I used to commute from Maidenhead to Bracknell every day, sun or rain. Now that was fun, especially going through Hollyport.

22 miles each way now days, but only if it isn't raining. Nearly all on cycle paths, but the sort you can actually go fast on :Dhttp://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/A-Termite-s-commute-to-work
  • 14 miles each way, heavy traffic all the way. 35-45 mins in, 40-50 mins home. Just worked up to 5 days a week, legs are dying by friday.
    Road: 2006 Trek 1500
    Off: 2009 Carrera Fury

I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

9 miles each way from north to central London. Frustratingly slow cos of all the traffic lights, roadworks, and slow moving traffic I have to weave around.
  • 10 miles each way into Birmingham. I manage to get a few hill sprints in + some nice urban riding as i approach the city. 4 pairs of socks still not enough in this cold!

Quick 17 miles each way. Edinburgh to Livingstone. Fun ride, not too short and not too long. Sometimes the wind is a little de-moralizing.
  • 7.4 miles out; 7.9 miles out: South Lambeth - Heron Quay. I average about 40 minutes each way, although this could be shorter if l wasnt a fat boy. :D
  • Here's mine. Tend to do it once a week when the weather allows (i.e. not in Mid Dec - early Feb). The elevation profile shows why I only do it once a week (and why it's dependent on the weather). Its actually about 28.5 miles each way rather than the 30 bikely reports.

Ideal if I can't make the club run at the weekend...

Oddly enough I prefer it at night. The high section at Buckstones is pretty much deserted for several miles - I often only see two or three cars so you really can concentrate on your thoughts (and the odd pothole / sheep), and just the noise of the drivechain for company...

Occasionally I come back through Marsden which is less pleasnt but also less exposed, and has a very long fast flattish run-off by way of compensation.

just moved house, 18.6 miles each way. More hilly than my old route too which is nice on the fixed gear.

  • Since starting a new job last October I've been doing about six miles each way, two or three times a week. Route takes in part of the London Network including an off road stretch that gets you round Staples Corner (N Circ Road) and under the A5 on a pukka shared ped/bike crossing. I have no time for cycle lanes, but this is a dedicated stretch, well thought out and actually goes where I want to go. Very impressed when I eventually found it.

Former route to Tottenham for about 18 months was daily 3m each way and much hillier but Ally Pally park was a bonus.

Started off with 14 miles round trip in 2004. Increased it gradually to a 22 mile round trip. Changed locations in January 2007 so now I get to do a 46 mile round trip a day.
On Sundays I go out for a fun 40 or so miles too :D
  • My commute is 8.4 miles one way, so a total of 16.8 miles which is Woodford in North East London to Enfield in North London.

I have two large hills to get up, but after two weeks I'm getting quicker, takes me just over an hour now when it used to take me an hour and three quarters.
  • I do a 39 mile round trip on a fairly hily route (1.5 mile long hill on the way in with the bottom third at 12%), 3 days a week. Oh yes, and as you will guess from my pseudo, I have had a bus pass for over a year now.

Just started an 18 mile each way commute between Eastbourne and Hastings.

Are there any prizes for the most pleasant ride...mine is as flat as a pancake and mostly along the coast. On the otherhand it was hell on Friday riding home into a 30mph wind (gale!). Oh yeah, and I got 2 flat tyres on Friday as well, so straight down to the LBS for some Ultra Gatorskins on Saturday.

  • 37 miles each way from Burton to Birmingham city centre once a week, some times twice dependant on whether I need the car for work.

I have found a route that doesn't touch a main road from Burton to Sutton Coldfield, and then a back street route to the jewellery quarter. The rural part of the commute is almost flat but there are a few undulations in greater Birmingham. I have tried the famous canal run but it is impassable on a road bike in many places as well as the path being overgrown with budliers. It can also be populated with characters that you would rather not bump into.

I have been looking for a cycle route between Burton and Birmingham but couldn't seem to find one that didn't go miles out of the way. What route do you take and how long does it take you? I'm fed up of sitting on the M6 when I know that I could probably do the journey quicker by bike.

    Thanks in advance,

Mine is only 2.5 miles each way, but my work has just moved offices to a location on top of the only hill in Bedford.

The ride in is a real workout, but the ride home? Well I push off and it's wheeeeeeee.......

4.25 miles each way. No real hills but 31 sets of traffic lights each way. Drives me nuts.

Mine is 22 miles each way, and it's fairly hilly.

Typically the worst hills are coming home and its adding at least 15 mins compared to going to work.

It doesn't help that its a heavy mountain bike with slicks on, but the gearing is all wrong and I so need a road bike. Saving for one so hopefully in the next month or so I can get that new bike.

Did my new commute, since moving out of London. 9.6 miles with a few lumps completed in 35 minutes, which is similar to the length of time it took me to do the 6.4 miles from Fulham to Holborn. Think only passing through one set of lights helped!

Fellow cyclist seem a little more friendly down here on the coast...got waved at twice...which is a high wave rate seen as they were the only two I saw!

New to the forum so hello everybody. Commute about 9 miles each way, most days, around 35 sets of lights which makes it a bit stop / start ....... average around 1 puncture a week!

Hi all, also new to the site.

I started commuting by bike a couple of years back. Mile & half to Orpington station, (brand spanking new Subway Carrera 2 nicked after less then 2 weeks).

Year later started to cycle to Bromley station and back, 4&half miles each way, including big hill on the A21 on the way back.

Now recently started cycling all the way to work and back. Orpington to Greenwich. 13 miles each way. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1830378 And loving it (despite the mountain of Ravensbourne and the aformentioned A21 Hill). Takes an hour (54 minutes my quickest) door to door, 20 minutes less then my bike, train, DLR commute.

    Last week
    Monday & Friday Bromley
    Tuesday, Wednesday & thursday Greenwich
    This week
All to Greenwich so far. (unless the weather turns real nasty)

6.5 miles each way, give or take, Walthamstow to Islington. Normally down the Lee towpath, unless I'm feeling brave and take on the Seven Sisters.
