    Brian,

As it will be mine and Stevie's first time over 81 miles, Etape length, we will have to see how we feel on the day. Any help from yourself and FH on the day to keep us motivated will be helpful mate.

Did not receive my time yet but should get the pack on Monday. George came out with us on Saturday and we got a good steady 40 miler in around the usual roads, didn't want to do too much in prep for the SUS.

    Rgds, Bill

You and Stevie will be fine. I saw your times for the Etape and if you bring down the speed a tad and eat sensibly you guys will do it no probs and probably pass me. I will be keeping a eye out for Fathead coming past as I dont think a 22 min lead will see me past the first feedstation before him.

I eat like a madman before events with a huge breakfast and some food 30 mins before and then some more just as I start and eat regular all through the day and bulk up at feedstations. I only ate 2 bars and 1 gel for the whole Fred Whitton because I did not feel well in the heat and with my crash and suffered badly for it.

Last week i ate roughly 10,000 claories during the day and really felt good. Its the only time you can really stuff your face and get away with it.

Fagor, I'll look out for you! If we are one of the last groups to go that's not so good as its always nice to have big trains pass you by which you can join on to.

I did the pedal power run tonight and am totally wrecked, I've done 175 miles since Friday so I'm not going near a bike till Sunday. Going to try to eat plenty and quality over the next few days too.

Cheers Brian, carbed to the max today and the mrs bought me a crackin assos 6 days jersey set for my birthday, which is in August but she is allowing me to wear it tomorrow
Anyway all the best to everyone tomorrow, I will be on my white R3 complete with white and black 6 days gear looking like a ponce but who cares.

    See you tomorrow.

    Bill
  • BrianB - I'll keep my eyes peeled for a very tall bloke on a Storck. I'll be riding a white Giant TCR and wearing a silly Primal tuxedo-style top.

Have only ridden 58 miles in the last two weeks, which isn't very good, lol. Also, foolishly undertook a self-induced deep tissue massage this afternoon, and now my legs are killing me!

Did you do the Polka Dot last year Captain and if so did you wear that top? A few guys heard my accent and wondered if any of my mates had a Tuxedo top with funny arm(tatoos if memory is right) warmers. It may have been you they were talking about.

Yup, that was me! I've packed the tattoo arm warmers as well. Hopefully I'll see you tomorrow at some point.

Bit of a pisser about the getting-up-at-the-crack-of-dawn lark though. Off for an early night.
  • Hope you all you SUS-ers got on okay today. Don't know my exact time, but somewhere just under 6hrs. Quite pleased by that, but it seemed awfully hard work! Lowther was a real struggle!

BrianB - I briefly saw you when you were roadside having "a gentleman's rest" shortly before the second feed. Didn't see anyone else of this forum, though (I don't think).

Good time Captain. I met Fathead at the 2nd feed station where I was trying to get rid of my cramps. Bill - How did you and Stevie get on?

I snapped a spoke just before wanlockhead and had to walk a bit to the finish line. I think I lost about 20-30 min(and a fair bit of skin of my feet) but still got for about 6hrs40min. I averaged about 20mph for the first 3hrs and then died on the road to Moffat at grey mares tail in that headwind and suffered really bad cramps. Pity about that spoke as I got a 2nd wind around elvanfoot.

What a weird sportive - no real hills apart from the Dalveen and Devils beeftub for about 50 miles and they were grinds which I got up in big gears. A well run sportive though and a good day out.

  • Hi Brian. No luck with the spokes - what type of wheels are they? I shouted your name when I passed you roadside, but I don't know if you heard or not. I stopped briefly at the feedstation, so I couldn't have missed yourself and Fathead by much.

Fathead - you were supposed to be in the same starting group as me - I was wearing my Primal Tuxedo top, with tattoo arm warmers and riding a white Giant TCR. Was I riding with you at any point? What were you riding / wearing? Is this the Spanish Inquisition?

Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed your day!

Captain - I did not hear you or see your very noticeable top which I have seen advertised before so I know what i was looking out for. My wheels are Kysrium ES and for the last 2 years have been bombproof but they went so far out of true that it was hitting the seat and chain stays.

