Idly browsing I found this thread on Richmaond Park. Nostalgia! I used to use it for training when I lived in wandsworth 30 odd years ago. After the gates had closed it was ideal - never had any trouble with deer. Looking back in my diary the only record I have for 3 laps is 61mins Apr 1972 [I usually did 4]. Those doing 50 something must be fit and as for Shavedlegs... Mind you, I was on a steel frame and only had 10 gears.

Shavedlegs, I put it to you that your real name is Bradley Wiggins. [:D]

I think a fourth category needs to be added to Toks's first post:

"4. Less than 50 min - visible only as a blur; almost X-Men-type ability."
    FCN 2-4.

"What happens when the hammer goes down, kids?"
    "It stays down, Daddy."
    "Exactly."

    Flattering comments. Than you.

Congratulations CJ and Grazer on your new babies. Looks like we can continue this thread for another generation.

I've noticed some people have improved by almost 5 minutes since the start of this thread which I find remarkable. All those people hovering around the hour can take heart.

May try and get to the park on Sunday morning. I'm thinking of having a go clockwise, or testing some aerobars if I get to the shops today.

Ok, first attempt this morning. Was riding fixed 48:18 - I'd like to think I'd have been a bit faster had I been on gears, but will have to wait until the road bike is built before finding out!

    Summer route
  • Did a 54.66 today, just too bloomin windy. Cant wait for a calm day, reckon I can knock a minute off my time and move up a spot or two. :P

Reckon the new Garmin has improved my time, seems the polar was not calibrated properly. On that note, what devices are people using to measure their times?

I'm using a polar and an Ergomo. The ergomos handy as it gives loads of info. Lap time, normalised power, gradient etc.

These times are all getting serious! I finally have my new lightweight geared bike but a monster crash at the weekend means a crazed attempt to climb the leaderboard is off the cards for at least another week or so.

Still, this thread has been a superb training inspiration, turning most RP trips into a personal TT. If in a couple of weeks' time I finish the Marmotte a happy cyclist it'll be in no small measure due to the encouragement of Toks, Ollie and the rest of you.

Yeah, it's been a lot of fun this year. Will be interesting to see what times we all end up with. I reckon we should wrap it up and review on the last official day of summer which apparently is Sunday October 28.

Yep, I slung my Ti beauty down the road at 50kph on her first outing. Not a clever move. Fortunately only the front wheel was totalled, so she's ready to roll again now as soon as I am...

My first go on Saturday - I meant to do it before but forgot to set the timer when I entered the park - and managed 66 mins dead. Doing Audaxes this year has given me stamina but not speed, so now I have qualified for PBP and don't have to plod along to complete any crazy distances for a few weeks, I want to up my speed.

I think a target of under 60 mins by late July is do-able, especially as I lost a couple of minutes putting on and taking off waterproofs, getting stuck behind cars etc.

Gave the 3 laps a proper, timed go for the first time last night. Really inspiring to have a leaderboard to aim at. New entry at no. 25.

Well done BearJ its great to know that four months down the line this thread is still carrot-sticking people into riding their bikes faster - even if you did have to go back into the future to complete your ride[:D]

My first go, shuffling in quietly at the bottom of the table:

Laertes, fitness, Anti, 95Kg, 1:37:00, June

I have a whole range of excuses, not least being that this wass the first time I have cycled 21 miles and I am not fit! Also, I am on a hybrid, so really it is only the extra weight of the bike that is holding me back.[:D]

Full list of excuses available on application.

Went out at 10pm last night and didn't get wet! No wind either, which must have helped a lot. Lots of deer on the roads - 2 emergency stops required.

Top effort mate - it's not about the time (or the Bike, as Armstrong would have it), it's about getting out there and having a go.

A couple more attempts and you'll be breathing down urrrrrrrrrs' neck!

    Either:
    a) no-one's been out to RP for a couple of weeks
    b) this forum doesn't work (in which case this probably won't post)
    c) everyone is a bit fed up and has gone somewhere else

if c), can someone let me know if this thread will be available somewhere else. I can understand why, it's just a pity as the old forum was good and these types of threads give a bit of motivation.

Off to RP tomorrow night, but not expecting to be too quick. Have been eating non stop since the London-Canterbury last week.
