did anyone hear the chopping sound blowing in on the wind last night? that was me getting slaughtered at ingliston - AGAIN!
i lost the bunch early doors and ended up coming home in the first chasing group.......the wind made some sections of the circuit extremely tough. it was curtains once a few metres gets between you and the bunch. next thursday evening crit is in a fortnight (there may be one there on sat i think).
off to the lakes this weekend for fred whitton pracice so have a good weekend if you're out0 -
FH-you gotta be in it to win it so top job digging in at the crit and getting finishes posted.. Me and Mark were getting a hammering of the wind last night but hey ho. Will see whoever on Saturday, to the Lakes bound roadies all the best, and would like to give that a go soon. The Trek is like a feather bed compared to the Massi....I have been spoilt..am sure that will get knocked out of me though soon enuff..lol. Peace. JMC0

we had a fanatastic day in the lakes, taking on a 60 odd miler with much much steepness....the undoubted moment to remember was hitting hardnott after 40 odd miles into a raging headwind....i came on to the pass 30secs behind everyone haven taken a pee and this was the perfect vantage point to see the carnage taking place, everyone fighting for their lives! i was behind this veteran who took on the ride with a lowest gear of 39x27  and i dont think ive met a harder rider....it took him being blown off his bike at the top to get him off it....after descending hardnott we ploughed away into the gale at about 6mph for more madness on wrynose, which is okish till a final, steep ramp demands maximum effort......what a day0
-
Yes it was a great a great day in the Lakes. You were very capable on Hardknott Fathead. It was one of my hardest climbs ever - the amount of upper body strength just to keep my front wheel straight in that wind. Worth it though at the top.
Quite a tough dayfor 60 miles. Good bunch of lads though and well up for a challenge.Brian B.0 -
Yeah, we pick the days...a bloody Easterly gale and we were finishing off with Hardknott and Wrynose West
Non stop steep insanity...heres my account whic I entered into another Forum:-
8 of us gathered at Grasmere...we set off at 8.45am...it was blowing a Easterly Gale, and this was bad for what we bagged on this route...onto the A591 and into Ambleside..then left turn at mini roundabout, yes we were going upto Kirkstone via the terribly difficult 'Struggle', big long sapping steep brute, wave after wave of 20%, until a flattening, then the wind took its toll, seems good to hit a levelling until you see what awaits...a big twisty lump of 25% right upto the Inn..that set the tone for the day...hard hard climbs rapid one after another, we descended off this via the FWC Holbeck Lane - Out to Clappersgate and onto small lovely roads upto the Drunken Duck..we then detoured off Hawkshead for the road upto Tarn Hows...lovely but very dangerous descent...then off through Coniston and out to Torver for that steep bugger up over to Broughton Mills....then straight up from there via the long and steepish sapper of Stickle Pike...terribly windy descent into Ulpha then immediately onto the 25% Birker Fell..great descent off this..then we were at the King George Pub...we took a right...went passed a big 30% sign...the pace dropped, the talking stopped..yes we were heading for pain central..the one and only Hardashell Pass...looked up and seen the sight in brilliant visibility..."oh my god, here I am again" was my thinking...nowt for it...hit the slopes..carnage..it immediatley took victims...one guy simply hopped off and prepared for a steep stroll...another lad had severe cramps..2 lads got blown clean off there bikes...yes this is one of those ultimate trials...one of the toughest climbs ever directly into a Gale force headwind...nice! Anyhow I managed to struggle and square pedal myself up the thing once again...just as I was getting over that last brutal ramp to the top the wind near carried me off the bike...jesus it was scary...I had to sit down there to keep the bike on the road...and then my wheel started to lift....however I managed to scramble my way to the top and then hid with the other lads behind a big rock up there...we then Kamikazed off that and went through 'hell on earth' along Wrynose Bottom....the wind up there was staggering...I was in 30x21 just trying to get forward motion on the flatter sections...then onto Wrynose...I'm starting to really dislike this climb, it never used to bother me much but in last years Fred and on this occasion it was a sore haul...straight off this down to Fell Foot, but the climbing was not over...we dinked left and headed over Blea Tarn...maybe a section of 25% here but it was a skoosh after the big boys...then still not finished...we took a wee left at Chapel Stile and took the climb over Red Bank back to Grasmere...this climb caused a few frowns...anyhow back safe in Grasmere.
61 miles of the most brutal terrain known to man or beast...usually after scaling Hardknott again(especially into a Gale) you would think my confidence would be lifted? Well its not...all that did was re-iterate to me how bloody hard and awful it really is again..cant beleive i'm gonna do it at 100miles again in 3 weeks time.0 -
down to earth today to make the pedal power run, APR style format, me and three others managed to break and stay away from the fast boys who had us in our sights....28 miles over lumpy terrain and terrible road surfaces at an average speed of over 20mph....a very good training run and recommended for fitness
i'm hoping to get a 100 mile ride in between now and the fred whitton....finding it difficult thinking of anywhere suitably flat
meant to say, some quips from our friends in the lakes on saturday who are always worth a decent one liner or three....one that springs to mind now was stu's response to richyboy when gleefully commenting on the fact that he was staying at stu's the night before the fred, saying that he would be sleeping with stuarts wife....someone's got to was the response from stu.0 -
Great ride Fathead, now you're motoring! The Lakes ride sounds like a monster endeavour. I've not had much time so I've been on the turbo. I've entered the May day Gallup APR ride organised by Falkirk on May5th. Anyone else fancy it?
I'll be at the Bridge in for 6.30 for the training night.
OS 650 -
Hi troops, wont be at the bridge tonite, am at a "gig" as I think it is known!!!!!. Will see you on Saturday, or if any of you fancy a run out on Friday evening give me a shout. JMC0
-
was at work till later tonight so didnt manage to get out, but got text from os65 saying there was three out including a new face, sounded a good run
i'm planning on camping somewhere yet undecided with my daughter tomorrow night so if all goes to plan i wont be out saturday.....i'm planning on riding sunday, theres a 100 miler planned by a glasgow club i know and i wouldnt mind doing that to get a long ride in the legs before the fred whitton....starting at 9am just north of glasgow, if anyone fancies this get in touch0 -
Won't be out on your 100 miler so have a good camp and ride Fathead
Three of us out for the training night, myself, Mark and new guy Ian. Ian's a triathlete and a bit nippy! Found out about us from Pedal Power (thanks: www.pedalpower.org.uk/). Managed 4 laps before the Bridge Inn started her siren call but we could easily get up to 5.
Did a bit of through-and-off and some APR with hill sprints up the climb out of Madiston. My legs were screaming with pain as Ian kicked and just rode away to the top!
Mark was hoofing around the bends after Muiravonside and only slowed because his bike was giving him jip.
A top evening's ride finished off in the pub
See you at the Korean War Memorial, 8.00 on Saturday
OS 650 -
Anyone brave it yesterday? Woke up to the sound of the wind driving the rain against my bedroom window. Chapeau! (or get some marriage guidance counselling) to anyone who went out in that.================================
Cake is just weakness entering the body0 -

didnt go camping because of the rubbish weather, so ended up going in to work on saturday....as for today, saw the good weather forecast and decided to give the 100 miler a miss to take the family to callender for a jaunt on MTBs along the very scenic national cycle network to strathyre and back....had to bribe my daughter with the promise of a fish supper all to herself in callender after the ride....worked a treat! our dog came too, running along side us all the way - i'm expecting her to sleep for the next three days. turned out a glorious day.
weather looks rubbish all this week but still planning a 100 miler before the fred which is two weeks today0
