I had my first bike commute this morning.

21.5 miles (43 mile round trip) it takes about 1h 20 from a village nr Bedford to Milton Keynes. Mainly country roads and on the red ways in MK, although they're mazelike (and covered with school children walking 5 abreast!), so may stick to the roads in MK from now on.

I'm only going to do the ride twice a week as I have other commitments the other days so have to be home earlier.

twice a week, 16 mile to and fro so a 32 mile run helps to keep the legs going. I go from Saffron Walden to Stansted Airport and the journey is good untill I get to the airport then its all open so the wind gives you a right battering.

On the way to work if I am a bit late I go direct at 7 miles but most days do the scenic route at 11 miles along the Solent - always puts me in a better mood. On the way home 11 to 15 miles. Last few months on Fridays have done a very long detours with a friend from work - up to 45 miles.

    Hey guys,

My first post on this forum - given that 99% of my riding is commuting, seemed like a good place to start.

By the sounds of things, my commute is a bit weedy really, I've got about a 2km on this side to the train station, then almost exactly 6km (3.8mi) to my office.

This has been frustrating me a bit, so I decided this week to hop off the train a stop early and ride the last 37km. It was magic, but I think I'll need a few more rides to properly get back into this cycling lark.

25 miles each way. Once or twice a week. This is in North Houston, between Northern suburbs, and is flat and (usually) hot. The roads are busy, the driving standards poor and drivers generally inattentive, but the roads are in good condition with wide shoulders, even though they are semi-rural. When folk see me out, I'd wager they're thinking, "well, he's obviously not from round here..." It was never like this in the UK.

Sounds much like how I've found (commute) riding in some parts of my previous home, South Africa.

8 miles each way (Putney -> Southbank). First time this morning (moved offices, previous commute 1.4 miles each way!) and looking forward to it.

my normal commute is 7.5 miles each way, Ealing to Paddington, usually 30-35 mins depending (that's according to my cycle computer, so doesn't include the amount of my life wasted, stopped on the Sheperds Bush roundabout!), average varies wildly, best of 16.1.

I'm using the towpath more and more, which makes it 9 miles each way and is a much nicer ride, but I did crash my road bike last week, needing new rims and a dropout as a result.... Should have used the right bike for the purpose, really!

anyhow, I sometimes have to go to an office in Reading, so this morning I did the 40 miles from Ealing to just west of Reading, mostly along the towpath and Thames path. 3hrs 15mins, average speed 12.1mph (with only 10 miles on road) - got mildly lost twice.

just got to steel myself for the journey home now!

My commute is 26 miles in the morning and up to 40 on the way home. I do this twice a week at the moment.
Ths morning with the tail wind it took me 1:25, if I had done it yesterday it would have been even faster.
I do vary my route alot though, last week my into work route was 34 miles (I was 'a bit late!').
Tonight I was going to do about 35 miles home which I still might but it is raining a bit now so it will depend how cool I get.
The previous comment about 'steel myself for the journey home' applies today!

A quick update. On my ride home into the wind and rain I cut it short so only 32 miles last night, but it was hard work.
I drove in today but am planning to cycle again tomorrow. The forcast suggests that I should get in fast but slow home again!

  • 7.13 miles each way. Sometimes gets extended on the way back.
  • i cycle 12 mile in and 12 mile home

i find it energizes me for the day ahead - i do it in around 40 mins
strangely im happy when it rains as well it seems to really clear the head and focus you.

Currently doing 21 miles round trip Dartford to Greenwich then jumping on DLR for the rest of the journey, 2-3 times a week. Hoping in a couple of months to start going the whole way in every day (four day week).

Just started commuting this week due to the birth of our first baby 2 weeks ago. I do 12 mile each way, Coventry to Warwick and I must admit I'm loving it. And the bonus is I kill two birds with one stone, journey home and fitness work so I get more time with our new little boy!

Welcome! I started 2 years ago for the very same reasons and I am still at it. As you say, it keeps you fit and means you can use the saved 'gym time' to be at home with the family.
Congratulations on the new baby as well!

Thanks for the greeting! I've always been into mountain biking, but my wife works a mile from my office so we just shared a car. Now there's no excuse not to take to the road on 2 wheels!

I wrote in this topic a while back that I was ditching the train and only using two wheels for my commute - well I'm now on 200 miles a week (20 in and 20 back). It's been great for the fitness, but a bu*ger when it's raining/windy!

Blimey mate, that's impressive! My commute might be going up from 15 to 20, I'm sure that will hurt at first.

You'll get used to it in time. Used to be doing 250 over a four day weekend(Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday).

On the way in - 14 miles or thereabouts for me, half of which is on a smashing forest bike path complete with squirrels, rabbits and a pair of bluejays [^]. Takes about 48 minutes on my slick-shod, ancient MTB

100yard(!) ride to railway station for the train back(they don't charge extra for bikes down here) then a 2 mile spin home.

Arrival of new road bike next week will hopefully:

a)speed up commute time to enable

b)me to ride home and save the œ12 a week train fare.

    It'll be all gravy!(hopefully)
