Unfortunately it's not as glamorous as that - it's a GT Avalanche (I bought her a 'proper' mountain bike in case I ever had to use it  )

Count me in for the mountain bike team, although can't do the ten under the ben if it clashes with Skye. Any of the others sound like a plan though.

Has any one got any spare spd pedals they'd like to sell or let me loan in exchange for a push up a hill?

I fancy doing this cross at plean on my mtb...

    Matt,

I can take my spds off the fixie and lend you them for next week if you want?

Are you out tomorrow? I'll bring them with me if you are.

P.S. Bill - I'll be at Avonbridge around 8.30-ish at the Caldercruix road junction. If we miss each other I'll just head on to the KWM for 9am - howzat?
  • Don't think I'll be out tomorrow. Struggling with a chest infection. Really, honest. Nothing to do with it being freezing!

the '10' events are very enjoyable. i did the moray round this season as part of a team of 3, very well organised and a good day out for the family as well - the prizes suck a bit though!

Matt - regarding the SPD's I've got a set that are already unattached to a bike. Used to use them on an old hybrid I had in London, now sitting around in my Box of Various Bits.

You are welcome to hang on to them until such time as I get a decent mountain bike which, given my recent purchase of Carbon, might be a while  Give me a shout if you want them.

I'll take you up on the offer as you are not currently using them, I'd feel guilty borrowing Grant's as it would put his fixed out of action.

Could you bring them to the social on Friday?

By the way do you have any cleats?

Hey Jazza, you missed a good ride - 7 of us out, following part of what was going to be the presidents run. I went out an hour earlier and clocked about 58 miles, the others about 44. Grant, as usual, put in the extra miles, maxing out at 85-ish. He'd got some new shorts too, from the M&S sale, I think he said :D

I'll bring them on Friday, sure, but I'm pretty sure I chucked the cleats out as they were pretty worn. It's this type though http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Shima ... 000000886/

    Cheers Foz, I'll get 'em
  • Matt - Quick tip, especially if, like me you pull up on the pedals a lot, unless you're really not sure about clipless pedals, I'd advise you go for the SH51 rather than SH56 (multi release) cleats. I've used SH56 cleats before now and have had some rather painful encounters with my saddle when I've tried bunny hopping on my MTB and unclipped accidentally. Haven't done it half as much with the SH51 cleats.

Dunno how much use this is to you but I've got at least 3 pairs of SPD pedals plus pair of pretty much unused cleats on my spare shoes (easilly taken off) here in Edinburgh. I'll probably never use them now as I've swapped over to Time pedals (better for my poor knees!) so if you're in the Haymarket area over the next week and want to take a pair of my hands for a few pennies I'd be happy to meet up (or you could drop by at the flat for a coffee).

    M@

p.s. Just though I'd let you know I was speaking to my dad earlier and it's looking like we may be having a GM Brennan Memorial ride/LCC president's run on the 7th December. Think I'm gonna head down for the weekend :)

well, the weather was certainly ok today but the roads on the higher ground may have been a bit dodgy from overnight snow

anyone make it out this weekend? i went out about 11am yesterday and went whitburn, armadale, westfield, avonbridge, california, shieldhill, slamannan, plean, over the climb passed the blackhill transmitter, then back through harthill and home. 30odd miles in total at an easyish pace.
  • Hi all,

Have recently moved out to Harburn and keen to get out for some weekend rides so just joined this forum. In the past I've always been into mountain biking - mostly xc / endurance but bought a road bike last year to try and get more regular riding in and am beginning to see the attraction . . . particularly just leaving the house, heading out on the road and seeing where it takes you . . . Any other Harburnites (or from somewhere nearby) on this forum ?

The only thing is that I get a damn sore lower back after using the road bike (especially longer runs ...) and have been wondering whether I have my bike set up correctly - any basic tips or things I should be checking ?

    Cheers 4 noo,

  • Mark,

Sounds good. Are you planning on heading out this saturday ? If so, I could nip over and meet you at the station at 8ish to head over?

    Cheers.

    Hi all,

Didn't quite manage 85 miles on Saturday - turned out to be 75 but did feel like 85 mind you!

Headed back on the A89 to Armadale after splitting from the bunch at Forrestfield - managed to keep sight of Bill Young until Blackridge when either he put the hammer down or I slowed up! He was taking it easy with a slow puncture and I was going hell for leather and he vanished into the distance....

