I don't know what it is of late, but I seem to be cursed. Things break almost every ride, to the point that I've almost replaced every component. Since I posted in my last update, the reign and the ragley have both been gathering dust and cobwebs
The brake issue on the reign came to a head on friday, when I discovered that the pistons in my cheep and cheerful hayes where knackered. It was going to cost nearly £50 for all the parts. I looked into buying a replacement and I got the price of a matching brake down to £40. However, although I liked the hayes for their simple pad replacement, they where also cursed by this simple design.
Although the pads are held on with a bolt, and the bolt is held in with a small wire clip, it seems the clip and pin are made of marzipan. I've ridden many a harsh trial and I've lost the retaining pin on many of these harsh trails. If only it could be solved by ample bolt torquing, but as stated the bolt is made of marzipan - so any sign of a proper attempt at tightning and you strip the head, making it near enough impossible to get in or out ever again.
So this week I've been looking at brakes. Yes exciting, I know. Thing is for what is a basic peice of cast metal, and a few bits of rubber - disc brake systems are BLOODY EXPENSIVE . I wanted the best I could have. Ample power for properly stopping and controlling my not very light, high centre of gravity, fat ass.
In the end I had to plump for the four pot Avid Code 5 with a 203 rotor for £105. I wasn't keen on the idea, but they've had good reviews and are fairly reasonably priced. I only went for the avids as I couldn't afford - or get hold of a formula RX's, Hopes are good, but expensive and heavy, and at £200 EACH I really can't quite afford my local bike shop's suggestion without a mortgage... :roll:Big Rich of The Cornwall Mountainbike Club

Well timmo I just hope all is back with me for my ride on sunday,. I've ordered all my bits and have hopefully covered every base. However I think I'd have to grin and bare borrowing father's bike if things really don't go to plan, because I really don't want to let mark, or the club, down! I also have to run my membership forms to rach by hand tomorrow, because it'd just totally skipped my mind in the hecticness this last week. ooops.... Man, my feet just haven't left the ground these last three weeks and I just can't believe how bad my luck has been of late.... I really need to get back into coming every week. I just don't know if I'll actually be able to!
So far my current list is;-
Five modules with at least one 3,000 word essay each.
One 15,000 word dissertation,
At least an hour of piano practice a day as my music teach has now put me in for my grade 2.
I have a work based portfolio to finish, which is hours worth of work for my prof practice
I'm starting looking at teaching quals
oh and occasionally finding time for biking!
No wonder I forget to do things. I have so many things to do! Oh the life of a man doing two jobs and a degree part time... 'sigh' :roll:Big Rich of The Cornwall Mountainbike Club

Had to hold my mouth for fear of my jaw hitting the ground!
It's getting expensive now - £11.50 for some spd's . . . . . . and still looking for brakes
Had a look at the manual for the forks last night. Looks like I can strip them and by moving a shim get 100mm travel. 8)Stumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50

