Did this one go under "Too early to tell", or the "That's not the point I was making", or do you get both? Is it too early to delete the "But Corbyn" box? Sightings are getting rarer...

No bingo card needed as you simply have no basis for that statement right now. You'll need to wait for the Q3 stats.
As they used to say about exam technique, RTFQ 😉

Am I to understand the Labour government is delivering both improvements to P&O workers rights *and* a £billion investment from their parent company?
Sounds good.

The government will on Monday welcome more than £50bn of investment in the British economy as Sir Keir Starmer tries to reset his administration after a first hundred days marked by scandal and infighting.
Sky News has learnt that the International Investment Summit in the City of London will comprise more than £50bn of deal announcements - or roughly twice the £28bn unveiled at the previous comparable gathering held under the former Conservative administration.

Disappointing result for Reeves in her first quarter in charge, especially given they are meant to be 'going for growth'. Maybe they missed out the word 'reduced' 😊
Quote: "The UK economy barely grew between July and September, with uncertainty about the Budget being blamed for the weak growth.
The economy slowed over the three-month period, growing by just 0.1%, and shrank during September itself.
Labour made boosting economic growth its top priority when it came into power but Chancellor Rachel Reeves said she was "not satisfied" with these latest figures which cover the first three months of the new government.
However, many businesses have criticised tax rises in the Budget which they say will lead to higher prices and fewer new jobs.
Major companies, including Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's and JD Sports have hinted they will increase prices because of the changes.
The latest growth figure was weaker than expected and was a sharp slowdown from the 0.5% growth seen in the April to June period.
A number of economists said concerns about what October's Budget would contain had affected how firms and households had behaved.
Ben Jones, lead economist at the CBI business group, said firms had widely reported "a slowdown in decision making" prior to the Budget. He added that once it had been announced it had "set off warning lights for business".
The increase in National Insurance Contributions for firms together with other measures "is expected to trigger a more cautious approach to pay, hiring and investment", Mr Jones said."

Maybe she needs to take on Andrew Bailey's advice about what brakes there are on the UK economy.

They really should have gone for an early budget. Way too many prophets of doom out there, not helped by the government looking at the fiscal position hands on hips and shaking their heads.

If it helps, the reports are entirely consistent with the summer we've had - mostly people holding their breath for the budget - but things are definitely picking up.

The long wait didn't help, agreed. Although with their latest budget and upcoming labour law tightening, Labour are showing that they're tough on growth and tough on the causes of growth.

Funny, but the general view round these parts seemed to be that Bailey is an incompetent idiot. Until recently, at least.

I would have preferred them just reversing the insane NI cut that came earlier in the year, but I'm not sure what difference that actually makes. Probably narrows differentials between minimum wage and the next level up, but not much more.
If they can actually make the change to the fiscal rules have some effect, then that's a good move. There's 30 years of underinvestment to recover from, but it's a start. They seem to have started to be a bit more ambitious, so here's hoping.

The employer NI approach really hits companies employing lowly paid people e.g. supermarkets in a way that the employee NI change doesn't. So of the £12bn or so it actually raises, Tesco is going to pay £1bn of it.

Would it be mean to point out that Tesco is already benefitting from low wages topped off with working tax credits?
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

What's your logic?

Tesco rely on in work benefits to allow their workers to make enough to live off and still make a couple of billion profit.

Not sure if you've been reading, but do keep up with my criticism of Starmer & Labour. Sure, I'm happy that Tories are 4.5 years way from power, but I'd like to see them turn themselves into something other than a trolling party with no intellectual rigour.

Give me some examples of your harsh criticism, I must have missed them.
