sounds like I'm pretty alone here but to me form and function are v v important - really nicely designed and manufactured stuff just makes me smile and want to look and care for it.

my crit bike had ultegra and dura ace because if i smashed it up i wouldn't care - if I trashed Record/SR i'd cry.

Campsg looks far, far far nicer and works just as well snd better thsn Shimsno.

Think you need a grown up to do the typing for you. Is Campsg the old analogue iteration of the Italian group set manufacturer Campagnolo who now sell EPS components? And Shimsno, who they be?

I am with you MF. Totally understand people who just want something functional and good value, but aesthetic appeal is a big thing for me.

If I am dropping a fair bit of cash, I want something that makes me glad I own it and gives me joy every time I use it.

Not alone but imo Campagnolo ruined things by going chunky 4 arm cranks.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

You can still buy just about everything for Rival 22, Force 22 and Red 22 on Wiggle today and Planet X sell loads of bikes kitted out with 11-speed Rival and Force, so clearly SRAM are still manufacturing mechanical components.

Also, from what I have read, Shimano have developed mechanical 12-speed R7100 and will release it in 2023 unless they decide to pull it to spite all the whingers here!

Bet there won't be a rim brake version.

Sadly, I think you're probably right.

I have been buying up AXS rim-brake kit and shifters as I fear its days are numbered too.

Yeah I get that, I guess I'm a bit more function over form.

If it looks good & works that's a bonus but for me the function is more important.

That said I don't think Shimano groupsets are particulalrly ugly, they just probably aren't quite as bling as some others.

That said as well the price of 105 Di2 is bananas.

Must admit my slight preference for Campag is down to function rather than form - yes it does look a little bit nicer too but apart from those hideous glued together Shimano cranks which are off the scale ugly there's not a huge difference aesthetically.

Pricing on new parts is crazy. I've just bought a mint 2009 Colnago C50 with full Record Titanium 10sp and Reynolds carbon wheels for less than the price of a 105 Di2 groupset.

but but but but 10 speed and rim brakes!!!!!!! you'll never be sllowed on a club run on that although it sounds utterly stupidly lush.

Here it is, late Colnago C50, full Record titanium and Reynolds 46mm carbon tubs, all for less than the price of a very average new groupset:

Picked yourself up a lovely looking bike there.

I haven't ridden mine for a while, but of all the bikes I have owned (which is a far few!) the C50 always got the most comments/compliments by far.

Not directly related but, vis - a - vis the Shimano/Campagnolo debate:

Watching the tour yesterday and the camera sometimes zooms in on the rear mech/chain rings, shifters etc etc on the various bikes throughout the stage.

I don't recall seeing any Campagnolo kit at all . . . why is this?

Campag sponsor 3 current World Tour teams, the majority run Shimano. I would assume it is a simple matter of cost. To provide groupsets and wheels for a team of 25+ riders, each with multiple bikes, costs a lot of money. Campag are a much smaller company than Shimano and Sram and therefore the costs of supplying equipment, as a sponsor, to lots of teams would be too great for them.

If every bike’s rear derailleur had been shown, and you’d have been watching, you’d have seen 21 of them. They don’t show every rear derailleur, so your chances of seeing one are slim. There are 21 riders running them. Did you spot any SRAM rear derailleurs?

No, didn't notice any SRAM either. Was just wondering if there was much "representation" of Campagnolo on bikes in The Tour. Your comment that there are "21 riders running them" answers my quesion - thanks.
