The Tokyo 2020/1 Olympics Thread *spoilers* (not the road race cycling)

So since the football has already started, why not start the thread.

I saw the Dutch olympic women's football team beat Zambia 10-2....

Watched the end of the mens Cote d'Ivoire beating Saudi Arabia earlier. 97th minute, Cote d'Ivoire 2-1 up, one of the Cote d'ivoire players got himself sent off after they'd won a free kick on the edge of the Saudi Arabia area.

Think USA lost 3 nil which was a shock. First loss for ages.

Ended 10-3 but probably safe to switch off before Banda completed her hat trick for Zambia. Which is quite an impressive personal achievement in such a drubbing.

Highlights here https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57918549 Zambia's tactic of one at the back probably ill conceived.

I feel like I am the only one with the opening ceremony on tv.

Anyway, it’s basically one massive corona reference which is a shame.

I guess when your death toll isn’t a world leader you’re not so desperate for escapism.

Should have gone with one of the comedians they sacked, make it a bit edgy.

I think the athletes who chose not to go to the opening ceremony are the winners here.

I feel you're not really in the spirit of the games, Kingston.

What I've seen of this opening ceremony is more downbeat than me.

Thomas Bach wasn't very up tempo. Emperor was very brief.

I gave up halfway through the kabuki and piano thing.

If the transgender athletes in women’s sport are not benefitting from being born male, where are the female to male transgender athletes in men’s sport?

The gymnasts doing things where I can't imagine ever doing the simplest thing they do, then doing them on a balance beam, with somersaults. All amazing.

Of course being born male gives people an advantage in sports where strength and speed are factors.
Unfortunately stating what to the vast majority is the bleedin' obvious marks us down as transphobic in this topsy turvy world.

I remember having to just walk along a beam in school when I still had good core strength and reasonable balance. That was difficult enough.

First GB medal won with a bronze in the judo. Have to admit I always think the points in judo have been won by the other person, I just can't judge who has thrown who.

One of the expected gold medals for GB has gone with Jade Jones losing in round one.

Man it must suck being a West european gymnast. You get up, all 0% body fat, and do something objectively amazing but then some teeny tiny chineese girl steps up and looks like she's on wires...

Yeah, although I think they said she won a medal for Iran last time.

The other nice story was the gymnast who took part in the vault at 46 years old. She's competed in 8 straight games since Barcelona!

Anyone else get confused and not realise the two Brit women are twins?

I find women's gymnastics a bit frustrating. The events are incredibly athletic but then they have to chuck artistic style into the floor for no obvious reason.

It's part of the Team GB genetic cloning programme. Soon all competitors in all events will be created in labs to suit the physical requirements. It has been trialled successfully in triathlon and cycling has given it a decent go.
