No need for that. Just create your own category:
    - Flat bars
    - Hub Gears
    - Folding bike
    - Long haired
    - Foreign
All of these are achievable and we have enough trophies to cover them.

I'm a definite maybe for tomorrow as long as the gale that's blowing out east here calms down enough to give me a daylight departure time.

I will be setting off at 8 for a few extra miles. Got a good route in mind that takes in a few hills to suit all, probably meet grantus at 9.30am Avonbridge. I will look after him intil you guys get there, it's Avonbridge we are talking about here !!!!

Glad you enjoyed the turbo session in the shed of dread, those big gear pyramids are the daddies for leg strength.

    See you tomorrow.

I was hoping to make my first appearance tomorrow but a weekend of nightshifts has put paid to that...On a side note Ive fitted some mudguards to my tricross .Only they dont seem to cover enough back wheel to avoid spraying those folk behind me ( like I am going to be in front of anyone  ). They stop a good couple of inches above the horizontal centerline of the wheel if that makes any sense. Do you guys use longer mud guards than that?

    Perhaps next saturday for me..

Strike that next saturday comment  .

I had a wee cycle after work sunday morning and went from BP in Grangemouth up to Polmont then into Linlithgow and on up to the KWM. Which I did not know existed ,Its a very nice little spot. I then carried on for a few hundred yards before taking the right down into Torphichen, through torphichen down the dip and up the otherside to join the A706 briefely before going through the Avon Gorge and on to Maddiston and home to Brightons.

16 miles and it took me an hr and 20 mins  including a short stop at the KWM. OK so It probably wasnt my best performance since I was carrying a pannier and being after a 12 hr nightshift and having not eaten since 8hrs previously but I think I need a bit more practice...and some warmer socks or overshoes.I dont think my feet have ever been that cold, whilst at the same time sweating so much that It was running down my arms into my gloves

Anyway I will see how it goes and may or may not see you all next saturday.

I've made a Flickr page for the Club. I've also created a 'Pool' so If anyone has any photos (or movies) of members of the West Lothian Clarion, or ones inspired by the clarion, they can make a flicker account (its easy!) join up to the 'Pool' and upload them.

Below is the link to the West Lothian Clarion flickr page, and the 'Pool', mainly showing photos from last Saturday's run and a Saturday run back in May...

Hi Richard - glad yo got out on a ride.

Why not come along for a bit? you can always turn off and follow a different route, we don't go too far from Brightons...

  • Good stuff, Matt. Even if some of the photos are not particularly flattering.

Including pics of the bumblebee kit might have been a bit hasty, though

  • Congratulations. This seems to suggest that it is time for our own website and forum

Disagree with you on this one (for the moment). Without the presence on Bikeradar, I would never have picked up on the Clarion. Wait till we've got enough members to become a proper clique, I reckon.

How did the assessment go on Saturday?

  • It's probably just a question of time before BR kick us out because we are clogging up their server. Or perhaps not; we are only using a few KBs.

The recci was fine but the course isn't brilliant. Poor road surfaces, plenty of traffic island, junctions, bus routes and a village complete with a signallised pedestrian crossing.

Perhaps we should have a look at the A904 and A89 instead and have the TT on a Sunday morning!?

    Hi Andy,

12mph for those 16 miles ain't too bad - that's a fair old climb up from Grangemouth to the War Memorial.

You sound similar to me in terms of your speed and I can keep up with the bunch on 80-90% of terrain.

Anyway, even if you do fall behind Matt is always there to give you a push back into the peloton!

Anyways, what a wind that was on Saturday! I felt really strong all the way to Winchburgh and over the forth bridge then I turned for home at Dunfermline and hit the wind :x

Got home at 3.45 after 92.5 miles (don't forget the half  ) at an average speed of 11.9mph.