Well I skimpt on bodmin after killing what is undoubtedly the worst designed through axle system for a second time. Yeah my 15mm marzocchi QR handle is threaded on like a normal QR. Which is great, but ... when you undo the damn thing you undo the QR handle and end up eventually stripping the thread. A two week wait for a new one which has to come specially from windwave and will cost about £50. So as I didn't want to risk a flat, and I had spent the previous evening at a wedding - I decided to join my father on a much more sociable, slow 'road' ride on the reign.
We left from porthleven, towards gunwallow on the coast path, then down to church cove, up towards and into morgan, from morgan we headed (mistakingly) up then down into gweek, then from gweek to helston and back to port through penrose; managing a respectable 18 and a bit miles. Father had to give up as we entered port, as I think the successive massive hills might have done a disservice to his legs. Especially the one out of church cove through the golf course, the one up from morgan near little australia (it's a farm), the one out of gweek and the last big push up into helston - total respect, he only pushed right at the end of the last hill.
So now I sit and wait for my shiny new QR and also wait another 8 weeks for my shiny anodised blue superstar wheel/hub combo with tastful gold nipples for the ragley. I just need to finish the month with a final matching 203 code 5 purchase, so I don't have to rely on the rather ropey old hayes front disc system. I will be percuring a tasty M4 from timmo (cheers) to match up with my front mono 6 setup. And then everything will be peachy....
Then this:-
Just below the lever is a hole.
In that hole should be a bolt.
There is now only thread in 3/4 of the hole.
WHY? ... I swear I must be attracting bad luck.
So I either:
1a) leave it with one bolt
1b) fall from my steed
1c) rip out remaining bolt due to impact
1d)nacker the cylinder completely (inevitably resulting in the below choices)
2a) botch a repair with a helicoil kit.
2b) c*ck the brake up as I have no mechanical skill and don't know how to use a helicoil kit.
3a) hunt for a new mini master cylinder on ebay
3b) pay an extortionate price for a new mini cylinder as all tend to be attached to a brake of some sort
4a) buy a silver mini cylinder from CRC
4b) attempt to take apart the old cylider
4c) attempt to put all the bits back in the new cylinder
4d) die a little inside because the new cylinder is silver and wont match the rear black cylinder
4e) die a little more inside as I find the one weird, but ultimately crucial part left over from the attempted transplant.Big Rich of The Cornwall Mountainbike Club

dude, you really dont have mutch luck!!!
now!! pop the other bolt out and check whats left, chances are, all is not lost!!
can either retap or helicoil, could be an easy cheap fix! always try a wtd in the forums (stw is prolly better from my experience for parts like that!), or!! you may like this!! if all is lost, i have a lever in the shed attatched to my old mini that could be utilised!! 8) 8) although, would have to check what side it is!!
is easier being an outer bolt too, less lever matereal to get in the way when faffing with it!!Timmo.

Hello all. Been a bit busy of late so not had time for forum. I have moved to Truro now and am trying to find a route. I know theres Idless but I was wondering if I could get onto the path down the side of County Hall and whether it would lead me to the Devoran trail that leads to Portreath via you know where??0

Kernow - might be up for the odd night if you are up for it. I work in Truro & occasionally do eve rides in Idless etc.
There are a couple of ways to get out to Deveron from Truro. Down past Tesco there is a cycle track and there is a route off Treliske roundabout. James in Clive Mitchell will be able to introduce a few routes to you.Stumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50

Well I can't report I've been on any exciting rides of late. I have however a few exciting bits winging their merry way towards my ragley.
I'm still waiting patiently for the shiny wheels, which according to my estimates will arrive roughly about second week December. Hopefully delivered in time for my birthday or christmas. More likely to arrive after tho!
I have just bought some slightly less shiny, second hand 'grey' Crank Brothers Candy C's. Father bought me them of Ebay as payment for my second hand DMR V12's
They look white to me. I think mine will have mud damage. Nothing a little elbow grease won't shift.
He also manically then bought a full set of second hand 203mm Avid Codes. I was only after a front. I now have a front and two rears! They where a real steal tho. I'm now wondering what I should do with the reign. I would still like to get another Code 5 for the front, or I can try and fix my rather sorry mini lever on my Mono 6.
I also found out I've got a lovely little Bontrager HomeWrench 'repair' stand for my birthday (it kinda arrived today, and came with some landrover side steps, bizarrely). Which is a HOOOGE gert workstand to clamp my bike into whilst maintaining it. Or perhaps, knowing my luck - I should just leave it clamped in all the time. I seem to need to fix something most weeks!Big Rich of The Cornwall Mountainbike Club

Zesty??
yeah FSR_XC will be up for that in the future but at the moment I have loads of renovation work to do at home, plus a two year old and three week old baby to help the missis with so got my hands a bit full. Got the in-laws down this weekend so will have my first ride in ages with dad-in-law, will try one of the routes to Devoran I think.
