The big Coronavirus thread

I’ve been offered a booster jab. I’ll probably have it, but not because I think it’s going to have any great effect, more because I think ‘Covid passports’ will only be issued to triple jabbed people soon, and I believe that it will be a requirement of entry to more events and places soon.0

It’s no surprise. Viral vector vaccines historically don’t work against human coronaviruses. It’s the main reason why there’s never been an effective vaccine against the ‘common cold’. ‘Common cold’ is an umbrella term for symptoms caused by a ‘soup’ of viruses ( rhinoviruses, adenoviruses ) and crucially, a coronavirus relic from the Spanish flu. It’s this component that has traditionally made it impossible to vaccinate people against the ‘common cold’ using viral vector vaccines. The new mRNA type vaccines have not previously been licensed for use in humans, and it seems that they do have some effect against human coronaviruses.kingstongraham said:

It would be interesting to know, but I don't think you can read too much into not having had a positve test. I think the majority of people in the first wave didn't give Covid to anyone, and by the time delta came a long many were vaccinated already with complete protection from covid.tailwindhome said:I'm becoming more and more convinced that the illness my wife had in March 2020 was an undiagnosed case of covid and that was it coming into our house.
Too many friends and family have tested positive in subsequent waves, people we have been close contacts of, for none of us to have tested positive just based on luck.

Still positive news in terms of how mild omicron is with regards data from South Africa.
One concerning point is raised towards the end though, because people who unfortunately die (lung complications) occur towards the end of the infectious period, the virus at that point has already had ample time to spread and moved on. This consequently means there is no evolutionary motive for Covid not to kill it's host, where is the advantage/disadvantage if the virus has already spread?
In other words strains could become milder or stronger. I hope this is proved to be wrong (click to jump to point in the video).0 -

I feel I need to start having a reverse rant now considering how you were moaning about how long your original jabs took. I had my second in June and still waiting on a letter for my booster.rick_chasey said:Booster booked for dec 23 👍🏻👍🏻

Being proactive this time round seems to get quicker appointments.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Nope, Welsh NHS doesn't allow it. They seemed to be quicker on the initial jabs but seems to be taking longer this time. Could be they are getting more people having it I suppose. Wife and daughter were both done quickly but they were in the first group.pblakeney said:

If you are fit and healthy and have no medical history, does it matter? Be patient and wait your turn knowing the people who require it before you are getting it (considered more vulnerable).Pross said:

Of my three jabs, I'd rank efficiency in the following order
1. GP group
2. Pharmacy
3. NHS vaccination site
Third place was a long way behind.0 -
So I have a friend of a friend who is fairly systematic about checking.pangolin said:

The site refused to let me book until about 16:30 or so.
Presumably if it’s like last time they’ll announce Sunday morning.
I checked the “not vulnerable/not important” boxes so I wasn’t gaming the system2 -
