    Cheers Fathead!
You got the results before I did. It was a really nice event with a 40mph start. My time was 1min 30secs faster than the 10 I did in May so I'm happy with that. Bob did well too - his first TT and he did a 28.03, and that includes the time spent fixing his bike.
Its a good safe course, worth giving it a go - They have a another 10 there in two weeks

Any one do anything over the weekend? Anyone go on the saturday ride?

Well done Matt and Bob great result guys.

I led the pack of 6 on Saturday around a very challenging hilly 50 miler taking in the Bathgate Alps and the surrounding areas. Every hill was a virtual sprint race and every 30 was contested by the usual suspects, you know who you are?? My legs were shot after 45 miles and had to spin off easy on the way back. All in all a great day out in fantastic weather with good crack. Stevie suffered for the first 25 miles due to his back brake being slightly jammed then after that he was off like a rocket !!! Tobias has vowed never to stay off his bike for 4 weeks ever again as he nearly died due to the pace.

I will be out at Pedal Power tomorow night and hopefully see you there.

    Rgds, Bill

It was Mark from Pumpherston and the other Mark from Linlithgow nad not forgetting Malcolm who was riding that strange bike that overtook me and Stevie on a downhill section whilst we were pedalling flat out !!!!!!! I think we will get him in for a dope test next week

Cool, Not been out with those guys, Did they say how they found out about the ride?

I reckon we should make Malcolm team 'doctor'

How did his 'Ratho Mix' effect Stevie the other week when he took a swig from the 'doctor's' bidon?

    Matt,

One of the Mike's is a Geordie and he has been out with us once before but intends to do it more often. The other Mike has been out with us a few times but not sure if he has joined up, maybe ask him next time if he wants to be a gang memeber??

I think the swig from the chalice that Stevie took set him up well for the TTT so just as well the team were not called for any samples ????

Could be Mark's mate, it's an age thing !!

I am doing the 90 mile tour of Tweedale so will have to give the 10 a miss but could be interested in the 2 up TT however that works??

2 Up TT works a bit like the 4-up TTT but with half the team! but both riders have to finish. Its quite exhilarating if you get an evenly matched pair.

After a few enquiries, Bob Is going to coordinate a Sunday club run starting at 9.am and is wondering about a different starting point.

He is suggesting Linlithgow Leisure Center, Bathgate Leisure Center, The Bridge Inn or The Cross in Linlithgow. Any suggestions form you guys? Where do you think will be the best meeting point? We have members in from Livingston, Ratho and Whitburn but most members are from the East of the Bathgate Alpes. It would be good to get more people from the wider county.

Bob goes to Spin Class at Linlithgow and reckons some of the Spinners (not the 70's folk outfit!) will want to come out.

Linlithgow cross would be a good meeting point and ample local free parking if people do not want to cycle over. There is a good wee cafe there for a social after the event also.

I was speaking to Neil from the ERC and he said he would come out and favoured the cross.
  • Great run out on Saturday - need to download from my Garmin to workout where we went. Bill had us along roads with grass up the middle and chose a route which passed the maximum number of 30 signs possible. I'm riding 165 cranks at the moment and I though my knees were going to fuse at one point.

Sunday runs: good idea as longs as we're not trying to spread ourselves too thinly ust before the weather goes off. Preferred location: nowhere further west then Linlithgow if possible.

I've heard about that spin class. What night is it on?

Bill's right, the four-week break has put me back on square 1. So, I went out yesterday again doing about 60 miles. But I have to admit that my legs do feel a bit heavy today. I think its time to get the old turbo out again.

Anyway, any change of a lift for two people/bikes to and from Peebles on 7 September?

    Hey El
What do you think about a Sunday ride? Would you go on it where should it start?

Im on the turbo tonight for a steady 45 mins to spin the legs as mine are a bit sore today too. Can't help with the run to Tweedale as I have a full rack with Stevie's bike.

I am up for a run on Sunday's as well when I cannot make the Saturday.

    Bill
  • A Sunday ride is a good idea although I'm not sure I could come out every week without getting into trouble at home. Starting at the Cross is a very good idea, too; I'd probably need a longer warmup though - a two minute freewheel down the hill might not be sufficient.

In the longer term, we may also want to give a bit of thought to what to do with slower riders (even slower than me) who would like to give the Clarion a go. I am sure I could convince K. to come out ever now and again but certainly not at Bill's speed. Tricky one at this stage, I suppose, since we are still a very small club.

