i loved the stiffness of the carbon and the lightweight chuckableness of it, and the direct feel it gave you, and i'm struggling with what the on one wi be like in comparison (will post up a thread on here in general dreckly and on STW), dont want to commit to something i'm not going to be 100% on! when a carbon replacement frame is still £200, attainable by feb maybe, its dfficult as there's only the £70 difference! would be a lot easier if one is 135 like the on one and the other 400! that and there's a lapierre frame on ebay for 150 delivered, (the merida one has been with drawn which was a bummer as was ging to nobble pops this evening on the phone about that lol)

trouble is i dont want to rush the descision but also dont want to wait too long over it and loose the biking mojo!!

wifey suggested a ti frame untill we looked at prices hahahah!
anyways, looks like a day of more frame research!!!!

Timmo - ti is ideal but as you say very pricey.

The frame should still feel pretty stiff but has a tiny bit if vertical flex in the rear triangle - just takes the buzz out of high frequeny bumps. I like that feel myself.

I don't think you need more than 100mm of travel - but do check that frame goes with 100mm okay (not sure myself).

The clincher for me is that it will last and last - there is almost no chance of breaking it and the frame gets nothing but rave reviews.

A tricky one - the others sound good too but while a steel frame is easy to repair and won't fatigue, an alu or used carbon frame is an unknown quantity - any damage could lead to total failure. Possibility if you're sub 10 stone. I believe you may be a wee bit over that?
  • haha! yeah just a teeny bit over that lmao! infact, just a bit over 10st +1/2 again lol!

i think your right though, its the Makes sence option!
from what ive found out through the thread it would be the on one inbred for the 100mm forks!

Timmo - does sound like a good idea. Hadn't realised the 456 needed a longer travel fork - oops!

Some good advise on your thread but I'd seriously look at chasing just lightweight (unless it's really heavy!) over durability. You have light components so should be able to build a mid 20lbs bike that last years.
  • no worries matt, i only found out it was suited to a long fork through researching it from your pointer!!
even more stumped now as a mention of a Handsome dogg talisman frame has popped up Which is currently at £60 in allterraincycles!

i think a mid 20's ish steel frame could be spot on??

Timmo - ideal! My old (1997) Stumpy is steel and weighs around 24-25lbs but is very stripped down and minimalist - rigid fork, V brakes, weight shaved where possible, etc. Still huge fun to ride.

Surf was EPIC at PT just now. My surfboard tailpad got ripped off - that was how powerful it was!!
  • Sounds Awsome matt! know its been good for the last couple of weeks, good mate of mine smashed his collar bone landing a big air on his BB last week just as the surf rolled in! Gutted! he one good 2 hour session in though!

goignt o drop All terrain cycles an email in a mo and ask about geometry etc. as for £60 for the frame if its a goer could be ideal!
(although back of my mind is still saying Buy another carbon one! Changing my mind more often than Dazz puts fuel in the Scoob!:wink::wink: )

Was a link to a thread on mtbr dazz posted int he thread i started for info on frames that was about the carbon ones like mine, i was expecting it to be a slating thread but turned out almost the opposite!!

am half tempted to go for the steel one and also look for a carbon one, Build the steel up as a mid 20's all day bike and build the carbon one up as a Silly light whippet bike! (would take some time though!! be a bit of a project!!) although see, going get some cakes or doghnuts and go and natter to the guys down the barn toorow about the lapierre frame ive seen too! like i said before, It owuld be simple if they were £400+ a frame as that would instantly rule them out lol! but having quite a lot of options in the £200 bracket makes it too tricky lol!

unfortunately though, the pain killers the doc's given me which work Very well But, they hjave sapped all my energy meaning no riding for me at all! cis a real struggle to walk to the shop at the end of tyhe road!! dont want to get stuck half way around a loop not able to get home!! :?

  • Potentially some exciting news on the horizon. Don't know if you know about 1SW, but they are a project looking to develop off road sites in the SW. Looking to develop 10 trail hubs over the whole region. One of the major sites was Cardinham. Looking on their website they have a job advertised that is "Responsible for managing new off-road cycling projects at Lanhydrock, Cardinham Woods and Plymbridge, you’ll develop proposals and ensure everything is in place for eager visitors and families to set off and enjoy the new trails."

The funding contracts don't seem to have been signed, but maybe a trail centre at Cardinham? Wooohoo. About time too.

  • has been n the cards for a while now, Darry; down the barn was asked to help with it but turned it down as from what i remember him saying is that its a majority paperwork and meetings type job rather than the being out there doing it type,

cardniham makes sence in that its in the middle of the county and has relatively good access!
anything related to proper trails in our Fine county has to be a good thing though!!

am down the barn tomorow, wil askj the guys how the plans for the pump track etc are going!

Well I think that sounds pretty exciting (even though I knew about it from a conversation with you last week)!
  • Cheers Dazz! missed that this morning!!! did another google search but was before that thread had started!!
still undecided lol! Heart sais CARBON head sais the handsome dogg!! (not to mention wallet too! )
thing that keeps getting me is that it'll build up pretty much the same weight as the carbon bike was (newer frames are close to a pound less) and that was about spot on for me!
