Be interesting to see what Southgate does with the FBs this tournament as they will need more attacking threat to really trouble better teams.
He's obviously given Phillips a bit more freedom to get forward than he has at Leeds playing him more as an 8 than a 6 but with Kane likely to keep dropping deep unless we get Sterling/Rashford in on the break it's all a bit predictable and easy to defend against - getting an overlap from the FBs would be an obvious route to go.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
Let me clarify. I was referring to lesser quality squads. As an example, they'd rather pick 3 good left backs and play one of them at right back than someone who does it for a living in a smaller team.rick_chasey said:
Well yeah. Look at Belgium last match.pblakeney said:
My pet theory is them picking their best 11-15 players and making a formation out of those instead of the other way round.kingstongraham said:I'd expect its because in those teams, the second best right back is considered better down the left than the best left back is.
Fwiw, I think that's very rarely actually true.
Fairly rubbish till the good players came on at half time. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

More teams are playing with their wingers on the wrong side, so a right footed winger, playing on the left and cutting in. So it might make sense if you're defending against that to do the same with your full-backs.
For that to make sense however, you'd do it with both full-backs wouldn't you?0 -
I thought the Trippier selection is just a case of Southgate picking a player who has delivered for him in a tournament before even if he has to play him out of position.0
-
I think also, he's our set piece taker (as Alexander Arnold is out). But then why not play him at RBverylonglegs said:I thought the Trippier selection is just a case of Southgate picking a player who has delivered for him in a tournament before even if he has to play him out of position.

Anyone who follows club football for a few years will come across situations where the choice is whether to play an experienced player out of position or bring in some kid from the reserves. I understand this balancing act, but was surprised anyone would think of it as a good tactical move and write an article about it rather than an act of desperation which is more likely to be the case.kingstongraham said:I'd expect its because in those teams, the second best right back is considered better down the left than the best left back is.

You should probably read it before you comment.TheBigBean said:

You’ve already got the wrong end of the stick twice.
And with both Shaw and Chiswell in the squad putting Trippier there isn’t desperation clearly.0 -

Boring start as Scotland will be playing for the draw. Might liven up after England score. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Can you read Rick?rick_chasey said:No pace, were you watching the same game? What else was the second goal about?
I said in the starting line up. The second goal was scored after they'd subbed the centre forward and an attacking midfielder.0 -

Scottish patriotism and dislike of the English has boosted their performance by 50% making England look ordinary 😗Pinno, מלך אידיוט וחרא מכונאי0

Sterling's touch has been poor too. Mis-controlled about 5 passes to him so far.0

Scotland seem to have burned themselves out a bit. They will have 15 or 20 more minutes of scurrying then England will set up camp in their half and Grealish will come on, achieve nothing and it will end 0-0.0
