I rode through Torphichen tonight around 8.40 on my way up to Cairnpapple hill. I wondered what the turbine like whine was as I passed through ..
I did a 15 mile loop from polmont through avon gorge, torphichen and up to the KWM ,stopped for a drink and a fag. then off down to linlithgow , which needless to say was a tricky decent and was a fair bit slower than it would have been in daylight. I did not notice it was wet till I stopped at the junction in Linlithgow that would explain the near crash on the zig zag on the way down  . Any way by the time I got back to polmont it had taken an hr and 20 including the stop. It was a crappy time I know but it was a fair old head wind from Linlithgow into Polmont. ( well it felt like it anyway.)
On a side note I was starting to get cramp in my calves an the way up to kwm from Torphichen....Is that purely down to a lack of salt or are there any other causes?
All the traffic seemed to give me more room whilst riding in the dark than in the daytime which was a bit strange. Very welcome none the less..

Magnesium deficiency. Take a magnesium supplement and the cramps will go away.

It could also be dehydration, drink more before and during a ride, also try stretching more, and er, cut out the fags!
OS 650 -
The Met Office has issued a blizzard warning for the weekend.
Is the president's run going ahead in any weather?
EC0 -
Any sign of moisture ingress and I will be washing my hair0
-
We'll have to go past your house and drag you out, then.
Or come in an have a cuppa before returning home.0 -
Could we bring it forward to Saturday - the last I checked the forecast was quite good for that day?0
-
Might be a good idea.
Or postpone it ...
... until June.0 -
Cheers for the cramping tips... And good luck with the weather for the weekend.0

PRESIDENT'S RUN
due to a combination of cold weather, wind and rain the president's run for sunday is postponed. the conditions on the day will be too much of a lottery to spend what will be a long day out on the road. we can do this ride another time.
for those who want a run, turn up at kwm saturday or lithgow cross as normal.
os65, please circulate this to all on the mail list0 -

Which one? Your 80 miles to Gleneagles and back ride?0
-
-
12-13mph? I wasn't planning to time-trial it.0
-
Or an alternative route?
I am just keen to get big miles in at the minute at slow speeds for building up some stamina and endurance as well as trying to burn some fat.
After Crimbo I will work at trying to improve the intensity I can ride at as I still find it hard riding with the group if the pace lifts slightly and when we hit any hills.
For example on Saturday's run out from Bridgend to Winchburgh Bill and Sadiq looked effortless at the front whereas I was really feeling it in the legs trying to hold a wheel.
P.S. I posted some pics on the flickr page which are from mtb'ing in 2006. Tenuous links to WLC however they are bike related so I stuck them up! They can kick off the WLC mtb division!
On that subject - are there any takers to form a wlc team for 'Ten under the Ben' in may?0 -
folks, to clarify on the postponement of the president's run, we are going for safety first on this. wind and rain is one thing, but there will be a strong weather front passing over in what are very cold conditions making conditions on the day too much of a lottery. we dont expect perfect weather this time of the year but for safety and enjoyment we should do this run another time as, whatever the weather, it will be a long day on the road. rather than wait till last minute weather reports to commit to the ride it is best to decide one way or the other a few days in advance and erring on the side of caution is the way to go here.
thanks to all who expressed an interest to take part, members and non-members alike, I hope you will do the same when we reschedule. remember, there are still planned rides saturday and sunday.....0 -
Can't make it out this Saturday so planning to brave teh weather on Sunday. Anybody else planning to to do the same?
Grant - funnily enough I was just thinking about entering a mountain bike event. Only problem is I'm doing the Etape Caledonia on 17th May and possibly the Skye Mor on 30th.
Mike0 -
Mike,
If you are interested in a mountain bike event we could chew it over next time we're out on the road?
They also run '10' events down at Kirroughtree which is an amazing route and up at Moray - as well as the Selkirk Merida at the start of August and the Penrith Merida in September. They also run Saturday sportives at the mtb marathons now so a 50 mile road sportive and 50km mtb marathon on the Sunday is an option?
Cheers,
Grant0 -
Guys,
I am up for being part of a team for ten under the ben. Like Mike I am also doing the same events but should be fairly fit at that time of year so if there are any volunteers lets get organised now.
I will be out on Saturday morning for 4 hours so if anyone wants a decent run I will see you at the KWM.
Bill0 -
Hi Bill,
I think the 10 under the Ben coincides with the Skye event unfortunately - May 30th.
Any thoughts on a route for tomorrow or play it by ear and see who turns out?
Grant0 -
I will be heading out at 8 so I could cycle over to meet you and we could make our way to the KWM if you want?
Bill0 -
I'll head out early and meet up at the KWM for 9
Might also be up for this 10 under the ben thing, but I ain't wearing baggy shorts and letting my hair grow!
OS650 -
Lets get a team organised and get an entry in. How about 4 volunteers? me for starters, any more??
Bill0 -
I am going to do it however I have two friends who also want to do it so if WLC can muster a team of 3 or 4 it would mean we could enter two teams - a fast one and a slow one!
Or if it's just Matt & Bill interested I could team up with one of my mates (the other guy is only thinking about it now anyway - I might even be able to recruit him into the Clarion!)
Bill, I could meet you at Avonbridge if you want?0 -
If you want to go off-road, do it properly and use dropped handle bars.

Tobias,
Unfortunately my mountain bike is out of commission at the minute or I would give it a bash. However, if there are entries on the day I could try and get it fixed next week.
Are you going to do it? If there will be a WLC presence then I'll go. In fact, I'll say yes for definite and I'll use my good lady's mountain bike!0 -
Oops, I've just re-read the ad - there are entries on the day so I'm a yes if any other WLC members will give it a shot.0
-
What the the pink one with the white tyres and the basket?
I probably do it. It's just around the corner. Mind you, I'll probalby come last.0
