Yea, I'm an anti-clockwise man. It would feel strange going clock. The headwind actually wasn't so bad for my first lap, it seemed to pick up. I'm disappointed to have not broken the hour mark...another day.0

GreenLake - go clockwise every so often. The steeper hill up from Robn Hood Gate will build strength in your legs and should make you a bit faster going anti-c and give it some stick on the approach to it from the roundabout.

Pretty happy given how new I am to this cycling lark - i used to swim a lot so my fitness is ok, but my legs are a bit weedy. Reckon this almost justifies my purchase of a carbon bike thats way way too good for a newby
I also had a 7 mile ride to the park which i took fairly quick, so I reckon I should be able to crack the hour with a bit of effort....

Talking of minutes/hours - just reading Mark Hutchinson's book about the hour record called 'The Hour" - absolutely brilliant read. Writes exceptionally well (ex academic, very funny)
just back after hols, during which I travelled up the list temorarily in error - so back out this evening to try to improve placing 'the harder way'.....0 -
Phew - just got back beautiful evening, little wind, so I improved by 3 minutes! I think I may have gone up a kilo given all that Croatian beer I drank over the last two weeks. Roght - I am REALLY going to try to get this down now. And the meet up in september is a v.g. idea....

Righto. No worries you skinny bugger I think showing weight is still very helpful - it incentivises me anyway. But yes I agree we should add experience - I got bitten by the road bug in June after doing the L2B, was doing fatboy slow MTBing before then.
definitely on to see who can break 1.05 first!

Took over 20 mins on the second lap, a good chunk of which was spent weighing up the chances of my dinner making a reappearance.
How long do people leave after eating before exercise? Two hours obviously isn't enough for me.

Only the third time I've been under the hour in my 8 years of Richmond Park cycling.
Best ever single lap 19.05min.
As I get older I find I can't go as fast for a single lap, but can go for more laps at a decent speed. It probably doesn't help that the only cycling I do these days is round the Park at the weekend.
Any handicap allowance for the aged? (just turned 48 and feeling it)

Hi Andy
I'd guess that age is a stronger influence on 3lap RP times than rider weight. I did a statistical regression which showed there was only a very slight relation of weight to these times. It would be far better to publish age on the RP and BH rider times.
Most cycling/athletic events - apart from key competitiobn events - have age related categories for results.0 -

Belated (post-holiday) thanks to CJ for the 'good luck with the move' shout. I'm temporarily back in London, between houses and with all but my fixed-gear bike in a storage depot in Hull, which feels mightily insecure. Had a first trip for a while to RP on Monday, failed to crack any personal bests and completely bonked by the end of lap 3 having been comprehensively out-descended by a Sigma Sport chap running a fixed gear 10 inches smaller than mine. I didn't know it was physically possible for legs to go round so fast!
Was also overtaken by another Sigma Sport geezer in a skinsuit doing some utterly unfeasible speed. That's what I like about RP -- there's always something to keep you motivated...0 -
Hello all,
Not done this challenge yet but likely to in the near future - to do a reccy for the London Duathlon, which takes place in the park on Sunday Sept 9th. Is anyone else doing this?
I've never cycled in the park apart from trundling around the outside sandy track with my nephew. Looking at the course map, the (20k) ride section is in a clockwise direction - how severe is the climb at Broomfield Hill in this direction? Can I get round in my big chain ring? BTW we're talking old-school 6-speed gearing - so that would go down to 52-24.

Yep, you'll get up Broomfield Hill in the big ring with a bit of a grind. I can struggle up it on a 72 inch gear and according to a gear calculator I found lying around on the web you've got 58 inches with 52/24. I hope you have a good day in the duathlon!0
