  • 13 miles, Sutton to Charing Cross. Love it but still not used to central-london cycling!
  • My commute is only about 6 miles, but I add to it on nice afternoons.
  • Hello all

Being doing a regular 12 mile round-trip, just changed jobs and increased to 18mile round trip.

Wondering whether 2 days a week I should step it up to 24miles (including a short ferry crossing)

Encouragement about potential increase in fitness/stamina/whatever else would be much appreciated. I need convincing (althought the recent diesel price hike is a factor)

    Thanks
    Nick
  • Depending on the weather (and how much sleep I get, if ive had a drink the night before, which way the wind is blowing, if I feel lucky etc) i cycle a 25 mile round trip every day. some of it is stunning. some of it is traffic heavy with glass filled gutters. Love it though.
These two take the prize http://www.tredzblog.co.uk/2007/09/cycle-commuting.html

51 miles round trip, 3 days a week.

It only takes 20 minutes longer than driving! (rush hour)
I'd try and do it more often, but with the rain this summer and the fact that I go out with a pack a couple of lunchtimes for a fast ride, its a no go. I''ve also been 'banned' from riding in the dark so I'm going to have to let it go for the winter.

Got an ebay'd raleigh dynatech thats way too small for me, and I go through at least one spoke each week. I'm saving 'bike miles' ( @10p / mile that I would have spent on petrol ) so that one day I can buy something made this decade.

Here's my stats from my 11 mile one way commute from west London to the City today.

Only been back in the saddle for two weeks after a break, so not as fast as I used to be: -

    Overall avg = 10.9 mph
    Moving avg = 12.2 mph
    Max speed = 22.0 mph
    Total time = 01:04:00
    Moving time = 00:56:59
    Stopped = 00:07:05

Wow, that's only 7 minutes sitting at traffic lights, seems like more.
  • i have a 45/50min, 14 mile each way commute, nice flat ride along Langstone harbour :-) which i'm now doing on a Chris Boardmann hybrid after some nice person stole my Trek.

Does the fact I did my "big" commute for the 3rd time tonight count?

    See:-
    http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/My-big-commute

New "best" (?) time of 1h35m.... first go was over 2 hours, lol..... 10mph average seems pretty disapointing :(

Of course my usual routine is the 1.5 miles to/from the station at each end, that is the normal trip! So 6 miles a day normally.

4 miles there and back. Takes me 20-25 minutes, and then I get a train for 45 minutes into work. I'm replacing the bus+1st train section of my journey, and it takes about the same time on the bike.

I hope that, if I get a bit fitter, I might be able to go to a station further down the route instead.

  • I commute 5 miles each way.

Best to work = 12 mins.
    Rtn (uphill) = 14mins.

It's great to breeze past the traffic.....

I am moving flats this weekend, so I now have a cycle way to work (It was only a 10 min walk before!)....... Having read all of the commutes that some of you have I feel quite small and insignificant.

But for me it will be approx 20km round trip (and there are some hill climbs and detours that I can build in when summer comes....... it really is too cold for me to do them now!)

I am really looking forward to it though!
    :D
  • Hi, I'm new here.
My commute is around 9 miles into work, 12 home, 90% on rural lanes.
Some mornings I'll ride in, see the sunrise, and see just 1 car. Sweet.

Anybody else here commute into Stratford upon Avon?
  • I've recently changed jobs and now work in Kidderminster which is within easy cycling distance of my home in the Wyre Forest. :)
The most direct route is 10km, about 4km off road / 6km on road, although I normally take a slightly longer 12km route which is only about 3km on the road.
I am a mountain biking god.
    Unfortunately, my bike's an atheist.

7.5mile each way, about 1/3 off road.
  • 7.5 miles each way for me too. Hilly as hell in Bristol mind...

10 miles each way. If its nice I'll go the senic route home which is 13 miles.
    It's all good.
  • 3.5 miles each way, slow gentle up hill on the way home. Missed a day for the first time in many months yesterday as too "viral".
  • I was doing a route into Birmingham that went through a nice park with a nice woody interlude if the mood takes me and that's 5.5 miles each way.

If I dont fancy doing battle with the hordes in their cars then using the canal makes it a longer run of about 8 miles each way.

I said was as well beause some toe-rag broke into my shed and lifted my gorgeous cannondale complete with a fully charged up set of lumicycle halogens!

Thankfully my insurers are good and my replacement has already arrived - but it is now being tutted at by the wife as it stays safe in the house!
  • Zero at the moment as I'm one of the lucky ones who can work anywhere I have net access, usually at home though. But I did do 21 miles each way on a hard route in Scotland at least 4 days a week for almost a year, then 13 miles each way for 2 years. I found puncture-proof tyres were essential to avoid being late in the morning.
    Come through!
  • How far is a commute? Am I in the right place? Should I be somewhere else?

I commute 50 miles a day, (3 days a week). The other two days I ride the bus and/or surf.

Im in San Diego (USA) if it matters.

Oh, and I drink alot of beer. (usually before I get on the bus)
  • My commute varies depending on whereabouts in London I'm based! The closest site I go to is about 8.5 miles, the furthest is in Docklands and that is about 12.5 miles, but I've only ever cycled there once :-)

I do also have a site that is in my local town which isn't even 2.5 miles away, which is a shame as I really enjoy riding! I don't ever tend to ride "gently" and consequently usually end up trying to just beat my PB when going to this site!!

Most are about 10 miles which makes for a nice ride, no serious hills to contend with luckily as I've changed my route slightly to avoid the big one at Crystal Palace! My old bike isn't feeling good on a fast decent, the back wheel feels like it's stepping out of line but I'm hoping Santa brings me a nice new one (bike, not wheel!) this year so I can return to my favourite decent!

  • I commute 12.6 miles each way in/out of London – Park Lane used to be the most challenging part of the journey ‘til I discovered the cycle track through Hyde Park! :)

I cycle 16Km to work and the same distance home after work. I live in the Netherlands so its all flat, but there is always a wind as i live on the coast. I do not own a car ,so its five or six days a week with the bike in any weather conditons, and half of the distance is on unlit roads. In the winter i probaly see 30 to 40 people cycling to work and in winter its maybe 5 people.

My cycle commute is about 12.8 miles each way from West Wickham, Kent to Canary Wharf via the Greenwich foot tunnel.

So far, the fastest I've done this going to work is 47mins and coming home about 58mins (uphill). (Bike comp readouts of when the bike is moving).
