The UK is set for the slowest growth of the G7 richest economies next year, the International Monetary Fund has warned.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62299490
It is predicting UK growth will fall to just 0.5% in 2023, much lower than its forecast in April of 1.2%.
The global economy has shrunk for the first time since 2020, the IMF said, hit by the Ukraine war and Covid-19.
With growth stalling in the UK, US, China and Europe, the world "may soon be teetering on the edge of a global recession", it said.
I'm surprised we are still p1ss1ng about over a leader.0 -

Mortgage affordability test scrapped by Bank of EnglandThe "stress test" forced lenders to calculate whether potential borrowers would be able to cope if interest rates climbed by up to 3%.
I know this was announced in June but doesn't this seem like a weird time to decide not worry about interest rates going up?- Genesis Croix de Fer

Related, I can't recall if it is a current proposal or one of Truss's pledges to include allowing payment of rent to be taken into account when assessing affordability of mortgages i.e. if someone shows they've paid £1000 in rent for x years without missing a payment then they can pay £1000 per month on a mortgage. Sounds sensible to me but, as was pointed out on the radio, unless the housing supply increases making it easier to get on the ladder isn't much benefit.0
-
Problem with rent payments is they're not part of the system and therefore can be manipulated.
I could pay you £500 a month to rent a room at your house and you could pay me £500 a month for odd jobs.
The paper trail would say I’ve not missed a rent payment.0 -

There are no large scale Hydroelectric scheme planned in the UK as of 2020. However, it is predicted that pumped storage will play an increasingly important role in the UK electricity grid in future years as more intermittent sources of electricity generation come on line.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroelectricity_in_the_United_Kingdom#:~:text=There are no large scale, electricity generation come on line.
Get on and build the Severn Barrage and while they are at it look for locations around the UK to build more hydro electric power stations (batteries).

5 takeaways from the BoE statement today.
https://duncanweldon.substack.com/p/five-takeaways-from-the-bankThe key charts are below:
GDP contracts and then flatlines, with an historically weak recovery.
Inflation remains at the kind of levels the UK hasn’t experienced in a generation throughout next year.
And unemployment rises throughout the forecast.
Real household incomes suffer an unprecedented hit. The Bank’s forecast produces a fall of 1.5% this year and 2.25% next year. That would be the biggest two year drop since at least the 1940s.
But this forecast is almost certainly wrong
It is vitally important to remember that this forecast assumes no changes in fiscal policy.0 -

Experts in the media a year ago or less. "Don't worry there is no sign of interest rates rising". Mmmm, very prudent that.
The historic average interest rate anybody!?0
