    Aptera

42kw, that's a good power rating for the size and dynamics of the car.

So my old focus has had a bad week.

After leaking coolant it had the plastic (!) Thermostat cover replaced, 2 drives later and the next bit of plastic spectacularly cracked and threw coolant all over the engine.

My tentative diagnosis is that there is therefore something blocking the system. That is causing the pressure to build up too high for the plastic (!) bits

Does this seem likely and if so, how catastrophic is it likely to be..?

It's currently parked outside a garage waiting for it to open tomorrow but I'd like an idea of whether or not it's worth spending cash on...

(As said, up to now, it's been fine. No other problems at all)

I helped get them planning permission for the site where they were building it. It’s only a few workshops in an old farm yard near the futuristic eco-house McMurtry built. I wasn’t allow to see the car when I went to site as I hadn’t signed an NDA.

Have a look at the cost of a replacement before writing it off - I scrapped my last car and on reflection it may have been worth fixing given the cost of used cars right now.

But if you do scrap it get some quotes on line don't just call the local scrap yard to pick it up - there was a few hundred quid between what my local scrap yard offered and what I got.

    Is the thermostat opening?
Cooling systems are pressurised and it will simply find the weakest point.

I did have a Fraud fiesta that had a blocked cooling system but it was an easy fix.
Spares are a plenty for Focus's. Try fix it.

@pinno what is this? I assume they’ve done some sort of chop job (assuming it is actually a Porsche)?

There’s a few other cars in there too (was taking a photo of the sculpture so they’re hard to see). The red one is badged as a Ferrari, possibly a Fiat X19 or Triumph TR7? My guess is they’re kit cars though

Porsche 914 as Pinno says. White and green one is a Fiat X1/9 and the gold one looks like an Opel GT. Can't make out the red one.
I really am that sad, I should probably try to get a life.

The side grill in the photo looks like the 250 gto side vent but Ferrari didn’t do that grill shape in a convertible with those un-faired headlamps. Mix the two together and you get this kit car? Think the front fender has a similar signal lamp and in the photo the car looks like it tapers downwards heavily at the back with a bright topside fuel filler?

Well yes, but very pimp! Back in the 90s I lived in near Kings Cross in Sydney for a long while. Used to often see one of those cruising through, roof down, some young spiv driving, a few bimbos along for the ride, and it had been (clearly) lowered, with fat wheels and an absolutely banging hifi, some serious doof doof going on...

914 was always the ugly duckling and as much VW as Porsche.
Age and rarity have bumped the value of them , I’d have one fo sho.

I quite like them - a bit different to the norm - obviously getting old enough you'd need either to know your way around a car or have the money to pay someone that does to use one regularly which is a shame but true of pretty much everything from that isn't a modern aerodynamically styled box on wheels.

The problem is that (outside of 911's), older Porkers can have mediocre value which makes restorations less feasible combined with spares parts going through the roof.
I need 2 front wings for my 944. I've sourced one 2nd hand one in great nick for... £445. New, you are looking at £1500+.
I doubt spares for that 914 will be easy to get. Perhaps there's enough VW in them that you could get VW parts - they are a plenty.

It’s the body that will cost the big cash. Even US imports will have rot in them and panels are as rare as the cars!
Engines aren’t astronomical- most used the late VW Type 4 engine which is much more expensive to repair than the usual Type 1 engine but not mega money.
The 914/6 was a true Porsche engine that I presume will bankrupt most people.
I think they say when considering if you can afford a Porsche, the real question is ‘can you afford two’ ?

I had a tennis comp doubles partner for a few years who drove one. It was a two tone bright red, with white roof Corniche 2 door. Wire wheels, with 3 point gold plated knock offs on the hubs. The Winged Lady was also (optional) solid gold. He had a key ring for it which was also a half size of that statue, also in solid 18k gold. That alone was worth more than my car... Interior was white leather with red piping, and red carpets.

Utterly hideous thing. He sold it and bought an even more horrific Bentley Continental R, in an astoundingly lurid shade of red.

Also had a couple of 4WD's to tow his boats/jetskis/toys about. Missus had two Jaguars, one XJ-R sedan to take the kids to school, and an XK-8 convertible for going to lunch with friends.

One of the nicest, funniest, most down to earth people I've ever known, just with more money than he knew what to do with, and no taste. :-)
