  • Hi to you all,

As the user name better describes who I am...... Would some kind person help me out please advise on type of byke I should purchase for a new beginner etc etc. The main reason I am here and seeking all the help you can supply is..... I would like to register with Action Aid and cycle to London to Paris June next year. As much as the obvious I will need to go and check up on my fitness at doc's etc. I no doublt will have to begin slowly and eventually be fit enough to go on longer rides. So are there any beginners on here to give me the ropes or handles lol. Looking forward to hearing from someone soon.

    Cheers Bren

    Evening Gents

Just back from a week down south working with no computer access,so apoligies for not letting you know i would not be out on thursday past.
I will unfortunately not be out saturday due to my childrens social lives !! :(

My wife is most disapointed I shall not be there for the photos,as it was an excuse for her to get the wax out. :)

Hope you have a good run.

    Hi guys,

I would be quite interested in joining one of your Saturday runs.

I stay in Condorrat so would have a bit of a trek to get there. Takes me about 40-ish minutes to get to Slamannan from my house.

How much further, distance-wise, is it from Slamannan to the War Memorial?

Also, I'm firstly a mountain-biker and am just getting into road cycling. I've got a basic Sora equipped roadbike but feel it's a tad under-geared for me. Easiest gear I've got is 39x26. This is not quite enough to get me up Tak Ma Doon as I'm used to doing it on my mountain bike in the granny ring. How do the hills you ride over compare with the Tak, just to give me an idea of what I'm letting myself in for?!?

    Thanks,

    Grant

    Hi Grant
Thanks for the interest. Its about 30-40 minutes from Slamannan to KWM so its a fair old way to the start of our ride for you. We could meet you at Slamannan or thereabouts. One guy drives to the start from Livingston and one member comes up from Ratho on a bike.

The Saturday ride is a social ride that requires a reasonable amount of fitness but no one gets left behind, we wait at the top of hills and after the obligatory 30mph sign sprint. Riders who come out find they get fitter!

We don't have any hills as long as the Tak, but we'll usually take in one or two challenging lumps. Let us know if you want to come out and we can take in a route over your part of the world

    Cheers

    Hi OS65,

Many thanks for the offer. I think I'd quite like to take you up on that. I'd be happy to meet you somewhere like Avonbridge perhaps? That would take me an hour or so. I would be glad of the warm up to be honest if I am going to join one of your 30 to 40 milers! then I could pootle home at my leisure - it's all downhill from Slamannan ! albeit normally into a prevailing wind :x

As long as that doesn't put any of your chaps out of their way then i'd be really keen to get dragged along in someone's slipstream

I also have an mtb'er buddy in Polmont who used to do road biking years ago but gave up - I'm always trying to talk him into it to get some company on the road so if he knows there's a local ride then he might be tempted also!

Thanks for the replies guys - look forward to tagging along

    Cheers,

    Grant

    Hi Grant
Let me know if you want to try out this Saturday, I reckon we could meet up 8.30 in Avonbridge and then ride around towards Condorrat.

We've got a member who rides up from Polmont so your buddy wouldn't be alone...

    Hi OS65,

Saturday at 8.30 in Avonbridge sounds good. Can you suggest a suitable meeting point in Avonbridge as I don't really know it other than having passed through it a few times.

Re. heading out towards Condorrat - I'm more than happy to go with the flow and follow you guys around Falkirk/West Lothian rather than drag you away out - especially if you've got a boy from Ratho who cycles in to met you!

    Look forward to it!

There's a grocery shop in the middle of Avonbridge on the corner where the B825 (the road you'll be riding on) meets the B8028 (the road we'll be riding on)
So lets say there at 8.30am(ish)

Wouldn't worry about that - getting to the KWM from Ratho at 8 requires an unlikely combination of weather and insomnia to get me out so my attendance is sporadic to say the least. We're into Sportive season too which will knock me out for the next 3 weekends.

Speaking of which, I've just noticed that Bill and Stevie are in for the decaf version of the Skye sportive: whose wheel am I going to suck for the last 50?

    Enjoy the run on Saturday!

Friends, I was working last Saturday and, as things stand, have commitments for this coming Saturday which may mean I will be out of the area but if I am about I will be there! Avonbridge is a nice meeting point btw, would be good to have you come along Grant.

Will be out tomorrow night providing I get back from Glasgow in time, I will take my bike to work so I can head straight there without the need to come home first.

    Greetings all

I thought it is time to join you.

Anyone going out tonight? I don't want to drag myself out, face rain and wind only to find nobody else has turned up again.

    Cheers,

EC aka Tobias (happy to be addressed as Tobias)

Since the weather was so nice, I didn't have an excuse not to go out and guess how many keen WLC members turned up? Nil. Zero. Null.

So I went for a 2h ride on me own and came acoss the Falkirk bunch out on an evening ride. There were at least 15 - 20 of them.

Can't make tomorrow because I have to go to Newcastle and probably can't make next week either. Thursday perhaps.

I'll give the track a go but not today. Give me a week or two.

I'll be out tomorrow - 8.am KWM and then heading over to Avon Bridge to meet up with Grant

I've got my track bike in my office in Edinburgh, all ready to go but I'm not sure if the weather is going to hold off...wait! wait, the sun is coming out woohoo...

Thursday night has lost momentum a bit... riders were keen to get it up and running but attendance is low, got any ideas on how to make it work better? Wrong night? Wrong time? Worried a few pints might ruin the training! :)

Hm, as already discussed, I feel that half six is a bit early. 7pm might be better.

And I am not sure whether the location puts someriders off. It's very handy for me (and you) but might be a bit far for Mark and co. Perhaps we could rotate and start one week in Lithgae and the next in, say, Bathgate. But then we would have to start later to give me enough time to get over there.

I thought having a pint is a rather splendid idea. Teambuidling and all that.

i'll meet you guys at avonbride tomorrow at 0830....a nice meeting point for me as you avoid bathgate town centre and the big hill up from the sports centre! the only thing worse than cycling up that is cycling up it with epo-aholic - he has you blowing out your sphincter before the training run has officially began

Just got back from the beginner night at Meadowbank. The place has got a special atmosphere, I've seen pictures of Obree breaking the Scottish hour record there and it was wonderful to be trackside and then ride on it too.

After a quick explanation of how to ride the track I started off tentatively. I rode 10 laps at about 23mph, slowly getting a feel for the different riding style and moving higher up the track, Another 10 laps and I was above the blue line in the centre.

A youngster was doing some sprint training - swooping down from the banking - so I persuaded myself to go higher and did 5 sprint laps at 30mph. I rode on the rivet and could feel the g-force pushing me into the banking. Finally I rode around at the top of the track which was a bit nerve racking at first, my cranks are a little long so I was worried they might hit the track at slower speeds.

All in I did about 17 miles and hope to go again next Friday. If you get there at 6.30 with your pedals and a helmet they can sort you out with a bike so that you can be on the track for 7pm. And the cost? just 4 quid!

    See you at the KWM
