Maybe he was just impatient and didn't want to wait for the covid vaccine :D

must be eyeing some early races for his then you'd suspect - if any actually take place

Tour of Algarve and Het Volk/KBK it says. And a MTB race before those.

On balance, I think that is the single season a rider has had that I have enjoyed the most since Boonen 2012.

He clearly splits opinion, but the way he came back from that awful injury (from 2017 Tour stage 1 TT crash) to get back to form in his late 30s was impressive (usual caveats about assuming he did it all legit apply).

I think with Valverde his level of doping was whatever the mode average was for winners at the given moment.

He couldn't beat club riders when he raced on Zwift.

To come back from that and get top 10s in races as different as MSR, Lombardi, the Vuelta, and Flanders shows the range of his talent (and obviously winning the world title too).

It seems churlish to say what could have been for a guy who won 4 monuments, a grand tour, and a Worlds, but he scored 8 podiums in GTs and 7 in classics, not to mention 6 in the Worlds.

I won't deny, despite his dodgy past, that I am a bit of a fan - his racecraft, all round ability and general bandit-ness, always made him worth watching.

I'd say he was the best all-round rider across 1 dayers and stage races since he came back in 2012.

He also just loves riding his bike.

I think he rode the last Olympics for Belgium....

(may be confusing him with Sven in London tho. 🤔 )

Yeah, it was Sven. DNF in London. Belgium's MTBers in Rio were Ruben Scheire and Jens Schuermans

Ah, I wanted it to be true...

(I wonder if WvA would've done any better/worse. Starting grid issues I guess...)

That's an interesting one as he never really fitted in as a rider there by all accounts. Could seem him as a good coach / mentor for young riders.

Expect to see Ineos riders hanging around at the back of the bunch all day with an occasional breakaway win.
