I was a bit sceptical about turning a solo Lennon track into a Beatles one, but overall I think its a nice thing that been done well. I also like the remastered Love Me Do on the b side.

The video? Half of it is lovely, the other half ... not so much.

Had to laugh at my 14 year old rifling through our collection of CDs - "Oh god, you've got some really cool stuff!!" Apparently Blur are De Rigueur among her friends right now.

Listening to the top 500 on Greatest Hits Radio last week and I was amazed how much ELO seemed to feature (possibly as GHR like to play them a lot). Am I the only person who finds their stuff massively over-rated?

Can’t abide them - the very essence of bland.

In 1976, I saw ELO at the Birmingham NEC. I was there shouting with everyone else “Come back on, ELO, and carry on playing!”.

I thought they were great when I was in school studying music. To a more adult ear they sound too much production over substance. They have a huge catalogue of songs going back 50 years and there are probably quite a few absolute gems amongst them which will probably only surface if someone does some decent covers which simplify arrangements and bring out the actual song itself.

That said, I think Jeff Lynne himself is under-rated as a musician and song writer.

Having seen you in real life, you've either aged well, or you were too young to know better, though ....

I did some concerts with one of the founder members, Mike Evans, a cellist, and the gentlest person you'd ever meet. Sadly was killed by a round bale of hay falling onto his car from a field.

Might have guessed you might have some connection Mr T :) Tragic death tho’.

For people who only think Mr Blue Sky when ELO is mentioned, Showdown as in the still above might be a bit of a surprise.
  • Listening to loads of Luke Kelly. One of the great voices in music.

Any of you live music fans in the Southeast come across a band called Suncharmer? I think they’re Kent based and apparently a 70s inspired Indie group. Only asking as my daughter filmed a video for them last week so thought I might check their stuff out when I get a chance.

And I’ve been listening to his ex partner in crime Sonic Boom’s new record with Adrian Sherwood and Panda Bear.

Fantastic album. Saw them at a small venue in Coventry earlier in the year.
  • Air are touring the 25th anniversary of Moon Safari next year. I love the album, but not sure if it's going to be enhanced by the live experience. Anyone seen them back in the day?

I saw them close at Glastonbury one year (2002?) and they were a complete downer, I was never a huge fan but it didn't really translate as a live experience for me.

The Smile (Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood with a jazz drummer so you can rest assured most songs won’t be 4/4) have a new single, Wall of Eyes, out, in anticipation of a new album in 2024.

It’s a lovely 5/4 swingy lullaby (or 10/8 if you count it properly)
  • Got a ticket for Madness in Kingston.

That's them, The Vaccines, Shed Seven and Gruff Rhys booked for January. 😀

We have tickets for Depeche Mode in January. I was just thinking they were the first proper concert I went to ... 38 years ago. That's quite a gap in seeing them I guess.

    Madness were brilliant last summer.

  • Great gig on Saturday night in Glasgow - Queens of the Stone Age, even better than expected!
  • Also saw a Canadian band called The Damn Truth a couple of weeks ago locally in a wee hall - they were a brilliant 70s style rock band with a great female singer and good self penned songs.
They definitely deserve to be playing bigger venues!

Just listened to a bit from IoW 2022, and it seems their music & act doesn't suffer from adding 40 years to their ages. Suggs never relied on any sort of vocal technical prowess, so it doesn't feel like he's straining at all to keep on top of the vocals, and the energy's still there.

Well exactly. They're naturally funny enough to play up to the "we're old now and we know" aspect and do it very well...
