The fact that Bigham broke Wiggin's record - set in 2015 at a distance people thought might dissuade further attempts - suggests there could well be some tech/technique improvements the last few years. Not knocking Bigham btw, he's very good at what he does, but Wiggins was a giant of track cycling.

Wiggins was very unlucky with conditions for his attempt; with better luck he would have gone 1km further
Wiggins sacrificed distance for doing it at a time when people would be paying attention, in addition to doing it in London. He compromised getting a longer distance for getting more media attention.

It's well known the Mexico velodrome is faster and if you're going to do it in the UK you need to wait for a super low air pressure.
Oh sure I agree, but IIRC the air pressure was unusually high for the time of year when he did his hour

I don't think it was about that at the time, but the sponsors took it and rinsed it. When you see now Bingham and Dowsett doing it on free You Tube streams, and reflect on Brand Wiggins selling out the Velodrome at £50 a ticket upwards its quite remarkable. Sky and Rapha were pulling the strings at that point.

Anyway, I enjoy an hour record attempt and I'm looking forward to Dowsetts ride. I'm fairly sure he'll take it. :)

Does anyone think he is a faster cyclist now than he was on his previous record ride? Is he working on the basis that being at altitude and advancement in technology will see him through or just that he didn't go anywhere near his potential last time?
    One way to find out

I think he said at the time that he could have done more. I guess you don't really know where you limit is until you go looking for it.
Theres a video on his YouTube channel where he goes into a bit of detail about this:

    https://youtu.be/8yYbaR8JffY

He thinks he could have gone further last time. And he is obviously quite into all the tech stuff, there's another video about the bike - seems to have been some improvements:

    Just read that, nice article.

If you watch the videos he sounds confident too. But in the article he does specifically say it's 50-50 and he's not scared to fail etc.. Be interesting to see how he does.

If he is 'not scared to fail' then that is a very good position to be in.

I wonder what E Merckx thinks of some his comments.

You mean we don't have to put up with Hatch or Kirby?
Input from Wiggins would be good or Voigt.
Campenaerts even [if you can put up with the major oscillations in delivery/tone].

Is it the BBC or is Dowsett delayed?

    Hutch doing the timings?
What is the currently green timing relating too, his time versus the current hour record?

Ah no they just said the scgedule, but is his schedule to only just break the record?

What you reckon? Will he break it?

Going for a yes here. By about 100m.
  • Watching the youtube stream as bbc still not showing, hard to believe he's doing ~34mph currently.

Has anyone got a link to a slower feed - I’m thinking a lag of a good 20 or 30 seconds or so? That way he’s got a buffer zone if he’s falling short at the end…

Slightly off the pace but getting slowly quicker. I wonder if all that is in the plan...

Yeah it's negative split, and he is just under 3 seconds under the pace now (which is based on average time, not any split strategy), and his lap times have been increasing a little bit.
  • Yeah, he's not consistently reducing the 3 second deficit to the schedule...
