Hi numbnuts - don't worry about not being made welcome at the Clarion.

As for elite riders, I don't know about that! But there's definitely far too many fit old boys who constantly give me a showing up

Saturday rides are around 35-50 miles and Sundays are around 55-70 - 15mph average is typical.

I get dropped on all the hills however the rest will wait for me up ahead

Couldn't use my hands until a few minutes ago; it really was cold on Sunday.

Embarrassing start under the WLC Clarion banner the 'didn't finish part' but after I came off in my third round I couldn't get back on the bike again because I had cramps in both legs. The alcohol Saturday night might have had something to do with it. As has the fact that I had to chase after Matt for 18 miles even before the race started. And then there is obviously the handicap of being old and overweight ...

Ah, behold the Rider of the Golden Wheel (you probably don't recognise me with a brainreducer on).

    Hey Chris,

No worries about Sunday. It was a bit treacherous and probably best to wait for better weather for your first run so there's more chance of you enjoying it rather than worrying about falling off.

Why not try the boxing day 10 mile time trial? If that's your usual distance then it'll give you a benchmark to build upon in the new year?

Anyway, the offer for a shorter Sunday run still stands the next time you want to come out!

    Cheers,

    Grant

Thanks Grant. Feel bad wimping out but I had been checking the met office website all Sat night and looked outside in the morning and just thought it would be too cold / dangerous.

I will let you know when I can make the next Sunday run and take you up on your offer.

with all this icy weather not been out on the bike since a week ago on saturday :x

this has disrupted our weekend rides somewhat - for the newbies hoping to come out with us dont be put off if you have turned up at the meeting points and met few other riders, once the weather gets milder the turnout will be better. i came off on ice more than once last year and do not want to do it again.

numbnuts - i understand your frustrations with the other club in the area, we are getting a good core of non-racing riders together who want to get better, i'm sure if you and your friends come out on a run you will enjoy yourselves.

I don't even own a bike with dropped handlebars but the Clarion West Lothian Roadies have made me welcome. There's competitive guys but absolutely no elitism (and whilst I've been out with them, nobody has been left behind). Look forward to seeing you and your mates out soon.

    Cheers

    Chris,

Don't worry about 'wimping out' - we've all done it at some point!

To be honest I turned up at the Cross at 9 and there was no-one there and I was actually hoping no-one would turn up so I could just go home again!

    Chris,

Should add that Keith and Neil braved the conditions and we had a quick blast for an hour which was enjoyable enough given the conditions however you've always got ice at the back of your mind.

If it's like that again I'd probably give it a miss as well

Good to see you're in for the Bealach Beag. You up for anything else from Hands-On?

Not at the moment, no. I've spotted a week run of weekends in April & May. An audax from Forfar, the Drumlanrig, the Bealach Beag, the Etape Caledonia. That could keep me sated for a while

Just back from an Hourey on the Bowery

Got the cables cut,the fixed sprocket secured and covered 19 miles. All I will say is listen to the advice of OS65 when he says remember to keep pedaling  especially at junctions !!!

    Bill
I think the 46x17 gearing will be OK for anything other than Preston Road/Puir Wifes Brae type of climbs.

I wont be out at all this weekend so have a good one.

I don't think I'll be out tomorrow as I've not been feeling too hot this week.

Forecast is reasonable for the weekend so I may venture through on Sunday morning depending on how i'm feeling.

    Sparky,

Thanks for the borrow of the stem however it's the same length as the one i've got fitted so perhaps a 90mm is the way to go.

Good to see you've joined the fixie ranks although I fear we've some way to go to match OS65 - it's nothing short of OBSCENE the way he goes up hills on that thing!

    Bill,

Many thanks for the loan of the helmet 2 weeks ago. I had brought it along with me last Friday night however as you said events took over and you couldn't make it along! I'll keep it safe and drop it off next time I pass the 'Hanger'.

I'm planning to head up to the KWM for 9 tomorrow. First Saturday in ages that I can make it for.
  • I don't think I'll be there tomorrow. It's back to the books again and the 9am start means that half the day's gone by the time we come back.

Anyway, enjoy and see you soon.

    Hey EC
you could always head out an hour early, meet up with the guys at 9.00 and then head back early

Bill - I reckon you should be able to get up Preston road on that gearing - you'd be surprised how much easier it is on a fixed

    just keep pedaling :P

I donnt mind at all if I end up there on my own. It will just be good to get out on the bike and for the journey to end at my house instead of at work.Just dont expect anything resembling fitness from me and you wont be dissapointed If your there I will see you Saturdayat 9.If not I might just manage Sunday No promises though.

    Cheers fellas

  • Thanks for an enjoyable day out. It felt really good to be out in company and although I struggled abit with the hillls and was a bit wiped at the end I was pushed more than I have been for a while which is no bad thing. Definately need to spend more time in the hills and I think that will be my challenge for the winter is to get some climbing legs.
I wont be out next week due to work commitments but I will catch up again soon.
Thanks again to everyone for an enjoyable morning.

    Mark
  • Which way did you all head? A lack of daylight and the need to take main roads meant that I didn't get there until just before 9:15. I came up from the Linlithgow side hoping that you'd have headed that way but it looks I chose poorly. I headed down to Avonbridge just in case you were going to wait on Grantus but, again, nobody there.

Caught up with Matt on Linlithgow High Street on the way home mind so it wasn't a complete social blank.

I think today was about as cold as I've been this winter and the roads as treachorous as I've seen. Should maybe have headed south to the sunny side of the hills.

I had a good time as well Mark ,I know what you mean about the hills though. The last run up to the car was a bit
I would have been able to say how far we went if after my puncture I hadnt put the front wheel on the wrong way round leaving my speedo useless.
A big thanks to TP01 (really sorry but I am terrible with names)and the other fella from linlithgow  . It was good of you both to keep the pace down and thanks for waiting . On the flip side I think we all improved our ice riding technique.

    Till next time

we went east towards along the south edge of becraigs before taking the longest route ive ever seen to get to dalmeny estate, had a wee pootle round there before heading back to linlithgow from Kirkliston.. I cant shed much more light than that as Ive never been on most of those roads before.. I am guessing about 30 odd miles worth. It was 50/50 on which way we went but I can only guess that TP01 suggested Dalmeny as it was reasonably flatish compared to 'up the braes' and so would be easier for the newbies ( ME)

Glad you had a good time yesterday - Saw Malcolm in Linlithgow and only just recognised him, his nose was the only part of his body open to the elements...he looked a bit cold - sorry for keeping you nattering Malcolm!

I was the only rider out on the Sunday Run, unless some left dead on time. Took it easy 'cos it was still frosty and I still had to work through the wine I'd drunk the previous evening.

Headed down to S. Queensferry via Kirkliston and stopped off at Craigies farm shop for a coffee - well worth a visit by the way.

On the way back I upped the pace into the wind and did some circuits of a loop I ride around Winchburgh.

Set off back home but went up Kinngskavil... on my fixed gear  Every pedal stroke was like a standing start on the track

The hedges were being cut so i took a diversion over the tops past the KWM and Beecraigs, I reckon about 45 miles all in...Feeling it in my legs now

The frost had disappeared by about 10.30 so the minor roads were (just) usable, up until then I kept to the main roads which were fine...

See you at Bill's on Tuesday...
