Chatting to an acquaintance yesterday. He'd just had a call from the Audi Main Stealers as his 4 year old car was in for a service. The bill was a smidge over £3,000!!!!

For a 4 YEAR OLD car!!!

    I didn't ask.

I’d ask why he was using the dealers. My servicing costs dropped by 75% when the warranty ran out.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

This, I never understand people who use a dealer for standard servicing / maintenance once out of warranty.

You don't even have to use them while under warranty do you. I certainly didn't with my motorbike

    Even at a dealer 3k ...!

I'm assuming it's an R8 or whatever the current equivalent is ?

A good friend has been offered a 21 year old BMW with full main dealer service history 😳
You could buy the car many times over for what's been wasted in having the apprentice change the oil.

    If it's a straight 6, have it.

No, it's nothing exotic like an R8 or even an RS4 or 6. I think it's an A6 Avant. He's always used the main dealers and trades in his car every 5-6 years with them for a new one. He says they give him a better price for his old car on deal as they have looked after it. But still. £3k on a 4 year old!!!

Something big must have been wrong with it. I've got a nearly 6 year old BMW that I get dealer serviced and the most I've ever paid is £600, and that included some tyres at £200 each.

The second something properly goes wrong like an LED light, or when the discs need replacing, it's going to hurt, but some of these things are dealer only, and even where they aren't it's the parts more than the labour thst hurts, and that's not really going to change if you go elsewhere.

I suspect my next car will be a decade old and in range of the local garage though.

It's not age, it's mileage. A 4 year old car could reasonably be anywhere from 30 to 80 thousand miles. Some Audis require timing belt/chain replacements at the high end of that range, and thanks to stupid design that means dropping the whole engine, transmission and suspension out of the car. Gonna be expensive whoever does it.

Well, you'll just have to patent a sustainable obsolescence model for the EV industry.

They will do it with software, like the phone manufacturers.

With every software update the car goes slower and the battery lasts less?

The urgent “safety” software update to allow you to drive will cost x amount and they won’t let you drive without it, or something like that.

According to the economist special on the topic where they interviewed a load of car manufacturers, EVs are about 2 things < the engine, which will be commoditised, and the software to run the car, which will be the differentiator.

Well it happens with phones and tablets, right? They do software updates that slow the processors down to preserve battery life. Supposedly.

With cars they'll just charge shit loads to upgrade the software and discontinue support for previous versions. Cos if your car gets a virus that's not safe is it? ££££

Excellent. I'll get my son to write some virus code that infects only cars and demand mucho bitcoin to unlock it. We'll call it "RUST-Locker" and I'm Copyrighting and Trademarking the name right now! I have you all as witnesses :D

What makes you think cars won't be hacked or targeted? You are one of those linux people who thought it was better because there were no viruses, and didn't realise that this was only because no one could be bothered, aren't you?
