    No, I paraphrased a bit
  • I that case you could have made the weather sound a bit worse. :D

Something along the lines of 'The two brave riders gave their utmost to uphold the good name of the West Lothian Clarion by completing the gruelling ride in unbelievably harsh conditions including driving rain and hailstorms - something, which only a small fraction of the starters achieved.'

I rode the 4th Cat Glasgow Grand Prix on Saturday. First Crit I've ever entered and my first road race for 9 years.

The course was a short and tight 800 meter circuit around Glasgow Green, with no other traffic (apart from the odd Jack Russell)

It had rained all morning so in the photos the riders look like they've been riding a cross race.

Before the start I was pretty nervous and I naively positioned myself at the back of the group on the start line thinking I could make my way to the front in the neutralised lap. WRONG!

I managed to get half way up and then the race exploded. The front of the bunch hammered into the slippy first and second corners and pulled away while I as trying to tag onto their last man.

For the next ten laps, myself, a Falkirk BC rider and a guy from Johnstone Wheelers tried vainly to get back to the leading group of 9, while pulling the pack behind us.

Fathead was in the watching crowd and every lap I could hear his booming bass voice shouting encouragement and urging me to work less. I later came to regret not taking his advice! :x

The three of us who were working decided we had enough and jumped away from the bunch, riding through and off until we were caught by the leading group, I made the mistake of jumping on to the tail end and went away with them.

By this point the whole peloton was getting tired and every now and again I kept hearing the screech of carbon on tarmac as another three grand bike lost its rider. I reckon about 10 riders ended up sliding on the floor.

The lead group and myself caught what was left of the main bunch, and as we threaded our way through the back markers I lost contact. and then couldn't hold onto my 2 old companions as they came past me.

I finally made it to the finished 11th out of 45. It was an intense ride. I rode about 30-odd laps with three tight corners on each lap so I reckon I did about 90 sprints in an hour as we exited the corners! Now that's a work out!

I went up through Avonbridge today and came across the Pedal for Scotland run sprawled across the road not letting anything past.... I went up the road to Longrigg and thought the road discipline of some cyclists was P*** poor.I was waiting to turn right to head to Slamannan and there was one cyclist on a flat bar bike coming round the corner with no helmet and on his MOBILE PHONE just as a Police car had gone up the road in the opposite direction.....

Other than that it was a very good cycling day....

So that's what you look like when you're tired....I hardly recognised you. Good effort!
I did 40 odd miles with Yorkshire based friends on Saturday. The teacakes in Burnsall were particularly magnificent.

You may be interested to know that cyclepromotions have one of their one-day sales in Edinburgh on Sunday. Some of their stuff is very cheap.

    Alrighty!

Was good to me some of the guys last night.

    Looking forward to Sunday's run.

Any thoughts on where it might go or play by ear?

    Cheers,

    Grant
  • Yup, a good session last night - did Matt end up retaining all of his trophies? I got some feedback from another club this morning and I'll be mailing it on to Matt.

I left just after you so I don't know if the spoils were shared out at the end of the night or if Matt got them all to take home for the trophy cabinet :)

Good to see you all last night
I've got the trophies but when I got home Mrs OS 65 suggested they would look their best in the attic

Myself ,Stevie and Sparky are going over to Aberfoyle to do a reccy ride of the TOT hilly time trial route so we won't make the Saturday ride but there is a strong chance that we will make the Sunday outing.

If anyone else fancies joining us we should be leaving the Aberfoyle car park no later than 9.30 if your'e up for it.

  • How did the first-ever Sunday club run go?

    Good run,

Around 60 miles all-in. We went out to Fife via the Forth Bridge, up to Cowdenbeath then on to Cleish, Saline, Clackmannan, Kincardine and back to Linlithgow via Grangemouth.

Lovely day for it and all-in cycling around 4 hours with a nice pit-stop for scran and coffee halfway round!

Thanks to OS65 for giving me a help up one or two hills towards the end as my wee legs were finding it hard going!!
  • Sounds like a good day out. How many turned up?

About six of us. Robin took us on a really lovely route with a couple of climbs but nothing too demanding. Grantus impressed everyone on his single speed.
I won't be out this next weekend but I reckon there should be more people out

I won't be out either as I'll be down at Glentress on Saturday morning with the WLC extremist wing for some mountain biking
  • I am planning to come along both days but on Sunday I have to be back by early/mid-afternoon.

Mountain biking or roadie-ing on Saturday?
  • Proper cycling, of course.

I'd have to give my MTB a good cleaning before I can use it again. Perhaps later this year.

Talking about winter riding, anyone interested in cyclo cross? I've still got a pair of knobblies for my Jamis somewhere and wouldn't mind having another go.

You can also enter cyclo-cross on an MTB...
    OS 65
  • Yes, but you won't win. You are far too slow on a MTB.

Having said that, an ex-club mate of mine rides CC on a fixed MTB. Good workout but he's never won a race.

Try one, it's very, very tough.

I don't think I'd have much chance on a cyclo-cross bike either
I'm tempted to enter and have been thinking about it, need to get some spds though
