Excellent commute home to Crich! Sawmills to Crich is indeed a killer hill, but what a great lpace to retreat to for the weekend eh? I often ride out through there from darkest Notts.
Anyway, my commute. 17 miles easy way from rural Nottinghamshire with the last 3 miles benig a battle for suvival and road space with innatentive or psychotic rush hour drivers.0 -
12.5m each way
newbie to the forum so hi everyone!0 -
11 miles each way in practice, Otley to Bradford and back on the direct A-roads route. However, the ride home is usually longer and/or hillier in order to get extra training in, and if feeling lazy will use the train between Menston and Frizinghall, especially in the mornings! If the bike's off the road or the weather's expecially bad, will wimp out entirely and go for the train/bus combo.

Chesham to Richmond 30 miles each way.
Twice a week is all the wife will let me do.0 -
5 miles each way in Exeter. All but about 400 metres on cycle tracks, including about 2 miles along the canal. Not the most direct route to work but much more pleasant. (Direct route is about 3 miles) Sometimes I take the long way home and ride to Haldon Forest Park and have a play there, then return home via a great downhill bridleway, some roadwork, then along the canal & home. About 3 hours!0

Newbie here - first post!
Used to commute Teddington to Park Royal ten or so years ago. Started new job in January this year and have commuted almost every day since - even in the snow!
Very lucky to have rural route in Warwickshire, not too hilly, 13 miles each way. Use a road bike and my quickest time home so far has been 38 mins 8)
Resisted temptation to upgrade and have stuck with Sora shifters on the front. So far I'm on my 4th chain, 2nd cassette, 3rd set of tyres and new cables and handle bar tape. No complaints as this sure beats filling the car up with petrol every week!0 -
about 3 miles (dunstable to luton) each way to work 4.2 if i'm picking lilun up from school (houghton regis )
currently done approx 2549miles on the bike since purchase in december 2006
my other bike done in excess of 4200 miles before it died completely (reminder cheap bikes are pants)
parts killed
one reah wheel
1 reah mech
new cables
1 tyre (front is starting to show wear though)
bottom bracket
new chain
and about 8 sets of lights (fecking chavs) new set is on order and will be epoxied onhttp://www.justgiving.com/bos2010 Fundraising for Sands, the Stillbirth and neonatal death charity

I think I must be lucky. I can get to work in about 5 minutes (if the traffic at the end of the street is light), maybe a mile or so. But I live by the river Lagan in NI which has a towpath that runs for 10 or so miles, so when its not raining that hard (its in Ireland, so rain is a fact of life), I often take 45 - 1hour minutes to get there, or come home, rarely both. I like the commute, it is relaxing in an odd sort of way. Endorphins or something, like what women get from chocolate...0

34 miles each way one or two days a week. Still trying to break the two hour barrier(almost there) but hills, headwinds and traffic lights make it difficult.
I don't look forward to the journey home as it starts with a five mile up hill stretch but once that's over the rest is pretty good.0 -
2.5 miles to work,2.5 miles home,2.5 mlles back to work, 8 miles home....I work at a school and do weird hoursYou don\'t stop playing because you grow old...You grow old because you stop playing0

22.5 miles each way, or 7 miles and the rest train.0
-
6.7 each way, 5 day's a week. Fairly flat cycle track until I get into town then a steep long hill for the last mile.....nice on the way home.....0

New to the forum, hello all.
between 12 and 16 miles round trip everyday(2 offices) except when it's pssiing down, then use my moto. sold the car 18 months ago.
Both routes are mostly off-road, with some road, and some sustrans route. Frankly I love it, so much that sometimes I add significant detours onto the return home journey, especially if the weather is good.0 -
28 miles round trip (direct)
I drive to work on Monday with all my kit for the week and my bike in the car, and commute to and from until Friday afternoon. If the weather is nice I detour slightly adding another 15 miles to the route home.
I used to get to work tired and lethargic, but now after having a shower I feel energised for the day ahead. I just hope I have the balls and the attitude to keep it up over winter.
And Ive lost 2 stone!!0 -
Hello All,
11 miles each way, 4 days a week, use the car 1 day to swap over dirty washing / shirts / towel etc etc...
Uphill most of the way in the morning, climbing from Stockport into Macclesfield, the advantage being it's downhill most of the way home0 -
Greetings...
I do about 6.5 miles each way, mostly quiet asphalt cycle/pedestrian trail. I could go about the same distance over the roads but they tend to be rougher and there are a lot of lights so it's slower given the speed I ride.
I ride 5 days/week year round, which gets to temperatures as low as -15 C. I ride a cheap MTB with knobby tires so it handles the snow pretty well in the winter and I don't have to care too much about the rust from all the road salt. I might break down and get some studded tires though because black ice is NOT fun.0 -
Been at this commuting about 2 weeks now Northfield - Edgbaston : About 12 3/4 mile round trip using summer/daylight routes (canal/off road cycle path). If (big IF) I do cycle in winter/darkness will probably take a shorter (on road) route home (I really don't like being on roads when it's busy, but usual route has no lighting). There is no secret ingredient...0

