do not get worked up too much about average speeds as they are a very poor signifier of form/improvements. just keep getting the miles in, maybe build some interval work into your riding.

i recommend Pro overshows - i think it is the Tarmac H2O versions I have although i dont think there is much difference between both pairs they do. pro is the clothing/component arm of shimano and are very good

Cheers Fat Head.. I will look up the over shoes right now..

I am trying not to get hung up on the average speed thing... I am just chuffed that i did not get off and walk

Those over shoes look just the ticket... I see they do a mountain bike / commuting version as well... Thing is Ive got these shoes where the cleat is recessed between a fairly chunky tread...do you reckon yours will fit these...

  • Hi i just found this forum and am interested in meeting other cyclists to ride with.
I am currently running a hybrid bike and managing 50 miles without to much dificulty at about 14mph average.

I am not sure that I am quite at the level of other cyclists here but am keen to find out.

    I am based in Armadale.

I don't want to rant on too much just leave a quik introduction :)

hi, you will be fine. we are attracting more and more riders for our rides many of whom started off making similar posts to yourself, mentioning there own standards and whether they will 'fit in'....no-one has one said the pace is too fast...with our numbers growing you will find riders of your own standard who you can develop with.....

i'm based in whitburn btw so its nice to see more riders based south of the bathgate alps....if you send os65 your email address he will add you to our mailing list and you can see what we've been up to

    HI Warenbald
From what you are saying the you should be fine on our Saturday rides, why not come along and see what you think? We meet at the Korean War Memorial (between Bathgate and Linlitghow) at 9.00 every Saturday. There are a variety of fitness levels on the rides and no one gets left behind.

Alternatively we are having a bit of a social upstairs at the Black Bitch in Linlithgow this Friday at 8pm. Ehm, including West Lothian's ONLY bike quiz :o

Anyone can come along and partners are welcome, although it seems our respective partners aren't quite as enthusiastic

  • Thanks for that Fat Head, PM is away.
Hopefully I'll catch up with you soon.

    +++NEWS FLASH+++

Mrs OS65 now says she won't be putting pins anywhere near her eyes and might now be coming to the social, depending on whether we can get baby sitting for junior OS65.

Evidently a chance meeting with ElCampesino's better half has altered her preference

I'm well up for a run on 2nd Jan. I think I've got a fair idea of the general route Bill has in mind as well - a good hangover cure - ie every ***** hill in West Lothian

Nice one Jim! Any other takers for a New Year Hill Fest?

Epo-holic, we have not seen you for a long time now, how are things going and will you be maiking a come back at any time? How about joining us tonight at the hanger of anger turbo session at mine? Or can you make it out over the weekends?

I have Endura neoprene overshoes and they are good when it's wet but I also have the Gore fabric ones as well for the really cold dry days which are brilliant, but not cheap.

Any takers for tonight's turbo session at mine, usual format

I am surprised, Bill. Since when do you buy expensive stuff? :D

For some reaon, I use Planet X neoprene overshoes when it's cold and Gore waterproof jobbies when it's wet.

I can recommend both but the Gore ones are not very warm.

    I'll be there Bill.
I can't believe I enjoy cycling in a garage with seven other, sweaty, lycra clad men while Madonna plays in the background :?

  • Nobody mentioned Madonna.

I'll bring my earplugs if I ever make it to Torphichen.

I know, I said I'd make it today but I am working tonight. Sorry.

Looks like the die hards tonight again Matt !!!!

I have the thermal Gore ones which are brilliant as I get cold feet big time.

  • I picked up a pair of planet-x overshoes ad york rally earlier on in the year. It's finally getting somewhere near cold enough to wear them and so far I've found them great. The have a velcro closure down the back so they pull in nicely around my skinny ankles and given the fact that my feet have been on the warm side of cozy over the last few days commuting they should see me well when it gets really cold. They also have a nice open sole so mtb shoes aren't a problem.

We're riding down to the Clarion Easter meet next April It would be great to get a good size group riding down together, were staying in Hostels ot travel lodges for 2 nights to keep it economical.

Zonc, who is cycling down to the Easter meet with me has found some excellent accommodation for the Wednesday and Thursday night before Easter. if you're interested in cycling down we need to know sooner rather than later so rooms can be booked

    See accommodation below
The Youth Hostel does not have enough room - already booked!
They are cheaper than Travel lodge including breakfast.

its not only overshoes you bust up big boy but riding partners too, every trip out with you last winter resulted in bruises, bumps and aching legs!

i'm only riding at the weekends these days but hope to see you out some time 8)
  • See you there Andy
  • Hi guys,

Been a lurker on this website for a few months and thought I better introduce myself.

I'm from Linlithgow and was initially into MTBing but have recently done up a old road bike and am getting out regularly and really starting to enjoy it.

I've been reading this thread for a while and was thinking about joining you guys for a run but feel I am not up to standard yet. I currently am doing only 10-12 miles around Linlithgow-Threemiletown- Kingscavil area twice a weekend and feel that cycling to KVM to meet up would be just about enough for me !!

Should I aim for getting up to 20-30 mile standard before attempting to meet up?

    Hi Chris,

Why not try a Sunday run?

That way you don't have to cycle up Preston Road to the war memorial as we start from Linlithgow Cross.

The usual distance is anywhere between 40 to 60 miles however if you don't feel comfortable attempting that distance yet just come along and I will be happy to do a shorter route with you, as I'm sure some others may. (I struggle to keep up with most of the guys anyway!)

I'd be happy to head out with the bunch for 10-15 miles then turn back if you fancy it?

    Cheers,

    Grant

    Grantus,

Thanks for your kind offer. I think I may take you up on that on my next available Sunday. What time do you meet at Linlithgow Cross? How do you prepare for a run of 30 miles? Should I have breakfast? Should I take any food with me etc?

    Thanks

    Chris