You could only have been 10 minutes or so in front of Fathead as I know where I stopped for a 'gentlesmans break' and I met Fathead at the next feed station.

I never suffer from cramps but I did yesterday - Big Time. I was glad I was in good company as everybody at the 2nd feedstation were the same. Great day out though!

Well done to all. Well what a day me and Stevie had, absolutely mental start and under 2 hours to the first feed which seemed crazy fast due to our group containing a certain Mr McGarrity from Dooleys. We stopped briefly and recharged with a few ham rolls and bananas filled the water bottles and off we went this time on our own working in a chain to keep the momentum going. When we hit the side of Talla reservoir we knew we had blown it as our speed at the start had been too high and now we were going to suffer on the climb. Thankfully it was short and sharp but sore all the same managed to churn up without getting out of the seat. We headed down the other side towards the road back to Moffat which seemed to drag on for ever and the head wind was now making us suffer for our earlier heroics. We arrived at the feed station feeling a little tired and weary not knowing what lay ahead, thank god for that !!! We spent too long getting our act together and ended up quite cold and stiff now, everything was hurting. We left the feed station alone and slogged our way back to the bottom of the radar climb. We stopped again just outside Leadhills for a stretch and 2 gels each in prep for the big boy. Once we reached it I took it steady and never got into my threshold so managed quite well and only got out the saddle once. Stevie was feeling it big time and nearly gave up but I encouraged him all the way and he crossed the line then fell on his back and died.
We had a total time of 6hrs 48 mins and stopped for a total of 28mins so considering it was our first ever 100+ we manged quite well but next time we will not get sucked into the flying start. A lesson well learned !!!
All in all a fantastic event, well organised and we met a great bunch of people on the day.

    Rgds, Bill

Fagor, not sure my group number but I think I left in the 0930 group which was the one I was supposed to be in...due to the queue to sign in I ended up just rushing down to the start about half 9ish and joining in the next group to go....I didnt see anyone matching the description you give...I was wearing a red short sleeve jersey and riding a nude carbon kuota karma....I rode with a group containing a few ERC riders till I got dropped near the top of the dalveen pass, then rode with the mcgarrity group from greenhillstairs before getting dropped on the devils beeftub.....ended up riding the final 30 miles on my tod which was a bit unexpected and unwelcome! 6hrs 8mins time

Was going to come out 2moro. I am instead going out at 6am as I have a busy day. I am going through to Edinburgh to get my wheel fixed then take kids to Caravan in Calander then I have to get on with a few home jobs that must be done before I move house.

I went out with George on Wednesday night to spin my legs after Sunday efforts and felt much better for it. I may see you guys as I am heading home.

Fathead - seeing BrianB's mention of the photographs I think I rode with you from Megget back to Moffat. I was the buffoon that had to carve you up a bit on the descent past the dam when the car appeared, and (hopefully) made up for things a bit by giving you my water when you had run out.

After Moffat when you left to buy water, I did a bit of a number grinding my way up to the feed, briefly filling up with water. I then pressed on with the Swiss Assos man on the Wilier and the guy in brown on the Litespeed Vortex (he was slipstreaming as usual) before they both hammered me on the big climb.

Captain, I just realised who you were from the pics, I didnt realise at the time that was a tux top you had on. Its funny how me and you chatted away for a while aint it? Thanks for the water, I stopped off in moffat as I knew we had a few miles to go up the beef tub to get to the feed and i didnt want to leave getting liquid in me any later. As for carving me up, I dont think I've ever been so scared of someone's safety on a bike than seeing you go head on with that carI was just grateful to see you get in on time. There were certainly a few hiding in the group we were in - nothing wrong with sitting at the back and getting a tow but folk should make that clear thats what they're doing rather than just lurking aboot!

    Saturday Ride
Bill, Stevie, Sparky, Fathead, and OS 65 rode out on a favourite route to South Queensferry, with a good blather and descent weather. OS and Bill tied with three 30 signs each but OS's bike was cleaner than Bill's so he takes the honours!
