  • Yeah, We have the first proper frost I've seen on the roofs here in the big smoke so far this winter.

Really enjoyed last night. Thanks everyone for making a newbie feel welcome!

Sorry our team had to beat you all in the quiz though!

Hope to see you all down the road sometime soon!

Pfff! I thought our team was doing well with 19 correct answers however we must bow down to the Jedi-like knowledge of Matt, Foz and Foz's better half!

29/35 - taking Anoraks to a new level

Hope to see you all down the road sometime soon!

Tomorrow at the cross :?:
  • Yup, made it back and stayed vertical all the way - could have snapped my ears off without me knowing by the end mind. Will get the guards properly sorted for next time (or turn the radio up louder).

Is the question list from last nights quiz going to be published?

    Cheers

    Guys,

Sorry I missed last night also. I had to go to Largs at 7pm to take a spare part to one of my engineers and had to give him a hand when I was there. Anyway spare part faulty and I had to travel to Glasgow and back to Largs again to get the job completed.
Got home after midnight and not impressed at missing the social as I was all geared up to win the quiz !!!
Hope you all had a great night and will see you next Saturday.

    Epo, Malcolm

Sorry I did not make it this morning as I got in really late and with the hard frost decided to give it a miss, hope you stayed upright !!

    See you soon,

    Rgds, Bill

    Nice one Chris,

See you on Sunday at 9!

P.S. Hope there are no spillages this morning - the roads looked quite icy through here in the West so I opted to drive to work rather than cycle.

Very enjoyable night last night as well with good company and a good laugh.

    Grant,

Just looked at the weather outside and it looks bad. Going to wimp out. Sorry. Will let you guys know the next time I can make a Sunday run. Good luck to those who are going out today !!

Just got back from the Cyclo Cross at Plean. EC and I rode up along the canal in the morning - quite cosy in our Winter gear.

But when we arrived at the Country Park it was freezing, in fact -4! Water bottles had turn to lumps of ice. We got the shivers before the start but had a cuppa and rode the route - it was about 6-mins in length at racing speed. There was a split between cross and mtb bikes, evidently last year there were more mtbs

The course was frozen, icy and treacherous in parts, the only dismount was a run up a bank but there was a variety of terrain - boggy, long climbs, frozen ruts, rocks and a twisty woods section, it seemed more like an XC course.

The start was mental, everyone gunned for the front, and some of the first corners were pretty hairy. I came a cropper on one, sliding along the fire road - ouch! I came off a about three times in total, my tyres were sliding all over on corners and especially at the bottom of steep descents

I never managed to fit spds (couldn't remove my old pedals) but I think it worked out fine 'cos it was easier to put a foot down, Towards the end of the race my transmission was covered in frozen mud and had stopped working, I only had 2 gears - big ring and little ring. I reckon it held me back a bit, but the main problem was getting used to riding off road - fast. I finished in the back quarter of the field in the end, it was a good training ride! About as tough as one of bill's turbo sessions.

The commentator was great - sounded like Bill McLaren and he gave the Clarion a few shout-outs, he called me a good union man at one point!

The race was really well organised. Stirling bike club did a fantastic job and the marshals were really encouraging too. The atmosphere seemed more relaxed that road races

A great sight at the end was seeing on of the fast MTBers in a cut off t-shirt and 6-inch beard that had frozen solid! see link

EC didn't managing to finish - he cramped up half way through - not been taking the magnesium pills then.

We rode back home in the freezing cold, it took about 10 miles to warm up. Would I do it again? Not this year but I'd try a few again next year. It felt safer less stressful than road races because the bunch gets split up and you end up riding in small groups. Its a tough work out but the speeds arn't as high and its nice not having to worry about cars.

There were also categories for under 7s to 12s so could be a good way to introduce kids to racing

Here is a picture of me here - looking a bit like a fish out of water

    And EC here:

++Update. I didn't do as badly as I thought: 28th out of 68 (including non finishers)

The Social was great on Friday - 25 turned up and it was nice to meet all the partners. We stayed out 'till about 12.30 suppin' and chatting. Lets do the next one on 'tother side of the Alpes :D

Brian won the ride of the year, as voted by the membership, for his incredible show at the Fred Whitton . I've got a couple of framed certificates - one for Brian and one for Bill (holder of the sea-sky challenge record) let me know when I can hand 'em over

Hats off to Matt, Foz and Foz's better half - only 6 questions wrong! And it wasn't, exactly, an easy quiz.

Thanks to DJ Bob and the management at the Black B+tch for free room - I don't reckon we could have fitted any more in! And a big thank you to Robin at the Bike and Ski Clinic for donating the prizes for the quiz

Anyone out on the club run today?

Hats off to Matt and Tobias for the effort at Pean Park.

It was FAR too cold for me to come past and take any action photos so apologies to Tobias as I know he was desperate to get some posted on Flickr

I set of from Cumbernauld in the car yesterday morning to head through to the Cross for 9am. Very cold in Cumbernauld but no frost however heading out past Falkirk you could tell it was getting colder. Freezing fog and frost so heavy on the ground it looked like snow.

Arrived at the cross at 9. Keith from South Queensferry turned up just shortly afterwards for his first venture out with the Clarion. Frozen beard and all!

Neil (Holdsworth) arrived to make up the trio.

We decided that an hour would be more than enought given the conditions and given the fact I had my shorts on

We headed out at a brisk pace to Winchburgh before heading under the Motorway and back to Linlithgow via the Champany Inn Road. Around 14-15 miles and I can still feel it in the legs today as Neil can fairly motor and I was having to push really hard to keep in contact with him.

All-in-all a nice 'lung opener' given the conditions and no falls which was a bonus!

Got back to the car at 10am and just headed for home - did consider going up to Plean but the weather made my mind up for me.

Defo need to conform and get a pair of longs as yesterday was just a tad too cold for shorts

I can't speak for the whole team, but in my case it's simple - too much time reading cycle mags and therefore not enough time on the road

So the goal for next year has to be to beat all my PBs and convincingly lose the quiz

Thanks again to Bike & Ski Clinic for our prizes.

funny you should say that as my thoughts were very similar: 'I must get out more!'

...the other alternative is to get a book stand to place in front of you on the turbo trainer and excel at both

    Hey Chris,

No worries about Sunday. It was a bit treacherous and probably best to wait for better weather for your first run so there's more chance of you enjoying it rather than worrying about falling off.

Why not try the boxing day 10 mile time trial? If that's your usual distance then it'll give you a benchmark to build upon in the new year?

Anyway, the offer for a shorter Sunday run still stands the next time you want to come out!

    Cheers,

    Grant

    Ok, here's her starter for 10: -

    Purple ribble bike

    Bright Yellow long-sleeved shirt

Black lycra shorts (with rear ventilation )

Silver mtb shoes (not very authentic, I know!)

Black sports socks (2 furra pound!)

    Blue helmet ( )

    Back left of peloton

Tell her if she sees me she can have an autographed pair of holey shorts
  • Just become aware of your existence and me and a couple of my mates have been looking for a group to ride with that are not full on elite road club guy's. Tried Falkirk bike club but too elite and not vey friendly, your either in or your out!!

We would be interested in attending some of your rides, 2 of us being from Stenhousemuir and the other being from Edinburgh so half way would suit us all. What sort of distance/pace is you Saturday and Sunday runs during the winter?
