Won by Vlasov. This kid is one to watch. 4th in the 2018 Tour de l'Avenir behind Pogacar, he won the Baby Giro that year and was considered by many to have the greater potential.

Not really in the mood to celebrate anything in Poland, but Mads Pedersen took his first win in the rainbow stripes from a bunch sprint. Don't remember ever seeing him with a lead out before, but he's got a powerful sustained finish.

Why didn't they go to the top of ventoux?

  • Saw the crash earlier. Looks like Jacobsen is badly injuried and back in a coma. Terrible. Groenewegen needs to sit out the rest of the season. Also, downhill on a narrowing finish?

Carapaz wins S3 sprint ahead of a fast closing Ulissi.

From the overhead cam, Evenepoel seemed to be going backwards at a fair rate of knots.

Yeah, but nobody else seemed interested until it was far too late. The reduced peloton (maybe 30 riders) almost came to a standstill at times.

Carapaz’s shorts & shirt shredded - what happened?

I saw it live on Polish tv, before Eurosport coverage opened up.
Once again, when the red hot favourite does what is now his standard attack, the rest sit up and allow him to go.
Then they settled into the standard counter tactic of expecting to sit on while somebody else does all the work.

At one point, Eddie Dunbar almost reeled him back in, but again, nobody else was prepared to contribute.

When I switched on to watch at around the 65kms to go mark, he was being brought back through the cars and the commentators said he'd crashed.
    So I just missed it.

Switched back off again at 40kms to go, knowing it was already over.
Usually this stage is a bit of a nail biter, going right down to the wire.
Instead it turned into a one man time trial against some sheep.

104th Gran Piemonte (1.Pro) Santo Stefano Belbo › Barolo (187k)
I will add this now, since the race will be televised live and has reasonably interesting parcour, this year, as it's the "warm" up race for the "Race of the Sunburnt Leaves".

A very demanding route in the Langhe between the provinces of Asti and Cuneo, with a final circuit of about 44 km to be covered twice through the vineyards of the Alba area. There a long series of climbs and descents with very few possibilities for rest.
The final ascent saw the arrival of the time trial of the 2014 Giro d’Italia Barbaresco-Barolo, but with a different finish line, with an added short stretch of further ascent.

    LAST KM

After the Morra descent, take a right turn that leads to the uphill road leading to the finish. Slopes always around 5-6%. At 600 meters from the finish, turn right uphill (about 8-9%) until the last bend to the left at 300m from the finish.

    Barolo (Arrival)
Barolo is located in the historic region of the Langhe. Situated on a small plateau, it is protected by the surrounding mountains, arranged like an amphitheater. The city is now famous for its many vineyards and its many varieties of red wine that are produced from the Nebbiolo grape.

I would add Amarone and Barolo are also totally different beasts.

Yes, and doesn't share a finish town with this race route.

I love a Barolo. Maybe not today though, bit hot!

Great for drying the Amarone grapes though!

There was a time when we used to drive through the area each year, heading for the Summer retreat. Often wished I'd been able to get off the autostrada around Alba to explore. Unfortunately, we were either coming from or heading to the white things in the background of this rather nice picture.

The medieval villages perched above the fields of vines, shot from the helicopter.
    Just stunning.

A nasty crash for half a dozen riders.

    15kms to go.
