    Hi Chris,

Why not try a Sunday run?

That way you don't have to cycle up Preston Road to the war memorial as we start from Linlithgow Cross.

The usual distance is anywhere between 40 to 60 miles however if you don't feel comfortable attempting that distance yet just come along and I will be happy to do a shorter route with you, as I'm sure some others may. (I struggle to keep up with most of the guys anyway!)

I'd be happy to head out with the bunch for 10-15 miles then turn back if you fancy it?

    Cheers,

    Grant

    Grantus,

Thanks for your kind offer. I think I may take you up on that on my next available Sunday. What time do you meet at Linlithgow Cross? How do you prepare for a run of 30 miles? Should I have breakfast? Should I take any food with me etc?

    Thanks

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

I am new to this cycling thing but found a couple of bananas and a half litre of sugary juice helped loads whilst under way and a big bowl of porride an hour before starting out helped too. I tend to skip breakfast on a daily basis but having eaten before heading out on the bike helped loads . just about everyone else here will know better than me though so I would go with what they say :)

    Chris,

The Sunday run starts at 9am from the cross.

I will have either a bowl of porridge or 4 weetabix for breakfast before heading out.

I've went out a couple of times without eating but it's a recipe for disaster for me as I will really struggle within an hour or so.

If you have a good breakfast and bring out a couple of bottles of water and a cereal bar or two or a couple of bananas that will be more than enough for 30 miles.

    Cheers,

    Grant

Here's a link about how to prepare for a longer ride, basically, it says the same as our resident nutritional experts :)

  • A bowl of good-quality organic porridge keeps you going for a couple of hours. Well, it keeps me going for a couple of hours, anyway.

If you top up with an energy gel or a bar during the ride, you'll manage to do our Saturday ride without bonking. Mind you, even a bowl of porrige doesn't make up for a lack of fitness.

As Grantus says, come out on a Sunday and we'll find someone who does a shorter ride with you if you want to take it easy.

    Cheers,

    EC
  • Grantus, OS65, EC,

Thanks guys for your help and tips.

I normally go out without breakfast and can only last an hour so will try the porridge route and bring some bananas etc. Who knows I may last a bit longer !!

I will aim to meet up this Sunday (30th) at the Cross for 9.

    See you there?

forecast looks very good for both Saturday and Sunday.

Starting off with fog tomorrow and perhaps some frost and supposedly clear and bright on Sunday and around 1 or 2 degrees.

I won't be out tomorrow morning as I will be getting my car repaired however I will try and take advantage of the good forecast and come out on Sunday.

Chris, if you're there on Sunday I'll do a shorter run with you if you want, depending on where the bunch decide to go.

It's a nice flat ride out to the Forth Bridges and we could head back from there via Bo'Ness perhaps - probably be around 20-25 miles all-in from Linlithgow.

or the Sunday run could take a wee detour via Plean Park and cheer on Matt and Tobias in the WLC Cyclo-cross challenge! :D
  • Thanks Grant, that's the last thing I need - spectators witnessing my embarrasing performance. I thought you are coming, too?

    Ah, erm,

I'll chicken out of this one Tobias and have a gentle 'pootle' round on Sunday with Chris if he comes out.

If not I'll wing my way over to Plean Park to watch you and Matt 'take one for the team' against the crossers!
  • I completely understand Grant. I am beginning to regret having started this off. Not only do I lack the fitness at the moment but I have to strip down my Jamis incl. the dynamo lights, double stem and whatnot - something I don't have time to do, really. But we'll see.

Well Tobias, there'd be no harm in letting the Cyclocross wait for another day - it's not as though you'd lose any money as you were going to get an 'on the day' entry weren't you?

Hats off, however, if you decide to go through with the race :)

P.S. if you don't consider yourself fit enough then what chance do I have? I couldn't keep up with you the other week while you were riding that big touring tank of a bike and I was on my good bike
  • That's why I was hoping you'd come along - to make me look faster :D

The big touring tank is my cyclocross bike! That's the reason why it would take me so long to convert it back to its former glory (usually not a problem but I have to write three university assignments in the next three weeks).

    Herr Campesino

You can't drop out now! I was only going to enter as your domestique. You're the man who has all the experience, the man who knows what he's doing, plus it's the only time you could get away with hairy legs in a race...

C'mon fella, get that bike sorted....you'll also need to take the kitchen sink off it too.

    os 65
  • I'll need the sink to wash the mud off my hairy legs after the race.

My domestique? Are you sure you can cycle slowly enough without falling off?

  • But they are forecasting arctic temperatures and snow :?

Ok, then. We'll talk about the arrangements tonight.

Looks like the Sunday run may swing past Plean after all

 Shall I bring my camera in the interests of adding to the Flickr page
    :?:
    :D
  • Yeah, come along ...

... I am sure I'll get an opportunity return your favour.

    he-he,

    Probably sooner than you think!

I may be last man off on the boxing day time trial so you'll get to see me splutter over the line in a fashionably slow time
  • Hm, unfortunalty I'll be in the old country at Christmas. But I have a very small camera and my time will come.

Ah, I've just thought of a good excuse. Do I need to wear a helmet on Sunday? My haid isn't used to one. Like baseball caps they restrict blood flow to the brain ...

Yeah you will need a helmet, luckily I've got some spares...

By the way, its not the size of you camera that matters, its how you use it :P
  • Cheers, but I have my own helmet somewhere in my garage (last worn during the Etape Caledonia and I only just escaped a brain haemorrhage). Or I could get one of those embarrassing huge 1980s ones, with a WLC sticker on it.

Fortunately, I know how to use my small, er, camera; years of practice.
  • Matt

Do I need to bring a bag tonight? For my 'most improved foreign rider of the year' trophy?

Anyone want to swap an almost brand new 10 speed Dura Ace band-on front mech for a brace-on of the same spec?

    Nice one Chris,

See you on Sunday at 9!

P.S. Hope there are no spillages this morning - the roads looked quite icy through here in the West so I opted to drive to work rather than cycle.

Very enjoyable night last night as well with good company and a good laugh.
