Funny you should mention the iPod, Ollie. It's something I've not done before but I spent an agreeable hour yesterday evening compiling an RP-specific playlist in advance of today's planned 5+lapper : Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, bit of disco... anything that might inspire a decent cadence. Be interesting to see whether it makes a difference!
There's probably a whole 'nother thread there on which tunes get you round the park fastest, but I won't start it now...

Yeah I reckon it can give you a boost sometimes - think there was an article in C Weekly a few issues back weighing up the pros and cons too. Have to admit I like listening on my commute as well. Don't forget you need to be extra vigilant though!0 -

I managed to knock off over 30 secs last night, after a hearty meal of pasta and energy drinks (red bull)!! bouncing off the walls a bit too!!,
and my new full shimano 10 speed 105 set up really helped too, best money ive ever spent so far this year.
Now my legs are killing me today and ive got to work a double shift today!!

A windy night - not sure whether it helped or hindered, but I've lopped off more than a minute and a half from my last attempt about six weeks ago.

ex-Virgin Etapper - www.clicktastic.com0 -
The new baby hasn't arrived yet, so I may be able to sneak to the park this Sunday. I should be there around 9am, anyone else going? It would be nice to meet some of you for tea after my run.
My kit is blue and white and I ride a Serotta should anyone see me.

They come in handy, I find overtaking them and keeping them behind you for 3 laps is good motivation for a few fast ones.

As an aside to 'music while you work' - I have an idea that Fat Boy Slim 's 'Acid 8000' and similar would get riders moving to the beat... I started liking it after seeing the youtube video of <s>Louis</s> er Lance Armstrong climbing Alpe D'Huez. (and I'm a potential old fogey!)[8D]

Okay. Apologies, but someone was going to do it, and like I said it is my last ride for while.
Beat my time by just 6 seconds but it felt a little like Roger Banniser and the 4 minute mile.

Well done Geetee on turning 3rd Cat sounds like you'll be 2nd Cat in a matter of weeks!
www.blog.shavedlegs.co.uk0 -
Oh my gosh Shavedlegs you're a cycling animal!...Well done everyone keep plugging away. I shamefully have to admit that despite 4/5 attempts I haven't been able to improve on my 57mins till this morning. A bit dasapponting really considering I did a 52min+ last year. Not just that. Unlike most of you I've actually gained weight rather than lost it [:I](4 kilos) which I must shake off before the Etape. Oh and with various Cyclosportiv challenges coming up I completed 10 laps this morning (five in each direction, which worked out as roughly 20 minutes per lap). Take care

The Merckx Diaries On my penultimate lap I took turns with the only cyclist I know that's been lapped in a race by a young Lance Armstrong.0 -
Wow Shavedlegs, that is brilliant. Funny, I was just going to ask if anyone thought sub 50 was do-able. I think we need some more info - what time of day was it? Reckon you can beat it? What cat are you? What did you have on your cornflakes?!
Good to see a few people having a go this weekend, and what lovely weather it was too. I managed to get a bit off myself late on Saturday - 53.25 which I think moves me up a few places - will post the list tomorrow.0 -

I managed to get a bit off myself late on Saturday - 53.25 which I think moves me up a few places - will post the list tomorrow.
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">Wow! fantastic effort Ollie. I've got to try and break into that top six as soon as poss
The Merckx Diaries On my penultimate lap I took turns with the only cyclist I know that's been lapped in a race by a young Lance Armstrong.0 -
I started my run at 9am, ate muesli for breakfast and drank some PSP22 on the way to the park. I ride from Balham which is my warm up.
I really didn't feel like it, legs felt heavy etc. but I knew it was last trip to the park for a while and the 50 minute barrier haunted me after being only 4 seconds over last time when I was held up by a Fiat Punto!
Training wise, I commute on a fixed (42/15 normally but just increased to 48/15). It takes about 35 mins and I try and stay above 25mph, with traffic lights and cars there is a a lot of stopping and starting. I have no idea for how long I could maintain the 25mph pace the traffic lights can provide very welcome rests. I do 50 push-ups and 50 sit ups in the morning too for core strength.
The ride wasn't perfect, I was held up by cars a few times which would have cost me a few seconds. Starting earlier would be better.
I'm a 3rd Cat. I only manage to get to a few races a year so mathematically it is almost impossible for me to move up to 2nd Cat. It is a bug bear as I'd like to think I could make it with a few more attempts, Crystal Palace races would be ideal for me but a combination of sometimes working the late shift and a tired pregnant wife have prevented me every week.
The game plan I use is to make sure I do the first lap well under 17mins, hope to relax and keep the pace up on the 2nd lap and know the 3rd is the last lap and I can rest soon.
There is always someone faster so I'd like to think one day I'll beat the time myself. Getting under the hour was an ambition not so long ago, I remember being scared that was a fluke. In some ways I'm scared to try again as I'll no doubt be slower and dissappointed. The next mile stone is a sub 16 minute lap but that is some way off.
I could try aerobars or aero wheels to shave the time down a bit, maybe an ipod! But there are all purchases to be made sometime in the future. Any opinions on wheels would be appreciated.
Great to see everyone improving.

I've managed a 17:30 min lap once before but just cannot keep that speed up for 3 laps. I'm going to try earlier in the morning next weekend as the traffic held me up a bit on sunday.

Ta for the info - coincidentally quite a few parallels with my own situation: I too live in Balham, have a young nipper to fit my riding round, commute fixed and often feel my RP times are a fluke. I'm just not as quick though!0 -
Naked Ollie, I just noticed you are listed as a fitness rider, surely you should try racing with your times. Family life permitting of course.
Thinking a bit more and considering everyone is probably based in South London. Shavedlegs is a BCF registered club (created as part of a business that never got off the ground.) It has occured to me we could create quite a team, target a few local races such as Crystal Palace, Hillingdon and MOD Chertsey. Working together could tot up a few points. Meet adhoc in the Park at weekends etc
It is late and I've drnk a bit so probably shouldn't be posting.

Well here is my effort. Nice day, not too hot, not much wind or much traffic
the jackal---fitness---anti---75kgs---60.57---June
I'm pretty happy with that considering I have only been riding for the past 2 weeks following an 8 month knee injury. Hoping to get some miles in over the next few weeks and break the 20mph ave and 60 minute markhttps://www.bikeauthority.cc/

Yeah I wouldn't mind having a go at racing - guess it would give a bit more interest to just training for 'fun'. But yeah, family first at the moment really, so it's unlkely I'd be able to get as immersed as I'd like. I'd defo be up for some training rides though - give us a shout if you're interested.0 -
