Obviously not referring to everyone, but there are quite a few on here who don't say that they're Labour supporters or make out they are political 'free thinkers', but are remarkably quick to jump to Labour's defence 🙂
That said, we've heard of shy Tories, but after Labour's first five months, it's probably expected that we are seeing the emergence of the 'shy leftie' 😀

Well we wouldn'want to do any whining centre lefties out of a job 😉

It's more relevant that her views are of a Reformy nature and she comes over as very arrogant. On the plus side, at least she's admitted that the Tory Brexit's been A Bit Shit.

Perhaps I should follow the Brian and Jez MO and blame the website, Core Politics for publishing it and claim she is a victim? But that would sound pretty pathetic don't you think? Oh, perhaps not in your book.
Btw Glad you stated it was a POTENTIAL offence. Should she have done it? Obviously not. Nobody from the Labour party seems to have been arsed about it either.

But it isn't just the spent conviction. She didn't come clean to Starmer and she's still peddling her false narrative.
0 -
What is this false narrative you seem so keen on, and why are you so sure of it.
0 -
Oh you're doing fine on the whining. Full spectrum coverage. There's room for everyone 🙂

Uh, you've lost me. I'm not sure what you're trying to prove.

The mugging, whether it happened or not, violent or not and if the perpetrator was caught are irrelevant. She committed fraud, pleaded guilty and was convicted. She failed to disclose to Starmer the circumstances around her conviction and when it came out, Starmer's chief of staff said she had to go. She is still being disingenuous with the truth.
Nothing to do with rehabilitation. She lied to her boss and is still peddling half truths.

You and Jez still regard Haigh as being the victim here of a right wing press for having the temerity to publish a story putting a Labour politician in a bad light. Knee jerk reaction is to blame the messenger.

Her employer, Avviva, carried out an audit some time after the alleged theft of the phone, finding that she was using it to call relatives and other contacts on her phone. She'd already been issued a replacement phone. This doesn't tie in with the story that she's peddling about finding the phone at home and forgetting to inform her employer.
0 -
Whether or not the mugging happened seems pretty relevant tbh. If she lied about the whole thing, filed a false police report and claimed for everything in her handbag, that seems to be a much more serious offense.
0 -
Please tell me he flounced because someone called him a nasty name😂
0 -
The salient bit is she lied about the theft of the phone. Doesn't matter the circumstances around the alleged theft.
If you claimed for a Picasso that you didn't own being stolen from your living room wall during a burglary, it matters not if you were burgled at all does it? You'd still be the same fraudster wouldn't you?

It can be both. It's pretty clear that the RW press is doing all it can to destabilise the Labour government with whatever it can dig up (see all the stuff about Angela Rayner, for example which all came to nought). I don't think any of us have defended her over her conviction, or said she shouldn't have resigned.
It would be nice if the press went after all miscreants with the same vigour, but we know they won't, because of the colour of the rosette.

A Picasso and a work phone are quite different things. It's a pretty stupid comparison tbh.
0 -
The principle is the same. Substitute iphone for Picasso if you are struggling with the principle.
On the subject of principles, I assume that you do believe filing a false claim, no matter the value is still fraud.
0 -
Well RJS stated that he can't understand why she had to resign. Jezboy seems to think that it's ok because it was a relative minor value fraud and you yourself reckon it's all down to the RW press that she has to go and posted that it sends a bad message regarding rehabilitation of offenders. I assume from that you regard her rehabilitated and she no need go.

Not too bothered either way, TBH, any more than I am about Badenoch's youthful poor choices. If it's a choice between an iPhone and £bn's in covid bungs to mates, I know which I'd get more exercised about, regardless of the colour of the rosette. Just in case you missed it, most of those mates still have their £bn's, and one of them is still in the House of Lords.

And just a reminder: Johnson lied to Michael Howard about his affair, as you say Haigh did to Starmer over the phone. Was Johnson fit to be Prime Minister? This isn't whataboutery, as I've admitted I was happy for Haigh to resign over this... just seeing if the same criteria are being applied here.

Let's take the story at face value. She gets mugged, believing her work phone is in her handbag and reports it amongst her other possessions. Genuine honest mistake.
It turns up sometime later, she should hand it back in, but work probably hand the handsets out like candy, so she doesn't see it as important. It's unclear what happens from this point onwards, but it certainly seems she handled it badly.
Unlike the spurious claim for your imaginary Picasso, she doesn't benefit from her claim, which is surely quite important.

Interested in how her work did an audit that showed it was being used. Surely if a phone gets lost or stolen they keep the number? Even if the number had changed he’d they would have had to have kept the account to see where calls were going which seems odd. How could they tell (genuinely intrigued)?
My thinking is you either say no-one with a criminal conviction (even a spent one) should be an MP or you accept that once they’ve served their punishment and the conviction is spent they are free to be an MP and act as a Minister or Shadow Minister if appointed. Making political decisions based on what the press are saying is spineless. Have some conviction (no pun intended!).

I think Starter (rightly) assumed that the RW press would make as big a deal out of it as Bally is, and that it would be a distraction.
0 -
Yes, and she's been convicted, sentenced and that sentence is now spent some years ago and was known before her appointment. If someone's sentence is spent then they are considered rehabilitated. They'll pass a DBS check.
Like I said, we've become accustomed to all sorts of behaviour - plenty far more serious accusations - being defended for weeks, so it's a surprise to see such swift dismissal. If we're going to see fewer attempts to excuse the inexcusable that's good. Somehow I doubt it. The brevity of Starmer's thank you note suggests he was not that bothered about her resignation.
I couldn't really care less about the internal party politics, but changing a minister after only 5 months is not going to be to anyone's benefit.

Phone companies can track phones vis the EMEI number I believe, triangulating the location via inserted sim card. That also suggests that in this case, assuming her employer cancelled the number, she must have inserted another sim card.
I actually give credit to Starmer in this case. She lied by omission, at best, to him when he appointed her and she continues to be less than truthful now.
Starmer had no option but to let her go and at least he acted decisively, so credit to him.

She appears to benefit to the tune of a free phone.
Btw do you now recognise that it's fraud to claim for something allegedly stolen during a burglary that you know not to be stolen, whether or not any burglary took place?
1 -
Of course he wasn't bothered. He had so sack her. If you gave someone with a spent dishonesty conviction a chance and you subsequently found that they lied to you and were continuing to lie, what would you do?
1 -
Anyway, this is slightly more concerning than a work mobile phone.
If the modelling on which the plans for our future energy generation and transmission are based on over-estimates of future gas prices then that's bound to cause problems later. Obviously no-one planned for the Ukraine War and can't know what is around the corner, but having over-stated the likelihood of a repeat is not going to help the policy if that bet turns out to be wrong.