    Cheers,

    T.

PS I am thinking about trying the track on Friday. Are you going?

    Hey El
The Saturday run is usually a relaxed affair and the speed seems to be flexible so no one is left floundering. Sounds like you were all up for a bit of hard riding on Saturday

We could promote the sat ride more as a 'Rookie Run' through the autumn/winter, the best thing is to be flexible depending on who turns up.

The idea with the Sunday ride is to make a more conventional Sunday Club Run and decide whether or not that includes a cafe stop etc.

I'm suggesting the ride just because so many people have asked about it, and it could be an opportunity to go on longer runs

Not going to the track on Friday, I'm racing at the Clarion Track champs on Saturday...

  • Yeah, being old and overweight isn't much fun I've discovered. I was slogging up the hill trying to catch up with the others. But this time next year it'll be the other way round ...

I am all in favour of proper club runs that included tea stops, i.e. have the emphasis on social not training/performance. From what you say, I am not quite sure, which one will be the easy run, though - Saturday or Sunday?

Plus, if you start at the Cross at 9am, you'll run into the Lithgae Cycling Group bunch twice a month, which might be a bit confusing. Unless we join them/they us, of course.

Usually the runs on Saturday are a mix of training and social where we always wait at junctions and tops of climbs for the bunch so should suit everyone. We could make the Saturday a training day and the Sunday more of a social long distance with a cafe stop half way which would suit most levels.
I would be up for a long distance Sunday run once a month with the club memebers for a bit of a social. What about you guys?

    Bill
  • Hi Bill

    I'd go with your suggestion.

We have to be careful not to make the same mistake some other groups make - tell potentially interested cyclists that it will be an easy run and then do a 50 miler at high speed. I think we just have to let people know what to expect.

As for the social rides, if we agree on the stopping point in advance, the group could even be split into different groups on the day (slow/fast/short/long ride) if necessary.

    >Bill's right, the four-week break has put me back on square 1.

    Talking of square one....
I'd actually managed some good shower dodging through August and was going relatively well.....until I went down with a cold bug on Friday
I had been thinking of entering the ToT which is less than two weeks off. Anyone got any experience of how long post-viral crapiness affects your cycling? Is aiming for Peebles wise/realistic? <sniff>

    >Anyway, any change of a lift for two people/bikes to and from Peebles on 7 September?

If I DO enter I could offer spaces for up to three passengers but only one extra bike.

    Foz,

You should be ok with the ToT just take it easy and do the shorter route as it's all about taking part and not how fast you can go, AYE RIGHT !!!!!

Hope your cold gets better and as long as it is in your head and not your chest you should recover relatively quickly.

go for lithgow as the meeting place, it's close for everyone
  • Hi Foz

I am sure, you'll be fine. Two weeks should be enough to recover.

Two people and one bike would still be ok and a lift much appreciated.

If you could just let me know early next week whether or not you are going; this would give me enough time to make other arrangements if you decide to give it a miss.

    Cheers,

    Afternoon All

Linlithgow would be an OK meeting point for me.

Could we not put a ride calendar on the WLC Blogspot http://westlothianclarion.blogspot.com/ ... arion.html and detail which route shall be ridden on which day,be it saturday or sunday. We could have a few different routes and meeting pionts listed, that would include speed and where the cake stop was. :)

Fat Head and I were talking to a rider last thursday at Linlithgow Bridge (didn't get his name but he rode an S-Works Roubaix?? and was from Linlithgow) and he was asking about a Sunday run.We said to keep an eye on this thread.

Anyone out at Pedal Power tonight?

    Mark.....

A Sunday morning ride would be good for me although it wouldn't be hard to beat the one time I've managed out on the Saturday morning run at the start of the summer

Saturday mornings are incresingly taken up by work at the minute :(

P.S. I finished at a meeting in Livingston yesterday at 4pm so decided to check out some of the famous Bathgate Alps as on my way back to Cumbernauld as I haven't been over any of these roads before and always thought "how steep can they really be?"

Famous last words, eh? The road from Bathgate to Dechmont then over to the canal at Linlithgow were pretty steep but the best thing was the surface of most of them. Can't wait to get out now. There were a couple of people out on road bikes enjoying the sum yesterday between 4 and 5-ish. Anyone on here?