Doesn't sound fast but at some points on the way home it was a struggle to turn 39*25 on fairly flat roads :o

Once over the bridge I followed the usual Sunday route through Inverkeithing and right then left at the two roundabouts that are almost joined together and onto the Cowdenbeath road. After about half a mile I turned left to head for Dunfermline up a really steep climb. After negotiating the dual carriage-way through Dunfermline I joined the A823(?) and climbed out of the town and up past Knockhill race track then picked up the Sunday route with a left down to Saline then on to Forest Mill for coffee and fresh pancakes (what a great cafe', they let me in even though my arse was hanging through my shorts  ). From Saline downhill to Forest Mill was actually a real struggle to make decent progress. Less than 10mph downhill.

After that it was along the A977 to the new forth crossing and home via Skinflats, Larbert & Bonnybridge.

As a 'by the way' - that A823 would make a cracking run for a longer Sunday outing. We could head out to Fife via the bridge as usual then branch left to Dunfermline and follow the road over Knockhill to Powmill, Dollar then through Glendevon and down to Gleneagles.

From there it would be a levelish to downhill run back to Stirling via Braco and Greenloaning or a hilly effort to Blackford then over Sherrifmuir to Bridge of Allan and back home.

    Any takers?
  • 'Longer Sunday outing' seems a fair description for this ride.

I might be interested but only if you promise to wear different shorts :D

:( My poor shorts! They've got good ventilation but, unfortunately, little else going for them now.

That's why I stay at the back, I don't want all the boys looking at my arse - and you all thought I was just slow and lazy :P
  • You certainly deceived me on Saturday.

I think the run I described would be 80-85 miles or thereabouts from Linlithgow cross

the A89 is actually a good shout for a time trial course, from blackridge out to forrestfield is very nice and broad without any bad bends....would be pretty fast too

grant, ignore the taunts, your shorts are fine

    Hi all,

Thought I'd take this opportunity to jump into the forum and say hi! The thought of Matt (I'm assuming there's only one Matt here?) always being there to help and push you back in the peleton brought back memories of Lancaster CC touring weekends when I was young. I remember Matt always being there when I inevitably started to flag at the end of a long ride.

Been following the forums for a while now and keep saying that I'll come over and have a ride something (I'm based in Edinburgh, near Haymarket so it's only a quick hop over on the train). I'm very interested to hear you're planning some races next year too. Might have to get my TT bike sent up from home!

I'll make it to a ride eventually!

    Hi Matt
Good to hear from you! I saw you flash by in Edinburgh the other week but you were going too fast to see me when I shouted form the pavement!

It would be great to see you out here. PM me your email and I'll stick you on the mailing list.

Ah, Lancaster CC good times eh!

    and so......

I know Matt and I have got Linlithgow- Ramsbottom at Easter to the Clarion Meet and hopefully some TT's for the summer - and of course The Ride of the Falling Rain. Then, as a desert the Duo Normande in September, .....finally back into hill climbs.....

    Any other thoughts?

  • Duo Normande? That sounds fun! Especially on fixed :D

Just been looking at the duo-normande web-site http://www.duonormand.com/accueil.php. Worth a look just for the ammusing literal translations in the English version such as the notice to 'runners who are not bachelors' (non-licencies in french)!

I wish you both best of luck in that!

    M@

edit: forgot to say, the ride down to Ramsbottom sounds fun too. dunno what my timetable at uni is like for next year yet. you mention hill climbs? Is this on the infamous Rake? Being one of those lunatics that actually enjoys entering hill-climbs that sounds kinda fun!

Matt, I think it must be the Rake - how can you have a hill climb it Ramsbottom and it not be the rake!

We are picking up Tim in Lancaster - maybe your dad would like to come to?

    OS 65

PS I'll be at Bills Hanger of Anger tonight!
  • guess it was a stupid question really! There IS only 1 hill in Ramsbottom when it comes to hil-climbs!

Might not be able to make part/all of the ride down but I'll mention it to my dad and keep it in mind if I'm not too busy.

I keep seeing mentions of 'Bill's Hanger Anger' - Scary sounding stuff! lol
