For what it's worth, newer, wider, U shaped (?) 50-60mm rims are no problem in crosswind gusts up to 30/35 mph, a bit twitchy above that. Mind you, I weigh several tons, which helps me stick to the road... ;)

Deeper the better. You get the hang of them in about 4 rides snd like most things cycle related over the past 10 years theres so much drama llama about everything

its all about the depth and da whoosh

Shame they only do the 60 and 80+ mm ones as front wheels to be combined with a rear disc. I am not convinced 50mm would be worth investing in my case... these would be used mainly in time trials, to give me some advantage but yet keeping the bike within the "road bike" category.

The rim brake 38's have been OOS for ages now.

I'm tempted by the 50's as they are in stock but they are deeper than I ideally wanted.

I struggle to control 42's in a strong crosswind as I'm on the light side so not sure how I would cope with 50's.

The 28's are in stock but they aren't deep enough.

Primes are pretty wide U shaped rims (27.5mm) which are supposed to give better crosswind handling than older narrower V shaped. It also means that visually they look much less deep - my 38s look pretty shallow on the bike. I would definitely go for 50s if I were buying another set... However when I bought the 38s were in stock not the 50s. I'm only 67kg and have no issues whatsoever in crosswinds - doubt an extra 12mm will make much difference.

That's really interesting thanks, I will consider the 50's then. I'm only 64kg so I was worried they'd be too much for me.

I'm looking at these for my winter bike so there's no rush.

I ride 42's on my best bike so seems a wee bit mental to have deeper wheels on a winter bike though.

I wouldn't mind a pic of them on your bike if you have one mate.
I'm not Davo, but these are the 60mm prime blacks on my bike

You can buy a pair of 85 rims for less than 400 from Prime, then you are looking at 150 pounds of hubs and 120 pounds of bladed spokes… 670 in total… it’s not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things… still a lot of money from where I sit

    Nice.

    Cheers mate.

I'm gonna keep an eye on the 50's. Still not the done thing to ride deeper rims in winter than in summer but I'll rewrite the rules for my case.

What do you guys think about these? The guy has no feedback, but they don’t look fake to me. Any minor damage to the spokes or bearings can be fixed by me… could be a bargain… I don’t mind narrower non tubeless rims, which I think these are.
Might be 10 speed only though…

lots of potential given the caveats of final bid price, rim wear and spares prices.

major good point is that you can do all the work on them yourself.

you'll need to enquire re 10 speed only

up to you to put a final value on them and stick to that in the didding war.

150 quid would be my absolute max for these... I reckon they are around 2010, I fixed some Reynolds with similar looking rims back in the days

I eould have no problem using something that old - my Planet X 50s are around the same era - all depends on rim condition and final price.

Chuck an holding bid in for £151.72 or some other such awkward amount and see what happens.

In fact, I think they are a pair of Assault C from 2011, although the rim decals don't match 100%, but they might be worn or something...

Shimano 11 speed is 2012- so they're probably 10 speed only

... actually, I think I found them on the 2011 catalogue... exactly same decals and they are a mix of Assault/Strike 46/66, which makes sense, as the rear looks deeper

11-speed 11-34 cassettes like I have on my Cube fit 10-speed hubs, they come with a spacer for 11-speed hubs.

I would feel terrible showing up at a local TT with a 34T cassette... :D
I am actually annoyed Ultegra's smallest is 25T and not 23T... for that I'd have to pay a fortune for Dura Ace. Jokes aside, close ratios really help in time trialling, ideally, I'd have a 10-21 cassette if it existed

Can recommend Gixen to set up a snipe https://www.gixen.com/main/index.php - just stick in a £150 max and it will do a last minute bid on your behalf.

Would probably be even less if they are not 11 speed. I’d have to factor in a rear rebuild, so probably 100 quid worth of hub and a bit of spokes

well just buy Dura Ace then if you're happy with 10 speed.

New in the ratios you want can be found quite often at £50-60 on either the 'Bay or random shops.

What's the deepest you can go and not have to faff about with valve extenders ? 50mm, 60mm ??

I use 80mm valves on my 60mm rims. Extenders are a ballache.

extenders are fine espesh if using Conti tubs

    Removed valve core

    screw in extender

    forget

ride along with proper tyres making mega wheel noises

Get a puncture with an extender on a 40mm valve - only have a 40mm valve spare tube and drop the little extender removal tool and can't find it again. Have to f@nny about with patches in the rain.

Note to self to buy 80mm valves in future. Specific set of circumstances I know

    :)

Thanks - yes I've used extenders before but would rather avoid if possible.

the 60 mm Prime rims come at £ 179 in 24holes, which is competitive with an import from China. Any reason why one can't use the 24 for a front wheel? Or in other words, is it a symmetric rim? Anyone with a pair of black edition can answer?
