I'm running out of funds to pay for lights. My Christmas money and money that I had saved up was put straight into popping a dent out of the car. Depending on whether I can get together œ170 will detremine whether or not I can competete. Is there a rough deadline for entries yet?

No deadline yet. TBH, if you are taking part in a team of 4, and each rider is taking equal turns, as a team you will probably only need 8hrs of lamp burn time, probably less, so you'll only need a couple of hours worth of lighting. Having said that, it is worthwhile getting something decent (Lumicycle).

Thats my birthday present sorted, unless I can wangle a weekend on a glacier somewhere. If thats the case I'd better start eating carrots now.

I used a 12w Lumicycle lamp and a Petzl Head torch during D2D. I had to recharge the battery once.
For SITS, I should be able to run a 10W Lumicycle lamp on my helmet and a 12W on the bike and have enough battery(s) to cover 8hrs of riding.

œ135 sounds good to me although I think I'll probably go to a bike shop in the dark and test a few.

This would be your basic requirement:
Clicky
One Lamp, NiMh Battery, slow charger. This is the cheapest setup.
10w or 12w lamp would probably be more than enough lighting and should give a reasonable burn time. (3.8-5 hours)
However, IMO you would be much better off upgrading to a fast charger, which will cost you another œ20, but it means you can recharge your lights at the event between rides.
Once again, IMO, this would be the best value for money:
Clicky
Two lamps, with the Endurance Battery and fast charger = œ240.
With the 10w or 12w lamp, this would give you a burn time of 5.7 - 7.5 hours from a much lighter battery. (814g Li-Ion - 1117g NiMh)
The Halide lamps are better in terms of burn time and light output, but not good value for money, unless you spend the whole year racing night time endurance events..
The bag batteries would appear to be more versatile in terms of attachment. With the bottle ones, you have to fix a sturdy bottle cage to your bike.
These are just examples from Lumicycle, I'm well aware that there are other manufacturers out there...

I have a cheap electron system. I'm gonna buy a new battery and look at getting a fast charger. Also, different bulbs would help I believe.

My only problem is the lights. I'm going away to uni this year so I doubt I'm going to be going for many night rides there and I'm certainly not going night riding on my own at the moment (not least because of the dangerous side of things but also because I've seen the Blair Witch Project too many times!).

Does anyone happen to have a spare uber stiff shock spring? Like say 900lbs, or as far over 500Lbs as possible? I want to convert my bike to a hardtail. Or a 30.0mm seatpost of reasonable length would be nice. I'd give both back afterwards of course.

Erm, IIRC that's the diameter of the one on my Coiler. I could bring that along. It's reasonably long - 350mm at least as I haven't cut it down.

I may have an extra XC bike there. Dan will be coming along, but will be too young to ride (shame as he's pretty quick), so you may be able to use his bike.
Alternatively, I may bring the Coiler as well as the XTC, but I'm not sure what bike carrying capacity I will have by then as we are getting rid of the Espace.

If people are coming from somewhere round where I am at the time, I was thinking of renting a van for this. I'll probably be coming from near Nottingham at the time. If I can find somewhere that rents vans with 4/5 seats and decent load space. Like a pickup or some such shiznat.
