Displace around 4km (Work is on the other side of the river) but travel around 14k each way.
Mostly flat except for the climb up to the hospital at the end of the journey in. The hill is great on the way home :D
    Do Nellyphants count?

    Commuter: FCN 9
    Cheapo Roadie: FCN 5
    Off Road: FCN 11

+1 when I don't get round to shaving for x days

9.2 miles each way - from Crystal Palace to Canary Wharf. Not that great having a hill as the last thing on the way home but it hasn't killed me yet...

5.5 miles eachway. Mostly through backstreets and parks but then the last mile or so through busy(ish) city centre roads.

9.7 miles! I just checked the commute I used to as a student which was only about 4 but seemed like a hell of a long way. Maybe I am getting better as I get older :)

It's up hill all and into the wind all the way there but I barely have to turn the pedals on the way home. It makes my day!

I'm now on 21 miles each way, for 42 miles round trip, having just moved house. I tend to average between 3-4 rides a week, but it depends on booked work and the weather.
  • My commute is just over 3 miles each way. when I 1st moved to somerset my commute was between 8 to 10 miles depending which route i choose. Now that i live closer to work I try to have @ least 1 big ride a month usully 20 to 30miles
  • I do 14.5 there and 15.5 miles back with 2 miles on a smooth canal path at the end of the journey there as a really nice serine way to cool down a bit - although the ice has been a little sketchy recently. And on the way home I have a 2.5 mile hill at the end of the ride - ideal! Mostly B roads in the countryside.

  • We work from home (wife and I) but do a 10 mile route every morning to wake up
Nearly all road but VERY hilly.

Gives a very good core fitness for all sorts of other activities.

Not much, 12 mile roughly each way to College. 3 days a week, going to 4 as soon as theres a place on the welding course for me! Maidenhead - Langley so its just down the Bath road (A4) mainly flat, but on the way back there's Castle Hill to get up - short and sharp!

One fine day in the middle of the night, two dead men got up to fight. Back to back they faced each other, drew their swords and shot each other.
  • My commute is 14 miles each way. From Seer Green in Bucks to Hayes west London.

First 5 miles to work in unlit country roads then into town. Nice mixture of hills and flats.

Takes me 50 mins to get there and 55+ to get home. I do this journey 2 to 3 times a week.

I ride a Cannondale Bad Boy with 700c wheels.

My commute is about 2 miles each way but if i move its likly to become nearer 3 - 4. Over the summer for my temp job I was doing a 4-5 mi commute depending on which way I fancied going in.
    Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
    Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
    Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

  • 5 miles each way, on north london roads takes between 15mins and 23mins depending on my lazyness and traffic. Used to take longer route say about 5.5 miles quickest I did that was 15mins with about 8 sets of traffic lights on the way! Was on a road bike and most lights went to green as I reached them, thankfully.
  • Hi, this is my first posting on a forum. I found this Commute Distance thread so thought I'd ask my question here.
I'm also interested in knowing what is considered a long commute. I currently cycle 2.5miles one way and love it. I am looking to move soon and my commute could be up 13miles each way (Woolwich to the City). Is this too ambitious (my colleague balked at 6miles!)? I often go on cycling weekends/trips and do over 40miles a day so I have the stamina somewhere but not sure if I would on a daily basis.
I hate the stress of walking getting on crowded train getting on hot tube walking again etc etc and love the door to door aspect of cycling and really don't want to give it up!
FYI I'm a fairly active young woman (not overly sporty).
I'd appreciate any advice from actual cyclists.
    Thank you

11 miles each way - can choose weather road or forest track. Marvellous.

Although cycling into a 53mph headwind with torrential rain today made it quite er...interesting.

    misspeppichan, welcome.

I think if you're comfortable with 13 miles each way you should go for it. Your base fitness will be considerably better for it (though I don't envy you doing it in London).

Once it's established as a habit (which will only take a week or so) you'll start to miss it on days when you have to use a car/train/bus/camel.

Go for it - every day becomes a little adventure.

    I have started commuting
3 x per week this week (planning every day next week) 10Km each way

I am a girlie cyclist......... How many other girlies are out there commuting at the mo??
I can't be the only one surely?
  • 20 mile round trip 3 times a week, only work mon to thur, go spinning on a wed, and do 50 to 70 miles at the weekend, mostly on a Trek T10, some on a specilized fsr xc pro mtb, lost almost 4 stone in weight in 6 months, lucky enough to have a few mates that cycle too, helps with the motivation. only another 3 stone to go.

    Depends!

1 mornings I just do to work and back: 12 miles round trip.

3 mornings a week I do Home, rowing club, home, work, home: 25 miles (+ about 8 miles of rowing)

1 day I do work, circuits, home: 18 miles (+ circuits - dead after that!)

Then I sleep like a baby!

Do some mileage at the weekend too - mainly to rowing club and back and town errands.

And so my 2.8 litre car sits in the drive - hooraaa!

Kingsteignton to Torquay approx 8.5 miles each way. If i'm fealing fruity I take the coast road through Shaldon which extends it to 12 miles and lots of hills, nice in the summer though :)

Not every day though as sometimes I need the car for work and somtimes i'm too lazy
  • Hi, I've just started back to cycling after a 3 year break. I've started to commute to Slough from Reading and is about 21 miles. Haven't got the fancy cycle computer working yet so I dont know exactly how far but I'm quoting Google Maps here.

I have only done it 3 times so far, twice there and back and yesterday I couldnt manage cycling back so I jumped on the train. From the cycle I can tell there is a slight slope down from Reading to Slough. It takes 70 minutes to get to the office and 90 minutes to get back home. The other thing is of course the wind is against you on the way back which makes it even harder.

I work from home 2 days a week so I hope to cycle at least 2 days a week. I'm going to try and keep this up. We will see. :)

23 miles each way from home to Rosyth, Fife. Not too much fun with a prevailing wind in my face on the way to work but boy, is it fast on the way home!!! Only on days with really high winds do I consider alternative transport. (or when I've slept in!!)

We've just moved office so my commute is now 8 miles return instead of 20. If anything the new route is almost too short to be worthwhile (I'm thinking about walking it instead)however there is plenty of scope to lengthen it on the way home.
  • I'm only less than a mile from work now but still like to take the bike on my daily 'commute', It used to be almost 10 miles each way though, in all weathers.

Wow! Thats quite a long slog! Do you go on the A4 all the way? I'd always thought that Reading to Slough would have been more uphill than down, especially on the dual carriageway bits before and after Sonning. Castle Hill in maidenhead isn't too nice either but thats not too long at least. What sort of time do you get into Maidenhead? (If you go A4!) I go Maidenhead - Langley weds thurs and fri so will keep an eye out! Keep it up and not long before you will want to cycle everyday!!