Around 12 miles (about 1931212.8 cm) each way, on a 30 year-old (I don't know what the SI unit is here, so I'll guess 4.6 microgollums) Fuji fixed gear conversion.
Snow riding can be quite a lot of fun on slick tyres and brakeless!
The only problem is arriving home and having to cool down before heading into the blistering 60F (that's about 16 french units) house.0 -
About 7 Miles SE. London into Central London. Hammer along the bus lanes for as long as possible and then avoid main roads into the middle.
the time of the Bicycle is coming..!!0 -
I got slagged off in the latest C+ for not getting out on my bike after posting much earlier in the year. I live in Portobello - the seaside at Edinburgh and work in Livingston Monday to Wednesday. I am doing 45 miles there and back on Mondays, driving Tuesdays ‘cos I work late, and usually taking the train out Wednesdays morning and cycling home. I may start cycling out as well. Thursdays and Fridays I look after my kids at home with some bike tagalong/ trailer trips. Saturdays I do 45+ miles fastish club run. I did my best ever TT time a couple of weeks ago despite feeling tired. The times for the commute are dropping only a little but the effort is noticeably easier. I often cruise along below my Heart rate training zone if my attention wanders.
The trip out is usually into the wind and uphill, the return trip much easier, although traffic does hold me up. The trip out is before the rush hour starts.
After three years of driving my kids to and from a nursery near work I feel I am a proper cycling commuter. The weight is falling off and I feel great. Downside is that equipment seems to keep wearing out and I’m constantly repairing something. I don’t know how much of this I’ll continue once the dark mornings start after the middle of October, but even if I take the train its about 12 miles cycling which is better than nothing.0 -
Hello people, I'm new here too...
Three and a half miles in to Aston and maybe a bit more on the way back if I take the canal. And yet another self-indulgent blog
My Rhythm of Life is syncopated0 -
I've just started commuting on a 15 Year old Raleigh hybrid.
I'm nearly 18stone and on a "get fit" mission.
My commute is 38mile return over the North Downs (600ft) and I've been doing it once a week to get used to it, last week was my first week of the planned twice weekly.
Unfortunately, the majority of my commute os on national speed limit dual carrigeway but needs must..............
Still find it a lot less stressfull than driving
Cheers
ChrisRacing snakes. It's not big, and it's not clever0 -
home to station (bike 1): 2 miles e/w
station to work (bike 2): 3 miles e/w
My maths tells me that's about 10 miles in total per day
It's just a hill. Get over it.0 -
Don't worry Stowler - they missed me with a 56 mile round trip. You're still doing a fair distance in a week. I only get to commute once a week too (its still twice the "average" weekly distance and the average cyclist doesn't have to cross the Pennines in to the bargain like I do). I went out with the club for the first time since my son was born this last weekend and was surprised to find myself leading the whole way...so it works for both of us. On a five miler it seems hardly worth getting changed.
Must dash - i have a rather spectacular commute home (and its unlikely to be this pleasant again this year)0 -
22 miles each way from surrey to canary wharf.0
-
13.5 miles each way from prudhoe to hexham taking the scenic route with sheep, rabbits and red squirrels for company0

Hello everyone, I'm new here! I do a 24 mile round trip from Crystal Palace to Richmond Park commute.Great view every morning (weather permitting) from the Palace to St Pauls, worth the hill just for that!0
-
I've just started commuting (after not having ridden a bike in 20 years).
Doing 5 miles each way from Richmond to Hammersmith.
Mostly on shared pavements and river paths.
Did it twice last week and once again this week - too tiring at the moment to do consecutive days.
Am fitting slicks to my MTB soon, that should help too.0
