  • Well, it ain't over yet, as today's final stage has a familiar look to it.

In other countries MTB and CX are not seen as "lower" events.

    Broaden your Anglo-centric horizons...

I think that's a stretch, they may be more popular in other countries but in any cycling nation I would suggest World Tour road racing is king by a long way and I suspect that is reflected in the salaries of top riders. Anglo centric would put track cycling up with road racing.
Well... Pidcock and MvdP clearly disagree.

MvdP currently values XCO world and Olympic gold above Paris Roubaix for example...
I know, I said in my first post on the subject that I understand it from their point of view but as a cycling fan it's disappointing to not have all the best of a promising generation racing each of regularly on the road.

It would have been disappointing if Nadal had opted to spend a large part of his season playing squash and badminton rather than going up against Federer even if he was the best squash and badminton player and was winning world and Olympic titles.

They don't f*** about in the Baby Giro, do they?

At the moment. There was a time when Geraint Thomas valued Olympic gold first too.

And how is Stuart O'Grady remembered? As a Paris-Roubaix winner or as........ let's face it you didn't even know he has a Olympic Gold did you?
    In cycling circles perhaps.

With the UK layperson I think that an Olympic gold is far, far more meaningful than Paris Roubaix (simply because most laypeople probably haven't even heard of Paris Roubaix). Probably not far off winning the Tour.

Having an Olympic gold medal has much more mainstream impact in the UK than pretty much any other cycling achievement, like it or not. Tour, perhaps Worlds above (not that many people watch the Worlds, but saying someone is "world champion" has some weight).

Pidcock took the Baby Giro and was interviewed afterwards on the ITV Tour coverage. He said he'll probably focus on the road in 2 years which I guess ties in with targeting the Olympic MTB next year. Said he's just enjoying riding his bike which is obviously important but seems to realise he has to concentrate on the road sooner rather than later.

There's a really good profile of Pidcock on YouTube somewhere called something like 'joining the Elite'.

Caught the spoiler on GCN that he'd won the GC but didn't realise he'd won the stage as well. He totally dominated that Baby Giro.

Another awesome ride from Thomas Gloag again, finishing 7th. I know next to nothing about him but Pidcock was down to 2 teammates and this kid appears to have really stepped up.
  • Thought he came across really well on the ITV coverage.

Also pleased ITV were so keen to get him on. It shows how much the coverage has changed in the last decade or so from trying to endlessly explain the basics for people who hadn't seen it before, to covering news from the baby Giro. It really does assume a lot more of the audience now, and the interesting thing is that they've not had to change the team to do it - just give them their heads and the confidence to do it.

That's good to hear. Sadly, I generally don't get to see the ITV coverage. Hooking my local bar up with GCN this year was a major achievement and I don't want to over-complicate matters. I will try and take a look on the ITV catch-up service tomorrow.

The same guy has put up the last two stages on YouTube. Pidcock is a genuine talent. Gloag looks like someone to keep an eye on.

I have found 10 minutes of the final stage on YouTube, but not the full 40 minutes highlights package.
    That I found here:

I am watching the whole live and uninterrupted coverage as I type, with no problems.
But that's on the Eurosport player.
    Good race.

Jens Voigt's pick to take today's Tour stage on Velonews is currently going solo. :D

    The Scunthorpe problem
Well, let's test that theory out.

He (Tom Pidcock) has been selected to lead the GB team at the Worlds Road Race.

Edit: post appeared immediately so doesn't seem to be the case.
