The Richmond Park, 2007, 3-Lap challenge!

Just managed to shave a mere 15 seconds off my PB, getting it down to 58:45 (anti). Contrary to what I thought earlier, the stiffish easterly wind seemed to help, mostly: today it was providing a hefty push up the Sawyers Hill drag, whilst not seeming to get in the way too much on the Kingston Gate-Robin Hood Gate section.
Did it on fixed again, too. I know there's not a column for gearing but I did feel good about it. Knackered afterwards, though. *Lord* knows how you chaps who race or do TTs manage to survive going at full tilt for long periods of time!0 -

What gear inches are you using mate? I've ridden a few fixed laps on the commuter but never tried a proper 3 lap effort. I think you're doing incredibly well time-wise!0 -
I'm using 48:18, which I think is 72". It helps that the bike (Pearson Touche) is light (about 8.5kgs) and reasonably stiff. I've never gone as fast when attempting the 3-lap challenge on my geared steel-framed audax bike, which is significantly heavier, so I guess that says something about weight and stiffness.
Or maybe it's just a question of form, who knows!
New summer road bike should be arriving soon, so hopefully I'll get a few more seconds off before long.0 -
Brixtonfixed - it wasn't you riding around with a speaker on your back last night playing dance music was it?0
-
I've not gone to such elaborate lengths in the search for speed yet... but it's a thought...!0
-
It works. I caught and over took him and he then slotted in behind me. I turned myself inside out to drop him as the music was awful - it sounded like the worst kind of Euro pop. [;)]0

That guy came out to Chertsey with us (London Dynamo). He kept up with us riding with the wind at 22 or 24mph, tunes playing, finally dropping off just after Weybridge. A bloody good effort on his part!0 -

Whatever the reason, I reckon you're flying. Those times are going to tumble when you get that new rig!0 -
first go this year, 58:40 , seemed to be windy in every direction - wtf - is that possible ? .. think i'll wait for a deep easterly next time.
Keep up the hard work folks - I remeber when I use to go round in 1hr 10, and when I broke the 1 hr I raised my arms as I crossed the roundabout at roehmpton gate and blew kisses to the imaginary crowd. Its a magical moment when the hard work pays off :-)

Have a small improvement on my time. Did 63.30 clockwise this evening.
Also not sure if allowed on this thread but last week i felt the need for a longer ride and did 6 laps anti in 134.170 -
Right...just back from attempt 2.....and I passed through the 1:10 barrier.....with a huge amount of pain... 1:09:32 Im most pleased with myself.0
-
Tried again tonight but got near enough the same time as last time. There was a stiff wind, so reckon my time will be well down when its calm.
"People setting the pace too fast on the front are abused to slow down. Riders that do not share the work are abused. Riders that need abuse get abused and the abuse is done in every language so they get the message"0 -
Okay, RP virgin here. I tried it a coupla weeks ago and managed 64mins going anti clockwise. More of a plodder than a racer, so thats good enough for me, though I hope to one day get below the hour and sit with the fit lads. The biggest challenge will be getting up early enough to avoid the traffic and thus get a clear run!!!0

Well done guys - 'twas a windy weekend at times. Here's final Bank Holiday classification:

What is the distance for each lap?0
-
Hooray! I just returned from a wet and wonderful morning at RP. 60.37! With a first lap at 19.44 I thought I could crack an hour, however, I'm very happy. Exactly 7 weeks ago I posted a 65.51. A 10% improvement makes me smile. And this is the kicker. My weigh was 92.5 after that ride. Today I'm 87.9. I've been doing my same commute (approx 111 miles per week) but have eaten less and better. I can now get my not-so-fat ass up the hills and keep up a bit of speed. I'm a very happy:

Glad to share it with you all...0 -
I have also just returned from RP with a new PB of 58.13 for three laps anti. Helped by what seemed like the first still morning of the year !!0

Well done Greenlake and Statts, I must be going backwards I've had two and half attempts since March and struggled to go under the hour. I must turn up on a headwind free non fatigued dayat and be my best time this year. I'm sure Ollie will come along and do some table rejigging soon [:)]

Anyone up for a (not so) formal race? I dunno...say Sunday 14 July? The sub hour crowd do a race at...hmmm...7:20am...over hour people start at 7:30am. We'd avoid traffic. Then off for breakfast. What do you think Toks? Is this inline with the spirit of this thread?0

<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">It would be great to meet up at some point in the summer, no probs Greenlake. On the 14th of July I'll be in France but I'm sure others will join you. There's informal racing type efforts going on all the time at RP the trick is to pretend you weren't really racing once you can't hack it[:D]. Just remember thru and off or racing leadouts are not true 3 lap challenges. Whatever you do take care
The Merckx Diaries "On the fourth lap the Lactate Threshold Party started and some extraordinary gentlemen took centre stage"0 -
Sounds like a plan -- as long as the emphasis is on 'informal' and 'breakfast'!0
-
We're on. Toks, anyone, feel free to suggest another time/date. If not I'll be there at 7 on the 14th. I agree that we should focus on the informal and breakfast bits...However, I must say I'm a bit tired of racing people while pretending not to race (although it is convenient as I often lose). Let's have some fun with it. Drafting strategy, trying to drop people, sprint at the end...0
-
Put me down as a tentative yes for the 14th - hopefully I'll be able to struggle out of bed.
Lets see what sort of intrest there is between now and then.0 -
wow had a good crack yesterday, had a tail wind most of the way round!! now im knackered!!

Really went for it tonight, and v. chuffed with 54:08 (anti).
Conditions perfect, no wind whatsoever. Started late (840ish) so no traffic either.
If anyone else goes for a late ride, watch out for the deer. They seem to like crossing the road a lot after the cars have gone!
(My ToR is triathlon by the way)0 -

Don't know if it helps, but I've started training for the British Cyclosportive by riding from Isle of Dogs to RP via Embankment, Putney Bridge, Lower Richmond Rd. Maybe you could join Embankment at Tower Bridge and go from there ?0 -
This sounds like a nice challenge. Looking forward to giving it a go on Sunday. Is there a set way to go round for this? Surely one way must be a different time to the other. Would like to make sure I'm doing it the same as all those that have put down their times. I'm looking to giving Halfords Wizzkid a run for his money. I'll let you know what time I made.0
-
Sorry, ignore my last message. I just realised I was reading this back to front and that I had 10 pages of newer messages in front of me - Doh, it's been a long week!. Seems like anti clockwise is the way to go then. I'll aim to go there this Sunday at 11 ish. I'll be riding round on my Time bike if anyone wishes to say hello!0
