What's fun about football, matt, is that not always the best teams win!

    Greece. 2004 champions.
That said, Italy were a better team than England.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Yes they were. Probably weren't the best team in the semi though

Fortunately this time the better team did.

    34 unbeaten.

Relegating England to 3rd, or worse?

I dunno, over the tournament I think England were better than Spain - but Spain really elevated themselves for that semi.

It was a super super high quality semi - probably the best international match I can remember seeing.

Yeah but everything is fine as there is the world cup to look forward to as the Shearers / Linakers say in a self congratulatory we have already qualified way.

But I suppose if it's rigged that they get San Marino in every qualifying group they will get there.

This is what Einstein's theory of relativity was all about.

If you are England in a group with San Marino, Faroe Islands and Luxembourg then you have a bye into the tournament.

Switch England with Scotland and they are moaning that they are in the group of death

I do have a comment in the back of my mind from a proper football fan, dyed-in-the-wool, -lives-and-breathes-club-football-fan - "what you have with England I have week in and week out with my club"

I think we've seen one of these quite recently.

Anyway I thought it was a great tournament - that Italy Spain semi was mega, as was the group of death and I think generally the tournament was good fun, apart from players almost dying on the pitch.

I think even without the England success it was really enjoyable, and that as well really made it exciting. It was just a bit of a shame it flew about all over Europe - missed that carnival vibe and ultimately corona still cast a bit of a shadow over it (are these crowds really a good idea?).

    Overall, it was great.

Re. The penalties. It is a but of a lottery and even great penalty takers miss.

Look at the Italy team, the one guy who was bang of a guaranteed certainty to score, Jorginho, who never misses...had his penalty saved.

He's scored 15/18 for Chelsea which is slightly above average.

It may be a lottery for us but for other countries and teams it is anything but a lottery.

Clicking the link I've seen him on TV - he had a period some years ago where he was one of the regular faces on panel shows or doing guest stand up slots.

I had a vague recollection as well. I think he must have decided to reinvent himself as edgy/reactionary on account of reduced bookings.

From his Wikipedia page, grumbling about all the other comics on panel shows.

"out of touch, smug, superannuated, overpaid TV comics with their cosy lives in their west-London ivory towers taking a supercilious, moralising tone, pandering to the ever-creeping militant political correctness of the BBC"

Given he's from the gritty former industrial town of Kingston upon Thames and went to St Andrews University, it all feels a little confected.

I'm with him on Dara O'Brien and Mock The Week not being remotely funny though - as they must get sick of hearing not since the Scottish guy left anyway.

I had no issue with bringing on young players to take penalties if they are the better penalty takers - only with bringing 2 on so close to the final whistle that they'd still have that nervous energy, that surge of adrenaline, and that's not what you want when you are in a pressure situation like penalties.

As Southgate said though if he brought them on with 15 to go would we have reached penalties? I suppose the response might be why not bring them on for Sterling and Grealish if they weren't on the list ?

As per the article posted above, these are reasonable questions, but it's easy to overplay the effect of that one managerial decision, and discount all the other factors that were not in either team's control.

This whole myth about the curse of England and penalties is based on just 9 (now 10) matches out of 1021 played, and we won 3 of them.

It's important, when watching football, to ignore anything pundits say. It is highly unlikely to be based on any statistical analysis and will just be a gut reaction to what has happened.
