Febrile doesn't quite do it justice.

    Anyway, back to football....

I can assure you it's no better this side of the border either.

are you saying there is anti-Scottish/Welsh feeling?

I have never seen it myself and the aulde enemy is considered to be Germany and Argentina
Trust me Surrey, as a Welshman who has lived in England for many years it is definitely out there.

There is one chap who drinks in our pub who verhmently hates the Welsh and never tires of reminding you, ironically he has a holiday caravan in......yes North Wales!
The impression I get is that comments about the Welsh are seen as being fair game, and given mostly in jest. That's not to say they aren't offensive if you are Welsh.
A very good analysis there. But as you say after years and years of "banter" it does wear a bit thin.

Not sure if you lot are just winding MF up but this Italy team are very good and a game against France could go either way

    Grazie S/C - this completely.

No one expected us to be any good at all so all this is a bit bewildering to be truthful, but yup - anything at all could happen.

We've seen Pogba do nothing, Griezman be anonymous...... We get a decent couple of breaks, strong defence.....
Did you watch the same game? He was outstanding against Germany.

yes he was but how many times before has he done nothing?

one loaf doesn't make a baker
You are getting confused with the Pogba twins. There is the world beater who plays for Juventus and Italy and then there is his lesser gifted brother who plays for Man Utd
Are you sure you haven't got confused with the first part SC?

Nah, the one who plays for Man U is just as gifted, he just doesn't give a toss.

This is a pet hate of mine. When player don't play well or as well fans accuse them of not caring enough. Rarely the case.

Utd fans - it's probably because the other players he has around him in France give him the extra time and space to be really good.

Same logic with co-commentators when "x wants it more". At this level I really doubt it is to do with desire.

    I'll be watching :)

Re. the anti-English thing, when I was a lot younger I used to cheer on Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland against non-GB opposition, because we're friendly neighbours, right?

But that's all changed since I've actually been to Scotland and Wales. I've been shouted at to take my England shirt off in Wales (at a rugby union international), same thing in Aberdeen (football). Not to mention all the other verbal abuse just for being English and wearing a shirt that gives that away.

And let's not forget Scotch pubs giving away free beers every time the opposing side scored against England. All a bit of fun? Not really, it's racism.

Can you imagine if English pubs started doing that? E.g. free beers for every wicket taken against Pakistan/India/Windies. Or even 'anyone' scoring against the Scotch football side?

IndyRef2? Yes please, if Sco leave my tax bill will go down.

Weren't his distance run stats pretty good at Utd the other year- I know stats don't tell the whole story but at least in terms of ground covered he wasn't slacking.

It's possible international football just suits him better - teams have less time to practice a press so probably press less hence time on the ball to get his head up - he's got Kante to mop up trouble and Mbappe, Benzema and Griezmann to put through.

    Berbatov was quite popular.

Pogba isn't. Yes he is exasperating, but he was inconsistent at Juve as well. United fans are quite forgiving if they see a bit of magic every now and then.

No, the main issue with Pogba is his agent saying he wants to leave all the time. Everything follows from that.

Football agents all have a conflict of interest. You can't argue that Pogba has been well advised, leaving United when he did, then leaving Juve just as Ronaldo joined.

At least he has a couple of scudettos to show for it.

Good point though. If an English pub did that you can bet it would be raised in Holyrood and probably also by the shouty "but what about Scotland" bloke in Westminster.

I think Pogba is a decent kind of guy really, behaves reasonable well on the pitch, not know for feigning injury or spitting venom at the oppo or referees.

He didn’t like Mourinho and couldn’t be bothered to play for him, he couldn’t be bothered when manu were going through a rough patch with Solskjær. Now United have hit a bit of form again and COVID means transfer options are limited, he’ll probably sign a new contract. Great player when motivated but I wouldn’t want him anywhere near the dressing room when he’s on a downer.

No, because he delivered for his club.

I didn't say anything about being lazy, but rather being bothered / motivated. He's simply doesn't put as much effort in for Man U as he does from France or even as he did for Juve.

Yes, but Portugal v France has more interest for the neutral than (dare I say) Czech Republic v Scotland.

Oddly, in football, there tends to be less animosity to England from Welsh fans than Scots and more chance of the Welsh supporting England than you get in rugby. I remember watching an England match at my rugby club and most of the people in there were supporting England which wouldn't occur for a rugby international.

When I lived in North Wales I noted with interest that there was no shortage of St George's Crosses that would appear in Windows and on cars during major football tournaments. Not having a football shirt, I'd wear my England Rugby shirt to the pub and receive a few dodgy looks that I'd return with a quizzical but pointed look at the Three Lions on their chest.

Shows how bullsh1t the whole thing is...

True, I was just picking out the next two lowest ranked teams who are meeting in the group stage.

Today's is unbeatable though, a group that has teams ranked 16th, 23rd, 24th and 62nd in the world.

There's a razor thin gap between France and Belgium, a much bigger gap to Portugal.
