Agree - first ten mins we were in shock after a brilliant opening and goal by England then they just sat there. We then got back in and the rest as they say.....

Stirling fell over a few times (very naughty when trying to a get later on), Kane got marked out and Italy just got fluid.

Tbh, if Rashford have just toe punted it straight down the middle instead of fannying around and thining about his image rights in the future it could have been soooo different.

If it can be assumed that players had been practising penalties - you know, just in case - then I can't believe Rashford had been practising that.
of course they had been practising them

of course he had been practising that, much like Pirlo vs Joe Hart with his Paneka and Jorginho vs Spain.

    see MFs posts above.
The team had been practising pens every practice session.

Those who took pens were selected based on their performance in those practice sessions.

Rashford always takes pens like that, as anyone who has watched Man U this season will know.
its been all over the media for years about Eng practising pens all the time

They even employed a psychologist to help them

it didn't help from the looks of things

Ian Mitchell is the guy, formerly held the same role with the Welsh National team. Obviously us planting him there worked 😀

Lets forget about the penalties. This is the best and most successful England team we've had for over 50 years. I'm proud of the team and and the manager. I'm absolutely ashamed of the tossers who are abusing the players. The better team won on the day. We lost the final, but did amazingly well to reach the final.

We should have been more positive in the second half rather than sit back too much and let Italy dictate, but we'll try to address that next time.

WC next year and the team will be in a good shape to compete there too.

Had the easiest side of the draw so I am not sure why that counts as doing amazingly to reach the final. Italy beat Spain and Belgium which is probably more amazing than Denmark and the Ukraine.
We beat everyone who we played apart from Italy. We got to the final ffs!
We only conceded 2 goals in the whole sodding tournament.

    We did amazingly well.
I think Scotland would disagree with you.

Didn't beat Scotland. Beat a poor Ukranian side and an okay Denmark side.
Beat the Germans who were half decent..

Once we got out the group and how the draw worked out anything less then the final would have been a disappointment.

Goodness knows why anyone follows football if it makes you all such a bunch of joyless miseries. Even if we'd won you'd be claiming it didn't really count because of this or that; or we didn't win by enough; or we didn't score the right sort of goals.

Name 10 current World class English players - go on.

I don't want to state the obvious, but there's a bunch of them who drew in the final of a major tournament yesterday.
World class, not European class and 10 of them? nah.

and they lost by the way.

Name 10 world class Italian players.

I don't think anyone that follows football thinks England don't have the individuals to match Italy - if the game was always won by the sum of talent in the squad France would now be celebrating the win.
The 10+1 that won last night

OK that includes Emerson the full back that can't get a game at Chelsea because Ben Chilwell keeps him out of the team - Emerson would be third choice left back for Scotland.

but but but he's got a winner's medal and chilwell hasn't

Yeah why all the negativity about England? They ran the overall winners as close as they could possibly have got.

The argument that England don't have "world class" players is a) nonsense - look at the number of them who have won league titles and champions leagues and b) even if it is true, which I don't think it is, it shows how well they played together.

I am just happy there is an England team who play well together and are a team every other nation have to take seriously, and have a legitimate chance to win every game.

Backing up a soft world cup Semi-Final run with a run into the final (arguably soft too, lots of home advantage and softer side of the draw) is fantastic.

That is the basis of a good team for the future and England are lucky that they are all fairly young so they should have room for some improvement.

I get there are plenty of anti-England people on here, not least who are pro-Italy (matt, ugo) but they did great.

Arguably Manchini's tactical changes undid Southgate but that happens - it's tournament football, and Italy were a great team who rode their luck to get into the final.

For all the "Italy were better" - they probably were but they couldn't finish the job in 120minutes and had to rely on penalties, and they started very badly.

    rode tbeir luck?

34 unbeaten over 3 years letting in 11 goals isn't riding your luck
Try and have a modicum of humility Matt. Why are you so damn bitter towards England?
you don't express humility when quoting facts.

facts are facts are facts are facts, to be sure they are so.

And I'm sure that if England would have won there eould have been humility everywhere. Or perhaps not.

its the same at yhe last World Cup.

You played one decent team twice - Belgium - and got hammered both times.

Then a spozzy draw through to the semis and all of a sudden football was coming home again and everyone was throwing beer on each other.

except, yet again, it didn't, so you all smashed your own towns and cities up.

Didn't beat Scotland. Beat a poor Ukranian side and an okay Denmark side.
Beat the Germans who were half decent..

Once we got out the group and how the draw worked out anything less then the final would have been a disappointment.

its the same at yhe last World Cup.

You played one decent team twice - Belgium - and got hammered both times.

Then a spozzy draw through to the semis and all of a sudden football was coming home again and everyone was throwing beer on each other.

except, yet again, it didn't, so you all smashed your own towns and cities up.

No trouble round here - just lots of people out enjoying the football. Pubs were packed by noon but it all seems to have gone off peacefully.

Goodness knows why anyone follows football if it makes you all such a bunch of joyless miseries. Even if we'd won you'd be claiming it didn't really count because of this or that; or we didn't win by enough; or we didn't score the right sort of goals.

It's been the same as long as I can remember. Build them up and knock them down. The higher they get built up the more they have to be knocked down.

Lets forget about the penalties. This is the best and most successful England team we've had for over 50 years. I'm proud of the team and and the manager. I'm absolutely ashamed of the tossers who are abusing the players. The better team won on the day. We lost the final, but did amazingly well to reach the final.

Yeah but everything is fine as there is the world cup to look forward to as the Shearers / Linakers say in a self congratulatory we have already qualified way.

But I suppose if it's rigged that they get San Marino in every qualifying group they will get there.

Sure. Went to penalties twice in the semis and the final to win the thing.

You make your own luck to a degree but don’t make out Italy were far and away the better team.

They were probably the best team in the tournament and England were probably the second next team.

Spain deserved to win their semi and Italy did well to see it through to penalties.

probably the best team in the tournament?

eh? what you on about Willis?

    They won it.

Winning it means they were the best team in tournament.

They came first. Top. Above all others.

Won it. Best. Superior. Supreme. None better. Unbeaten. Add additional supetlative as you want.

You lot lost which means you didn't win it. Second. Not top. Not as good. Beaten. Crushed. Defeated.

What's fun about football, matt, is that not always the best teams win!
