Went out to the pub last night as we do every Tuesday.

There were about 6 of us in the "main" part of the pub after about 9.30pm but the large adjoining restaurant was packed, properly packed for a "meeting" of antivaxxers. There must have been 80 - 100 of them.

On leaving the pub at chucking out time, there were a gaggle of these people outside nattering and I think they thought we had been in the meeting so when we came out of the pub, one small group (3 or 4) started talking to my mates and I. When we told them that we were fully vaxxed and boosted, one apparantly deranged woman began to tell us how sorry she felt for us and our kids as we were absolutely, undoubtedly going to die in line with the government's current policy of "depopulating" by vaccine.

No amount of reasoning or questioning would eleicit anything like a sensible answer.

    Q. "Why would the government want to depopulate?"
    A. "OH MY GOD . . . Arrrrrgh . . . you just don't get it!"
    Q. "Get What?"
    A. "that they're trying to kill you!"
    Q. But why would they want to kill me?"
    A. Arrgh!

And so it continued until my mate and I got bored.

They were total nutters! I was just amazed how many there were in this little village pub. Their evangelical approach was something I haven't seen since the days when people would come up to you in the street to ask if Jesus was in your life. . .

    Scary stuff

Amazing how the urge to be part of the gang just overrides every other instinct.

To be honest, with people like that around, I'm having some sympathy with "they".

Over 100k cases reported today, but 'only' 140 deaths, which is lower than last week. And I still am left wondering when the high number of cases couple with steady mortality rates (I accept the later isn't yet established) will actually be reported as good news, rather than 😱

Up till now it's the booster effect on delta. Which is great news.

I can't see it staying steady in a couple of weeks when the last week's infections feed through. It's whether it goes up to 500 or 1500 a day, probably.

London hospital admissions up to 301 (50% up in a week) as the rise in infections starts to get into those numbers.

Is that people in hospital with Covid or because of Covid?

Is that still effectively harvesting though, given that 30% ish of London's adult population isn't vaccinated.

    Hopefully not reflected nationwide.

Same stats as ever, so the former including the latter, and some of the former will become the latter.

    🤷‍♂️

But hopefully will be a lower percentage nationwide.

Dr John Campbell noted that 50% of those admissions identified with covid were presenting with other conditions, and that the covid was asymptomatic/incidental. I think in South Africa that percentage was even higher, IIRC.

Yup. I assume/hope that they are collecting data on the % of hospitalisations because of covid, and the % of those who are unvaccinated, so that they can adjust for other parts of the country.

London is being closely watched because the Omicron spike took off first here, and so it is assumd that what is happening in the capital will be replicated in other parts of the country.

But London also has a population with unusually low rates of vaccination. More than 30% of Londoners over the age of 12 have not yet had a first jab. Nationally the equivalent figure is 10%. That suggests London may turn out to be more of an outlier than a reliable indicator for how Omicron will drive up hospitalisation rates in the rest of the UK.

But who would say the non abbreviated version, and would also feel the need to abbreviate?

Anti vaxxers are using this WHO spokesperson (edit - it's the Director General) misspeaking as evidence of the vaccines harm.

Actually, TBF (to be fair), I don't use many. You've had one, IMHO (in my humble opinion) is another useful one that an emoji would struggle to convey. LOL (not 'lots of love', as my mum might have used it) has been overtaken by 🤣 or 😂.

I also like FRO ('right off' are the last two words), but it's not for polite and learned discussions as we have in CS (Cake Stop).

It's vaguely important to understand this because a virus that spreads easily in a hospital, but is very mild would misrepresent the stats when compared to previous waves.

A lot of these pre date the internet, and go back as far as the post it. Aka. Fyi. TBC.

And why abbreviate "people"? The clarity: brevity ratio is all wrong.

Yes, some of those are a waste of time, and outdated. I remember reading a book in French in the 90's on English slang, and if a French person had followed its advice, they'd have sounded like Austin Powers.
