  • Thought the ToB dipping back into Yorkshire made for a better race - they really used the terrain. Hardly a surprise the plug has been pulled, given the situation though - it's the lack of police that's really nobbled it, apparently.

Tomorrow's test cricket is off too, fwiw.
  • Where are the police needed? I genuinely don't understand.

They will be gutted, not being able to race along country roads on their motor bikes, with big smiles on their faces. Instead they will now all be practicing their somber looks in the mirror, faced with hours of standing outside some public building, most likely.

Still, they will probably look a lot happier than local business owners, taking yet another financial kick in the nuts. Or, the fans who have prepaid for travel and accommodation to watch the race.

    Tomorrow is cancelled

Decision yet to be made on final 2 stages.

Same with the golf at Wentworth, premiership rugby and the horse racing.
But of course tonight's football went ahead, "following direction from the Football Association and Uefa".
To be fair to the football authorities, fans and teams had travelled hundreds of miles to get to games so abandoning them at the last minute would have been very disruptive.

The motorbike police will be needed to support the pageantry of the next ten days (Queen's body being returned to London, escorted to Westminster Abbey etc).

Most people's lives will carry on as normal of course, not that you'd know that from the media coverage.

I made the same point in regard of the ToB, in the post above yours.
They have cancelled today's two scheduled matches, as strangely have the Irish premiership.

Currently, the weekend's games are going ahead, although the situation may well change.

The queen had to die for Movistar to win a stage race...

After showing signs of turning into a decent quality race a decade ago the ToB really is starting to regress unfortunately both in terms of the quality of the riders and teh quality of the organisation. What with the loss of the ToY and Ride London and, from the limited attention I give it these days, a more or less non-existent domestic pro road racing scene it feels like we are going back to the position of the late 90s / early 00s (in men's racing) after the promise of the 'Sky era' although at least we still have a few decent sized pro squads for the time being.

Depending on events up in Scotland it may well be that the rest of the race ends up getting cancelled anyway I suppose.

I dunno, I don't think a weird world's has helped. I can't get over seeing WvA and JA sprint up my local high street last year. It still has potential yet...

I thought that all wasn't happening for a few days? They seem to have enough motorcycle police to escort the royals around most of the time.

Maybe it's to quell the civil unrest.

Is it a coincidence that the race went close to Balmoral on its first stage? #conspiracytheory

That these Canadian crits can get such a strong field says a lot about the ToB.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

  • Aargh, the Canadian cameraman must be related to Jack Douglas.
    He’s making me sea sick.
Not only is he unable to hold the camera still but he cannot get the riders in focus.

I’ll give a pass on the Vuelta as the riders have had an additional 2 weeks rest before ToB began.

Fair. Same could have been said about the ToB though.
Personal thought, probably flawed, did Porte not consider the Worlds as an exit?

Cosnefroy takes it with a late attack. JV we’re killing the race and it looked to be a dead cert for WVA but when Cosnefroy attacked on the final climb Laporte couldn’t close the gap. Matthews pipped Girmay for second with Wout 4th.

Pog was pretty anonymous, only saw him briefly as part of a strong group that tried to get away on the penultimate lap.

That was a great effort by Cosnefroy, Hatch and Smith had written him off with a kilometre to go, but he still had enough left to take it comfortably.

He looked like he’d written himself off at times. He was looking back as if he was desperate to get caught and end it. There were a few times where he looked like he had nothing left but managed to get back out of the saddle and go again. Was please JV didn’t get the win.

Think he misjudged the line too and almost stopped crossing the lines about 50m before the finish.

Was going to quibble about an entire generation in 1914, but tbf that was just an heir rather than the monarch themselves.

    Any Russians in 1919?
