How has anyone managed to estimate the queue?

I think it's based on the assumption it will be loads more than for the Queen Mum twenty years ago.
Do you know when the peak times are going to be then?
  • They should have one of these….

Is anyone planning to go the lying-in-state?

The only lying in state event for me will be having an extra couple of hours in bed next Monday morning.

Because they cost a lot of money. Would have thought that was obvious.
It would also cost a lot of money when half the employees in the UK pulled a sickie.

Um, sure. Not sure what you are getting at.

  • It's 2022 and people are queuing up for 20 hours to look at the body of the monarch ? That is just bizarre.

Surely they could organise it so you book a slot on-line.

I guess the assumption that people will pull a sickie if they don't get the day off work.
I'm completely the opposite, I want to work even though it is a bank holiday but Southwark council are apparently not allowing any construction sites to open. I've heard that some sites in Westminster are going to be closed for two weeks!

I am getting at the fact that whether there is a bank holiday or not, next Monday would have a cost to the country's productivity.
TBH, I don't care one way or the other, as lucky me, I will out of the country.

A quick survey of my office suggests that it would be a normal day otherwise. I'd be happy for someone to use a day of their holiday if they wanted to attend. I think the economic impact would be greatly reduced if it were not a public holiday.

I would suggest that contractors may tell Westminster to get stuffed.

I don't get the herd mentality at all. But then neither do I get the monarchy model:

Not great for an economy which is suffering and already had an extra bank holiday in June

I suffer all the downsides (school closed, nursery paid for, but closed etc.) and none of the upsides as my clients are not in the UK at the moment.
Ours is open for everything except Christmas and Easter - but has emailed to say it's closing on Monday.

Is your office, or this forum for that matter, a fair representation of a cross section of the British public?
Obviously I don't know the demographic of your office, but on here, we are pretty much of a muchness and consequently share the view of it not being worth a Bank Holiday.
It doesn't mean that there isn't a significant proportion of the population that do not share our views.

I think being out of the country would be worse at the moment, people saying "oh, you're English. Terrible about the Queen" and wanting to have a conversation about something that doesn't really bother you. Obviously being called English would be even worse for a Welshman.

    how would you define "peak"??

I suspect that for a lot of these people the longer the queue the better
  • I reckon if you join the queue on Saturday mid-morning you'd probably get the longest queueing time.

So last minute rush + weekend beats being first.

It will be self-regulating, if the queue dies down they will just go back aound.

My bet would be to turn up just before the tube/trains to start running and you might save yourselves a coupleof hours

Hard to say, but if you add waiting for the first opening that may well lead to a longer wait than just queueing once it has opened.
How many will join the queue too late and end up disappointed as they didn't get there in time?

I suggest going on Tuesday, the queues will be gone by then. Alternatively you can buy a coffin, drape it in flags and leave it in your living room. It makes no difference, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the one that everyone is visiting is actually empty anyway with the body being kept somewhere a bit quieter.
  • I might pop into the office tomorrow just to gawp and the queues. (We are just off the Royal Mile, so I avoided it today).

I did wonder if it was an open casket as it was was Elvis died but I guess that's not very CofE.

Never crossed my mind that it wasn’t open, are you sure?

It's closed - that's patently clear if you read anything about the whole event.
In London at least the coffin will be draped in the Royal Standard and have a crown, and an orb on the top.
  • Definitely not an open coffin. The mawkish expecting to see a dead body will be disappointed

My wife and daughter, I need to find something else to do in London for the hours they'll be queuing up. I might go to the IWM as I've never been before (assuming it is open).
The IWM is awesome and as the queue is extimated at 20 hours you may have time to fully explore it. Churchill's war rooms is also very good.

Do you know why they want to look at a dead body as it feels very macabre to me.

I also hate queueing so even if you offered me £1k I would have to think about it
I thought the same, but it's a closed coffin as far as I know.

EDIT I wrote this two hours ago, but forgot to hit 'post'

The older I get, the better I was.

I hate the very idea of an hereditary monarchy so have not watched a second or read a single word.

Pffffft utter snowflakes. Need to go full on Irish Catholic, open casket in the deceased's front room while everyone stays the night reminiscing/getting leathered. Would have been wrapped up by now as well :D

Not if everyone wanted to show up. 😉
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.