WHAT IS IT WITH ALL THESE FIT OLD GUYS IN WEST LOTHIAN!!!!!????????

(Anyway, many thanks for the borrow of the helmet on Saturday Bill - I shall bring it with me on Friday night.)

Stopped for a sneaky roll and a coffee at Kathy's in Armadale before meandering out to Bathgate where I bumped into Sparky. He sent me off up Drumcross Road to the Knock - said it was very flat  :P

Only joking Sparky! didn't find it too bad apart from the first steep section on Drumcross Road as you head out of town and then the last steep ramp up to the Knock where I reckon I hit 2.5mph in 39*25!!

Headed down Preston road to Linlithgow then on to Polmont to see my mate and another quick coffee before heading home via Falkirk and Bonnybridge where I bonked big time - 85 minutes to do the final flattish miles from Polmont to Cumbernauld.

Reckon that Preston Road looks much harder than Drumcross Road - have only cycled down it so that is one for another day.

P.S. Matt - the shorts are Georgio d'Asda ACTUALLY

P.P.S. I will have my car on Friday so have room for three people if anyone is heading through from Falkirk area as I will be heading out that way from Cumbernauld
  • Hi all

Anyone bring their partner/wife/husband/spouse/companion along on Friday?

Funnily enough the prospect of a bike quiz didn't appeal to her..........

    On an altogether different tangent:

It had occurred to me that we could maybe do something as a group on 2nd Jan to blow the New Year cobwebs away?

How about a 30-40 mile run around the Bathgate Alps?

Bill told me on Saturday he had a cheeky wee 30 miler with 4000 feet of climbing he uses to train on.

I had thought about the 1st but that is just ridiculous!

Mrs Young will be sticking pins in her eyes as well !!!

Grant, I did not realise you were tailing me out to Blackridge or I would have waited on you mate. Just wanted to get back quickly to beat the slow puncture.

As for the old geezers in West Lothian being fit, it's all the sprinting through the mental villages in the area that does it, that and the local alps !!!

Turbo session still on tomorrow if anyone fancies coming along. Mine's for 7, start at 7.30 and finishes at 9.

    No worries Bill,

I know you were in a rush to beat the puncture.

I had intended heading back to Longriggend with the bunch but just decided to go for some extra miles and by that time you were outside shouting distance anyway!

I unfortunately cannot manage Tuesday night painfests as I tend not to finish work in Glasgow until 6pm and my other half plays netball so getting home and fed, etc., etc. is always a bit of a rush.

Perhaps one week i'll make a point of finishing early so I can come over and show the auld yins how it's done

Shame the run was cancelled at the weekend. At least there is a slight chance that I can get some more practice in before it is rescheduled. ( I wont call it training...that would be streaching it a little  )

On that note i had a run this afternoon before my nightshift. 42 miles around the bridges with the last 2 miles or so climbing 150odd meters. 3 hrs pedaling 3 1/2 hrs including stops mainly to defrost my feet. So going by the total time taken was 12 mph ish or going by the time spent pedaling its 14mph.. much better than i would have managed a few months ago. The last climb home from Grangemouth to Brightons wasnt more than a couple of minutes slower than when I do it on my 4 mile commute, It was however a hell of a lot more painful

Anyway Ive taken the car to work tonight :)

    Andy

P.S.can some one recomend some not too expensive overshoes brrrrrr!

do not get worked up too much about average speeds as they are a very poor signifier of form/improvements. just keep getting the miles in, maybe build some interval work into your riding.

i recommend Pro overshows - i think it is the Tarmac H2O versions I have although i dont think there is much difference between both pairs they do. pro is the clothing/component arm of shimano and are very good
  • I'm well up for a run on 2nd Jan. I think I've got a fair idea of the general route Bill has in mind as well - a good hangover cure - ie every ***** hill in West Lothian

I'm also planning to be out on New Year's morning - the only time I can be guaranteed to get the roads completely to myself.

I'm going to miss the extravaganza on Friday. Don't feel too sorry for me - might be business but it's a 4 star hotel and, apparently, a free bar for some of the night. Have a good one chaps.

Cheers Fat Head.. I will look up the over shoes right now..

I am trying not to get hung up on the average speed thing... I am just chuffed that i did not get off and walk
