On Monday 21st July Bill set a new club record. He completed the West Lothian Clarion P2P2P from the Knock to Blackness and back in 1hour 9 mins and 34 seconds.

Bill said "There was a very heavy westerly head wind and it made it quite tough on the return leg. It is a tough challenge and it is not as downhill as you think."

A great ride from Bill, its going to be a tough time to beat...how long will this record last? Over to you!

Here are the stats from Bill's Garmin:

Overall time: 1 hour 9 mins and 34 seconds
    Total ascent: 1426 feet
    Total descent: 1394 feet
Fastest speed: 44.3 mph on downhill of Kingscavil
    Max heart rate: 183 bpm
    Average heart rate: 159
Total Knock to Blackness time: 27 m 23 secs with average speed of 22.1 mph
Total Blackness to Knock time: 42 m 11 secs with average speed of 14.3 mph
Total calories burned: 1474 cals about the same as a big mac meal so well worth it!.

Yup, there's some fairly flat sections like from Mains, past the llama farm over to Ochiltree. Was there any data on the total distance? Certainly sounds like a gauntlet has been thrown down. I shall look forward to starting my carbo-loading efforts on Wednesday night - see you there.

I think my man is going to win  come on Sastre

Foz, the route does not go past the lama farm it takes a right at the top of kingscavil and continues towards linlithgow then up the climb past beecraigs to the linlthgow bathgate road either that or I have gone the wrong route !!!! but I think I went the right way according to os65.

We were out tonight and had a good wee run round the route then took the long way home via Avonbridge. George, Brian, myself Alla and Gary from pedal power. I had been out since 5 oclock and in total done about 45 odd miles making the most of the weather.

Wont be out Sat but I will be going out Sun at 8.30 if the weather is good and intend meeting Brian and George at the Black Beatch. If anyone is up for it we will see you then.

    Hey Bill
You've got the right route! That's the one I sent out and the one that's on bikely. There are fewer junctions that way. Ideally the start should be at blackness - its more romantic to start at sea level and I reckon that direction would produce faster times

I wonder if we should start a conventional regular Sunday club run that's longer than the Saturday one? I've been asked by a few people whether we do one. Its not something I could take part in but most established clubs have one.

Fewer junctions, more climbing......but I can see the logic. I should try to get on it soon to set a personal benchmark if not a club one!

Great ride this morning with Brian, George and Neil, about 50 miles with a 17.5mph average 3200ft climbing and a banana stop. Plenty of hill attacks and good efforts, really enjoyable ride with good company and everyone with the same fitness goal. Really enjoyed it.

See you all on Wednesday for the curry at the Ashman.

looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow for the curry....there is a very slight chance may have to go down south tomorrow but I think it will be easily avoided

did the pedal power run tonight....in desperate need for some time off the bike, starting from tomorrow I'm going to take a fortnight off as I've been doing things relentless this year....i'm off to spain on monday for 10 days and not taking the bike so this is a good time for some r and r and several cold cervezas!

    Hi

Got back from Paris on Monday having arrived there on Saturday - joining up with 400 other cyclists at the Arc de Triomphe to ride down the Champs Elysees was quite something and the traffic didn't get too stressed out about it either.

All in all 4 great days on the bike in a part of the world that I otherwise would never have considered cycling in. Even though there were some who were there for their n'th time, it's a one off for me and I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone who's thinking about it.

Can't see myself getting out this week but will attempt to get the folding over to Bill at some point (probably via OS65).

    Cheers
    Malcolm

Anyone up for the pedal power APR training night on Tuesday. The first group leaves the shop in West Calder at 6.30. It's a brilliant training session and the route is about 27 miles and quite lumpy !!!!

Myself, Stevie and Mark are going how about you????

I will not make thursday as it is my daughters birthday.

See you on Saturday at the KWM...

    Hi dulldave.

There is a training night on a thursday.
We meet at the Bridge Inn in Linlithgow Bridge at 6.30.

If you miss the start time just ride round the route in the opposite direction to catch up.

Start steady then build up, either APR, chain-gang or continental change.
There are shortcuts across the circuit for dropped riders to catch up

    Route: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/114980

Drink In the pub after the ride.

I don't know how to do all that roadie stuff. I'm just a mountain biker in disguise.

I tried that Blackness - Knock thingy this evening. I stopped trying at the Knock. It took me just under 53mins to get up there. That 1:09:30 time is pretty impressive stuff.

Oh bugger I went the wrong way. Same distance but I went down past the restaurant at Beecraigs. I wonder how much of a difference it made.

    Not 10 bloody minutes anyway!

    Hi Dave
It probably made 5 or more minutes difference! there's a steep hill coming out past beecraigs centre

And if you are on an MTB that could easily add 15 minutes to your time especially if your bike has got suspension.
As well as the Thursday ride we all meet up at at 8.am every Saturday at the Korean War Memorial between Linlithgow and Bathgate (just near the Torphichen turn off.

Its a social ride and no one gets left behind average speed 15-16mph

    why not try it out?

I know about that ride thanks. Sadiq told me about it when I was mountainbiking with him at Beecraigs. It's just really early. How long do you ride for?

I'm going to Glentress tomorrow. Perhaps I could fit both in?

I have a road bike and a mountain bike. I'd have been pretty impressed with that time if it had been on my mtb.

I noticed I took another wrong turning. I went up that hill by the Binns too.

    Must try again.

    Dave,

We start at 8am on Saturday at the KWM but we all have mountain bikes and it is our intention on bad weather days to head down to Glentress on a Saturday to start at around 9am from the bottom car park to do the red route. If the weather for tomorrow is rubbish I will be going to GT instead of going out on the road ride.

    Maybe see you there.

Maybe you'll be coming in as I'm heading out. 9am is a bit keen for me unless its winter.

Is the Knock road open then? Passed it this morning and there was a yellow sign up suggesting it was closed.

    Dave,

I have a grey "Orange 5" so if I see you I will give you the nod mate.

    Foz,

The road is open to the point that you need to cycle to to complete the challenge so crack on mate.

Bill - when shall we get together to train for the TTT?
